The Official ES All Things Redskins Name Change Thread (Reboot Edition---Read New OP)

I love this team, but I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that if the name is changed I will boycott the team, and the NFL for as long as I remain alive.

We are the Redskins, are history is the Redskins, my love is for the REDSKINS not the Washington Football Club, or what ever other name someone comes up with.

I'm not judging you as a fan or anything, but can you explain to me why you feel this way? It's more curiosity than anything else. I love the franchise as a whole, including the history, tradition, players, colors, the city it represents, etc. I don't think any one facet of that changing or leaving could change my love of the team.

The only way I think I'd divorce myself from this team would be if they moved, changed names/logos, and vacated the team history (similar to what the Ravens did when they left Cleveland). If they were the Hollywood Stars and the first rushing attempt of their first season in LA set their franchise record, then I think I'd have to stop caring.

Barring that unlikely series of events, I'm not sure I would give up on the franchise that I've watched for 30+ years. The Washington Warriors or Washington Braves or Washington Renegades or whatever wouldn't be enough for me to turn my back on the burgundy and gold and the years of loyalty and enjoyable fall Sundays that I've had.

I hate to say it but the day they change the name is likely my last as an NFL fan.

I have no interest in watching a team called the Washington Bash, or Warriors or Senators or Braves... thats all bush league crap.

I have been a fan for 40+ years and the team will always be the Redskins, no matter what writers are demanding. When the Redskins go, so will I.

I understand the sentiment.  Very difficult to let this one go with so much pride and history behind it.  Would sting knowing that this whole name change issue is nothing more than a manufactured left wing attention grab.  But this is the society we now live in.

Truth be told, the only legitimacy I see to the name change argument is the word "Redskin" refers to a color of one's skin.  Whether it be painted or skin pigment, whether it is truly offensive to the subject group, whether the name honors or disparages, the origin of the word, does not seem to be relevant to this side of the argument.  Anything referring to skin color is taboo, therefore it must be eliminated....  So what does the silent majority do?  The answer appears to be appeasement. I can see it developing on this board as we speak.

I can't say I'd never watch another game, but it would damn sure screw up my life!

This is just so unfathomable.  Think about it...I don't know if it's ever happened, a team being forced to change their name?

I love this team, the name, the logo, the whole shebang, and I don't know if I'd recover emotionally to a change.  For the sake of my sanity, don't do it, Dan.  If you care about how just one person feels, like the other side is preachin'... lol,

I understand the sentiment.

I'm floored that the nickname of the team means so much to so many. I 100% do NOT understand that sentiment. I understand hoping the name stays the same. I understand being pissed off if it changes. But I don't understand how anyone can be SO passionate about a franchise just to stop following it the day after the name and mascot changes.

Are you guys really more invested in the name Redskins than following the exact same team with the exact same history that is called the Warriors, Braves, or something else? If so, can you explain why? I don't really care to fight with you about it as much as I just need to understand it.

Did this many people leave DC basketball when the Bullets became the Wizards?

Posts on a message board dictate fandom? My dad has been a Redskins fan for decades, traveled all over the country to see them and has NEVER posted on this board

Sometimes you have to stand for what you believe in and I think this entire debate is dumb, therefore if they take it t the extreme of changing the name then I will just simply stop watching, stop spending my money (which may be little in comparison), and move on.

Ill never forget the feeling I had as a kid watching the Gibbs era, or even last seasons epic run, but those memories are REDSKINS memories no longer being the Redskins means those are gone, I am a Redskins fan without the Redskins I am no longer a fan.

First off, if they changed the name back to the Braves, I would bet that the whiners would still be whining. They need to whine to fill their empty lives and try and find some importance to their existence.

I think people are so steadfast about this, because most of us are tired of the PC bull****, and are drawing a line in the preverbial sand.

This is getting completely ridiculous. Bottom line is this...the Redskins name was used by an Indian tribe a LONG time ago and was seen as a prideful thing. There are several High School teams named Redskins, most if not all have Native American populations over 70%. Where is the outrage there? There isn't any. This is all stemming from whites/blacks who are offended FOR the Native Americans, because a couple Native Americans decided they personally were offended. That's like a drop of water in the ocean. This is ignorance on their part. The people who are championing this cause have NO dog in the fight.

Now you throw in this parasite of a tribe who only truly cares about the bottom line of their casino thrown into the mix.

