Florida sheriff: Burglars call 911 to get help moving stuff

Two people in Florida were arrested after one of them made a 911 call to get help with moving their belongings from a home they were burglarizing, authorities said.

Deputies responded to a home Saturday after a 911 call was made but nobody spoke, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said. At the home, the deputies concluded that nobody lived there, but they found a male suspect and his girlfriend inside the home after entering it through an unlocked door.

Deputies had been searching for the male suspect after identifying him from security video as a burglar at a Dollar General store in Poinciana, Florida, where several items were stolen earlier in the day, the sheriff's office said in a statement. Poinciana is about 35 miles (55 kilometers) south of Orlando.

While talking to deputies, the female suspect told them that she had called 911 for the purpose of having law enforcement help them move their belongings from the house they were burglarizing. They also wanted to get a ride to the airport so they could spend the weekend in New York, the sheriff's office said.

South Florida man cited after dog dyed to look like Pikachu from 'Pokémon'

A South Florida man has been cited after his dog was dyed to look Pikachu from the "Pokémon" franchise during a Miami Heat game last week.

"It's made NBA history because nobody's ever seen a Pikachu dog sitting next to an NBA player before," owner Erik Torres told NBC affiliate WTVJ.

poster-image-2023-01-03t112155.342.jpg

But the Pomeranian's fur color had already caught the attention of Miami-Dade County Animal Services during an inspection at Torres' Doral puppy store last month.

"Pikachu was in the store," Miami-Dade County Animal Services Assistant Director Kathleen Labrada said. "There was a staff member holding the dog in her lap. We obtained a photograph at that time."

Labrada told WTVJ that it is "unlawful for any person to possess, sell or otherwise transfer within the county any dyed or artificially colored rabbit or other animal."

A few days later, Torres was told Miami-Dade County Animal Services would be issuing a citation.

"No animal should be dyed, regardless of whether there's an ordinance prohibiting that or not," Labrada said. "You don't really have any guarantee or any assurance that the chemicals they're putting onto your pet are safe."

Hearing continued for Orlando woman accused of killing boyfriend in zipped suitcase

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to a Winter Park home in February 2020 after Boone reported that Torres, her boyfriend, was dead.

Deputies said she told investigators they were playing a game of hide-and-seek and they thought it would be funny if Torres got into the suitcase, according to an affidavit.

Boone told deputies she zipped Torres into the suitcase but passed out in her bed, according to court records.

Investigators said she told deputies that she woke up later and realized Torres was still in the suitcase.

When Boone found Torres unresponsive in the suitcase she told deputies she called her ex-husband who lives a few minutes away. After seeing Torres’ body the ex-husband told Boone she needed to call 911, records show.

Deputies said they found Torres’ body near the front door near a blue suitcase.

Torres had a small laceration on his lip and bruising around his eye, according to the arrest report. He also had scratches on his back, among other injuries, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office. Boone denied being in a physical altercation with Torres.

The sheriff’s office said Boone gave verbal and written consent to let deputies search her phone.

Two videos were found on her phone, and investigators said one video shows Torres yelling at Boone and telling her he can’t breathe while Boone laughs at his yelling.

“I can’t (expletive) breathe, seriously,” Torres said in the video and Boone replied, “Yeah, that’s what you do when you choke me.”

Deputies said Torres continued to tell Boone he could not breathe while calling her name.

“That’s on you. Oh, that’s what I feel like when you cheat on me,” Boone said in the video, according to court records.

According to the arrest affidavit, the video shows the suitcase facing downward with Torres pushing on the suitcase in an attempt to get out. The second video showed the suitcase in another position as if had been moved.

Deputies said Boone could be heard laughing in the video and telling Torres to “shut up” as he called her name.

Boone told Torres this was “for everything you’ve done to me,” according to the video.

When she was shown the videos by investigators, Boone said she didn’t remember taking them and it looked “bad.”

After Boone’s inconsistent statements and reviewing the videos found on her phone investigators decided to charge her with second-degree murder.

Florida man challenges everyone to fight after bars close

The line between night and morning was blurred Saturday in Cape Coral. Last call had come and gone, and the lingering crowd was beginning to disperse.

Cape Coral Police watched the clock click past three in the morning, yet the street outside the establishments was still a frenzy of activity.

“Can you go over and take care of that guy?”

A random citizen approached the patrol car, concerned about a half-naked man turning the evening celebrations into chaos. “He spit in my friend’s face and was running around grabbing people.” As another man, swiping spittle from his face, confirmed the act of aggression, police made their way to the mass of alcohol-induced to check the situation.

Among the individuals sharing goodbyes or waiting for their ride to arrive stood Kyle Shonkwiler. The Auburndale man was serving as the “self-imposed mayor” of the cluster, throwing his arms around many in more of a brace of support than political endeavor. Officers noted his attire, including pants hanging to expose his boxers and little else.

No shoes. No shirt. And there was clear evidence of over-service. The arrest report noted a “strong smell of an alcoholic beverage coming from Kyle’s person.”

Officers tried to engage the seemingly intoxicated Shonkwiler, but instead, he became enamored with a gaggle of women and stumbled away from the questioning. Cape PD soon learned that not only was Kyle from Polk County but there was no one close to remove him from the scene.

