Jumbo
djd, I've beat the Dire Straits drum and the Knopfler drum for years on ES (as you've likely noticed) and couldn't agree more--two disparate performers such as Eric Clapton and Chet Atkins have called him one of their favorite all-time guitarists and performers (he's done a lot of work with both and a great disc with Atkins--he's touring with the corpse of Bob Dylan currently). Good call on the Spinners Mr. S. Rubberband Man is one of my favorites. Norman G. was just a freakazoid. Way too much acid I think. :pfft: ---------- Post added August-1st-2012 at 06:53 PM ---------- 365. Dirty Boulevard---Lou Reed Some NSFW lyrics. There's room for another Reed tune. Wish you could hear the lyrics in the live video.

Going Commando
#37 Sitting on the Dock of the Bay- Otis Redding Glad someone put some Otis Redding in. I've always thought it strange this is the song people associate with him even though it came out of the blue after he died and he never performed it live. The "outros" alone on Dire Straits are just incredible. Romeo & Juliet, Tunnel of Love (especially) , On Every Corner and heck, even a lesser song like Private Investigations all offer incredible endings. Been a fan from the first listen in prolly 1978 or so. Damn I'm old! Just did an iPod run thru for the past hour and the tunes from these guys just age incredibly well to me. Going Commando
48. England - The National I loved High Violet. Good choice for a newer song. These aren't a suggestion for the list. These are just my two favorite songs High Violet. (Lemonworld & Bloodbuzz Ohio). EDIT: sorry, posting videos for non suggestions bogs down the thread and gets confusing. Going Commando
I had a hard time choosing between my two favorite Hendrix songs. Instead of Castles Made of Sand I decided to go with...75) Hey Joe-Jimi Hendrix Those two plus Wind Cries Mary are my favorite Hendrix songs too. There's also an instrumental version of Bold As Love that's one of my favorite recordings ever. I don't know where the take comes from, I just got it off a compilation CD from my friend back when I was in high school and have treasured it ever since. It's stunning. Cream - Sunshine of Your Love (1967)Legendary guitar riff. Clapton's best work was always with supergroups. Love that song. Ginger Baker's drumming is actually what makes the song for me. It's awesome. ---------- Post added August-2nd-2012 at 12:44 AM ---------- Easy-E "gimme that nutt" LOL! Ridiculous. I like My Baby'z Mama. ---------- Post added August-2nd-2012 at 12:47 AM ---------- We have a distinct shortage of the blues in this list so far. I thought so too. No Delta Bluesmen. Problem is the recording qualities blow and don't do the songs or artists justice. You have to condition your ear to actually enjoy it. ---------- Post added August-2nd-2012 at 01:18 AM ---------- 297. Float On - Modest Mouse Not a fan of that song or most of that album. It's their nadir. I like Modest Mouse and Ugly Cassanova though. Got me through the tenth grade. If you want just one song to represent them, I'd go with 3rd Planet or Dramamine. deejaydana
374) In The Sun--Michael Stipe and Chris Martin (Joseph Arthur song). Here's a simply beautiful song from Joseph Arthur (an under-rated song writer imho and one worth checking out if you're not familiar with his material). he has of course his own version of this song BUT this cover of it, by a couple artists you'll recognize, is notably stunning. The lyrics take me back to XTC's Dear God but w/o the obvious hopelessness or darkness. Really thoughtful lyrics and two voices which blend together well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ix77YY2ggjg I don't know anymore What it's for I'm not even sure If there is anyone who is in the sun Will you help me to understand 'Cause i been caught in between all I wish for and all I need Maybe you're not even sure what it's for Any more than me
Going Commando
Anyone else find something unsatisfying about this exercise? I've got a million songs that were deeply meaningful to me at one point in my life that would mean nothing to most people. Plus one thing comes to mind and by the time it's your turn again the moment is lost and you think of something else. Though in a way I suppose that could be good. Just like any list, it's going to be imperfect. I'm trying to make an effort to step away from the top pop, rock, rap, whatever hits that everyone's already heard a thousand times. I think at its best threads like this should take you somewhere you haven't been or help you uncover something you might have missed. I too suffer from the "dammit I already forgot what I was going to add" syndrome.

Plus one thing comes to mind and by the time it's your turn again the moment is lost and you think of something else. Though in a way I suppose that could be good. Same here. There are a ton of songs that I listen to that plenty of people on this site wouldn't like, and there are a ton that I listen to that are very popular. That's just the way it is. There are a ton of songs that I've wanted to post, but seeing which genres have been represented already, I've decided to go in a different direction just to balance the thread out a little. For the most part, I've gone the fairly popular route, though I'll occasionally throw in a personal favorite, like this one. Though it is a tough crowd on this site when it comes to Coldplay, this is actually one of their best songs, great storytelling, and overall a great dark vibe, which is in stark contrast from to most of their songs ... 376.)