All that being said, I am not one of those that would stop cheering for them due to a name change...I would hate it, and would never buy anything that said anything but Redskins on it, but I would still bleed burgundy and gold. Luckily we have an owner who refuses to bend to the overly obnoxious and ignorant minority.

this website has over 100 different designs and i'm afraid this thing is gaining alot of steam.   This name isn't going to change anytime soon and Danny Boy will take it to court and fight it non-stop.  He is either going to get the help of the other sports leagues otherwise they are all going down together.  Danny Boy isn't letting just the skins name just get changed

Was the name considered racist in the 30's when the team was named ?

I am not a  NA but I cannot see this name as racist, I am not insulted being called paleface, whiteskin or whitey. I think it gets a racist name because of what people said before the word. I see in old movies the cowboys calling them dirty redskins or murdering redskins. In my whole life I never viewws the word as racist

But we are fighting a losing battle, it will mean more marketing money for Snyder as everyone will need to get new gear. I am sure many will be like me and never buy any that has a new name

This is one of those things that you just understand or you don't.  Difficult to explain.  I'm not personally on the "i'll stop being a fan" ship, but I can understand how some might be.  This is extremely important.  Football may be just a sport to some, and Redskins might just be a name, but when you associate certain memories/experiences with not only the franchise, but the name as well, it is an incredibly tough pill to swallow.  Especially in light of the current debate.

Its only a losing battle because the "white man" and the "black man" are telling the "red man" what to be offended by...

Its hard to put into words that others will understand, I guess... I grew up in Washington DC in the 70's and 80's... until then Indians were just fodder for John Wayne to shoot in Cowboy movies for me. But the team changed that - the Redskins were always the underdog - the Cowboys were America's team and had the cheerleaders and were on MNF every week... but the Redskins were just tough guys and played hard - they had a big tough Running back and a QB who wore #7...

It was like belonging to a special club being a Skins fan -  they had tough times but it all paid off in the 80's. I loved the logo, the colors, the team, coach etc... When they won the Superbowls - everyone in DC was smiling... it brought people together and I remember standing in the cold rain in January of 1988 with thousands of others and no one minded the wind and cold...we were all there to see the champions...

Its been a part of my life for 40 years and now my wife and kids are Redskins fans. I even turned my basement into a tribute to my favorite team and players. I watch every game there...

I dont get the offensive nature of the name, personally. It stands for something strong and honorable to me. If people are offended by it, I would say, dont support the team. I also would consider it a defeat for freedom in America, since we have so little actual freedoms left in allot of ways.

I just dont want to watch a team not named Redskins.

The Oneida tribe is a group of money grabbing opportunists. They run Turning Stone casino in ny. They have repeatedly tried to sue the farms around the area of the casino for their land to expand their casino. This tribe has zero credibility in this issue. The only reason they are taking it up us because they are looking to keep their names in the media. The more I read about them, the less respect I have for them. They remind me of the Westboro freaks. Both just need to go away.

That's not exactly true. The Oniedas of NY had land stolen from them by the government that was in a signed treaty theirs.

That land around their casino...technically is their land.

Do some research.

Start your own movement IMMEDIATELY.

I say everyone who attends the game at home (vs Chicago) goes with a painted red face as a warrior into battle.

OWN IT RESPECTFULLY.  Take away the negative crap by embracing the literal translation of the name.  And do it OFTEN.

Can you just imagine a sea of fans at FedEx with red faces?  It would be powerful. And UNIFYING.

That's how I see this debating shifting.  So long as it is done respectfully.

It's more lawyers, political activists and journalist trying to line their pocket and get their name out there. They wouldn't give the fumes out of their SUV to actually help N.A and while they're spending money on campaigns for this nonsense the real problems Native Americans face are receiving no aid or attention. Horrible, evil human beings.

I wonder if they can afford to campaign because they don't live in poverty, have not fallen victim to meth addiction and were able to afford college. They should be the first in line to help solve the real problems their people face but they don't give a rat's behind about anything but their pockets.

USS - I understand your sentiment and was at all 3 parades. Standing on one of the busses that '88 parade.

You could simply pick a team if they change the team. It's not like they are moving to NoVa or whatever, they will no longer be the Redskins.

That's BS. I can't stand it, and find it obnoxious that these few people are stirring this pot without any real knowledge about the meaning of the word.

To not call them the Redskins would not be my favorite team. The only name I would support would be the "Washington Bullets" (For the irony...kidding) ... otherwise, the Redskins are essentially dead as a football team.

The way we shove it back in their face is starting a donation collection on behalf of E.S for the native american college fund. That way they're exposed for being self serving hypocrites who care about publicity, and not the people they are claiming to be looking out for.