Temporality at a loss, officers placed Shonkwiler on a bench to gather himself. But, unfortunately, Shonkwiler would succumb to the rare instance of falling over from a seated position and now required medical attention.

Officers noted in their report that bystanders were beginning to stop and observe, and Shonkwiler soon turned his attention toward the onlookers.

“Watch Out! Don’t get beat up,” he shouted to the crowd gathering 50 feet away. He incoherently added, “don’t get your d**k caught on the pony,” before his strange responses turned into physical threats.

It began with the responding officers. Shonkwiler clamored for a wrestling match and even asked the police to punch him. When they rebuffed his request, Kyle again turned to the live viewing audience for a challenge. “I’ll f**k your a** up,” he confidently proclaimed.

As EMS came to check on Shonkwiler following his tumble, the threats continued to be levied. Kyle turned his body, puffed out his chest, and let it be known he wanted someone to challenge him. “You ready to go?” He asked the medic. “I’ll f**k your **** up. Let’s Go.”

Ex-NFL star Vontae Davis arrested for DUI in Florida after 'crashing his Tesla into a pick-up truck that then hit a pedestrian who was rushed to hospital - before cops found him laying down SLEEPING at the side of the highway'

Ex-NFL cornerback Vontae Davis has been arrested in Florida for driving under the influence and causing a crash that resulted in a pedestrian being rushed to hospital.

A spokesperson for the Florida Highway Patrol told TMZ that first responders arrived at the scene of a car crash involving two vehicles on State Road 821 on Saturday, February 4, at around 7.51 a.m.

One of the first things they noticed was significant damage to the front and back of Davis' black Tesla while a bronze pickup truck - a Toyota - suffered damage to its rear end.

Later, in its report of the incident, police said that Davis, 34, had lost control of his vehicle and caused the crash. Authorities also reported that there was enough force from the collision for the pickup truck to hit a pedestrian nearby.

The pedestrian was then immediately rushed to hospital with multiple injuries. The person's identity has not yet been revealed by local law enforcement.

Florida Highway Patrol also said that they then found Davis laying down on the side of the road, sleeping. The former Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis Colts and Buffalo Bills player played 10 seasons in the NFL from 2009 to 2019.

‘A nightmare’: Janitor, 72, trapped in Orange County courthouse for 3 days prepared to sue

The 72-year-old woman who was locked inside the Orange County Courthouse for three days last weekend is now planning legal action.

On the evening of Friday, January 27, Libia Vargas De Dinas was cleaning the courthouse when she walked into a holding cell there and couldn’t get out.

“This was a nightmare for her, and she doesn’t want anybody else to go through something similar,” Vargas De Dinas’ Attorney Bill McAfee said. “It keeps replaying over and over again in her mind.”

Vargas De Dinas, also a diabetic, was stuck inside without her phone, with no food, and just a small amount of water to drink from the top of a toilet.

She remained there until an officer found her the following Monday morning.

“There was no way for her to unlock it when she was inside,” McAfee said. “She’s pretty traumatized.”

McaFee is representing Vargas De Dinas in a lawsuit he says they plan to file against Allied Universal. They’re the security company tasked with patrolling the courthouse.

A report obtained by Channel 9 news shows the company had officers on duty every day Vargas De Dinas was locked in the cell. McAfee says they’re particularly going after the security company and not Orange County or the cleaning company that employs Vargas De Dinas.

“They have a system, this private security company does,” McAfee explained. “When she entered at 5 p.m. Friday, in order to get keys, she gives them her driver’s license and she signs a log.”

According to McAfee all of the cleaning crew is supposed to return at 10 p.m. to give the keys back and retrieve their driver’s licenses before signing out.

“Her driver’s license is still sitting there, her log is unsigned,” McAfee explained. “They’ve a system in place. How did they blow through so many stop signs? If they are supposed to go through each floor of the courthouse, there should be a log on each floor that shows they walked this floor at this time.”

Cape Coral man cracks a beer open during traffic stop

Sometimes the situation just calls for a cold one.

Just before midnight on February 8th, Lee County Sheriff’s deputies drove North on Chiquita Boulevard. As they approached Gleason Parkway, something caught their eye. A black Mercedes-Benz parked in the opposite lane.

The vehicle was just sitting there. Lights on. With no traffic causing the stoppage. Deputies crept behind the car, flicked on their flashing lights, and tried to determine if the vehicle might have been abandoned.

As they approached the vehicle, they found 40-year-old Michael Sereda sitting alone in the passenger seat.

Beer cans littered the vehicle’s floor and lined the front cup holders. 24-packs of Michelob Ultra and Bud Light were torn into and drained as casualties were visibly scattered at Sereda’s feet.

Deputies attempted to begin a line of dialogue, but according to the Arrest Report, Sereda was “unable to speak” due to his level of intoxication. Now in need of support, Cape Coral Police’s assistance was requested, and the deputy waited for backup.

Then came the unmistakable sound. kr-Pop-tss-SSS.

In plain view of deputies, Sereda reached into the pile of fallen aluminum soldiers and pulled out a hidden treasure. An unopened beer.
