DallasNews: Where did Cowboys fans go? Team has biggest hometown viewership drop in NFL

The Cowboys are league leaders. Their television ratings in Dallas-Fort Worth are down 18 percent from a year ago. No other NFL team has seen such a drop in its hometown audience.

The average weekly rating is down from a 35.3 to 29.1. That’s approximately 907,700 homes to 753,100 homes.

Still, Cowboys games easily have been the highest rated shows in each of the five weeks they have played.

But they now find themselves in the company of the Oakland Raiders, who are down 15 percent, and Tennessee Titans, down 14 percent.

By contrast, Peyton Manning’s Denver Broncos are up 37 percent, the surprising Seattle Seahawks are up 33 percent and the surging New York Giants are up 19 percent.

Last season was no freak. In the three seasons prior to 2011’s average of 35.3, the Cowboys ratings through five games were: 35.0 in 2010, 32.6 in 2009 and 35.2 in 2008.

So where have 154,600 D-FW homes gone since last season?

They are such fair-weather fans.

Hopefully hurting Jerry's pocket with a decrease in ratings will speed up the process of him getting irritated with being the GM and ultimately throw in the towel. Probably not going to happen, though.

More like frustrated fans than actually fairweather, considering the awful mistakes that Garrett has put us through with his clock management and the obvious circus that Jerry likes to run.

Is it a shock? A .500 team over the past 17 years. It's about damn time people stop watching this train wreck.

Agreed. Jerry has basically ruined the Cowboys singe-handedly. He did a good job with the Parcells hiring, but his ego eventually ran him out of town. Now we're back to being an 8-8 club for the most part.

You want know the best part? Jerry is 70 and we are only now entering his prime "Al Davis" crazy years. He is never going to hire a GM. Never. Over the next 20+ years we get to watch him slowly go senile while running a billion dollar company into the ground. You thought his talent evaluation was terrible the past 5 years? Wait 3-4 more years. Should be awesome.

The problem isn't talent. For some reason (It may be the water), this team just doesn't know how to be a TEAM. We are individually talented .. but as a team we suck. We have solid contributors from all positions ... yet, we just don't know to win.

LOL. Unfortunately, I agree with you as well.

They are either 49ers fans now or have all went out and bought RGIII jerseys. 80 percent of cowgirl fan base are bandwagon.

Hmm... if that was the case then Dallas wouldn't be the top team in sales year after year or franchise value. I doubt anyone could be a "fairweather fan" with the way this team has been overall in the past 15 years.

Reality must've finally sunk in that it isn't 1995 anymore, their team is run like a three ring circus, and that no one besides the media actually gives a **** about the Dallas Cowboys.

This is untrue. Most of the ATL threads are about the Cowboys ;)
