For us Extremeskins veterans, we have done this exercise for several years now. Dating back to 2009 when the D.C. Sports Bog even referenced our poll in an article.

That year - Ovechkin won in a landslide. He won again in 2010 and 2011. By 2012 RGIII was at the top of the mountain.

Now, who is D.C.'s most popular athlete? Poll is attached. You can vote for a winner and a runner-up. And of course, discussion is encouraged.

VOTE TWO and NO MORE.

It's Ovi and Bryce. These two guys have the charisma to match their on-field/ice excellence

It's laughable to have Kerrigan and Morris there lol. I'd replace one with Desean

And as much as I love Wall and Beal, those attendance figures and TV ratings for that playoff run confirm that this town still doesn't fully support that team.

RG3 could easily take back number one if he could be a QB again but yeah..,

Think it's still Ovi.

Bryce may be starting to close that gap slowly. Too early to tell if he will, when he will, ect. This first part of the season though has been insanely awesome from him. Young fella, but will he win MVPs and lead the league in certain categories? Leading the Nats to a championship could make the personal accomplishments between Ovi and Bryce a lot less significant when it comes to popularity.

Bryce. Ovi is close, but Ovi doesn't have that DC Pride that Bryce has been exhibiting: i.e. During the Rangers series, he started his Post-game interview with MASN Dan with "Let's Go Caps! LET'S GO!"

Devil's advocate -- Ovechkin is at Wizards games all the time supporting.

If we're talking strictly DC, then I think RG3 is still the most popular.

If we're talking the DC area, then I'll go with Harper. Especially if we're saying today. Dude has been crushing stuff and the Nationals are finding their groove.

I think it should be John Wall, but until the Wizards become a consistently legit threat, he will never pass RG3/Ovie/Harper

Yet he reps DC, and that is relevant how exactly ?

He could be from Saturn for all I care. Hmm...

easy killer, it was a joke.

Is RG3 "popular" at the moment? His jersey is discounted at every store and reportedly ppl actually booed him when he came to the Nats game

Sure he's "notable" but popular?

Amazingly, RG3 doesn't even belong in the discussion right now.

I don't live in the area and don't follow the Caps, my votes go to John Wall and Harper.  I think there is a huge difference in being most popular versus most recognized.

RGIII has faded in popularity, imo.  Though he is most likely the most recognized as the NFL is the most popular sport in the U.S., along with there always being a story about what was given up to acquire him, and comparison to other QBs from his draft class and their continued success versus his fall from grace due to injuries, coaching, etc.

Griffin is interesting -- he's so polarizing. What percentage of fans hate him?

about 30%. He still gets mad respect in public, having seen him before the entire crowd was begging for his autograph and I was nearly smashed

Again, if you're going off most popular based on all factors (popularity of the sport, media exposure or overexposure, endorsements/commercials, play on field, etc.) then RGIII will of course still be in the discussion.  So that shouldn't really shock anyone.

All those factors contribute to more "popularity" than actual performance based popularity.  Take away all the constant media exposure (good, bad, average) of RGIII out of the picture and look at popularity based on performance.  To me there is no way he could be in the top 3 overall out of the five mentioned.

I would put him at #4 with Pierce at #5.  Pierce hits some clutch shots, buzzer beater no doubt, but comparing his Wizards career to RGIII's Skins career, RGIII's 2012 resume alone still generates more popularity (especially from the fans split on him right now), not to mention the "what ifs" due to the injuries he suffered.

I'd still say

1. Harper

2. Wall

3. Ovi

4. RGIII

5. Pierce

I don't think Morris, Beal or Kerigan even belong in the vote, though I know y'all needed some more names and those are relatively popular players.

You all are tripping if you think RG3 still doesn't have major cred in this town. Trust me, RG3 is still close to the top.

Now, if he doesn't perform well next year, then we can talk. But right now he's still up there.

But as I stated earlier, Bryce Harper is on a whole different level right now, and if the Nationals when a World Series, the ONLY person that would be able to catch him is RG3 and he would need to win a Super Bowl to do it.

I'm basing popularity, at least my votes, on performance based results.  He has not performed well the past two seasons.

He said the wrong things at times and the media had a field day with over exposing him and everything he said, including making stories out of nothing.

Yes, injuries have contributed to his success as well as not having an oline.  But he has brought a lot of bad vibes on himself.  I think Harper and Wall rank ahead of him now and Ovi.  Might be close with Ovi.  It's also hard to compare stardom/popularity across the four big sports because some are just way more popular than the others and not everyone is necessarily a fan of all four.

NFL is the biggest sport in the U.S. and Hockey is the least popular (overall), depending where you live.  I think the numbers would be skewed.  You ask person A who is only an NHL fan who the most popular athlete is in DC, most likely they will answer RGIII and Ovi, just because RGIII is spammed across the local and national media.

But you might get a fan of all four sports that ranks him below Wall and Harper.
