Deion Sanders: Dez Bryant needs help

Deion Sanders, who stopped mentoring Dez Bryant months ago, strongly criticized the Dallas Cowboys receiver in reaction to the criminal trespass warning given to Bryant over the weekend at a Dallas mall.

"I'm upset but not surprised whatsoever," Sanders said on ESPN 103.3's Ben & Skin Show. Sanders described Bryant's behavior at NorthPark Center on Saturday as "ignorant." The 2010 first-round pick was issued the warning after an off-duty police officer requested that Bryant and his friends pull up their pants because their underwear was showing and Bryant responded with repeated profanity, according to the police report.

Bryant, who was stung by Sanders' comments, is adamant that the only thing he did wrong at the mall is use profanity toward a police officer, whom Bryant claims shoved him into the back as he was escorting him outside.

"He needs help. He needs help," Sanders said, citing issues stemming from Bryant's difficult childhood. "I told the Cowboys from Day One that he needs help. Matter of fact, they have a team in place to help him. But you cannot tell a grown man what to do."

Sanders, who was recently selected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and serves as a mentor to many NFL players, said he ended his relationship with Bryant over the summer due to the receiver's dishonesty.

"I wish Deion would come to me as a man and talk to me," Bryant told ESPNDallas.com. "I've been reaching out to Deion. I've never done anything wrong to Deion or disrespected him. I've never lied to Deion."

The NCAA suspended Bryant in September 2009 for the rest of that season for lying about having lunch with Sanders. No other rules violations were found, but Sanders said it bothered him that he took a lot of the blame for Bryant's lie.

However, Sanders said the relationship continued until he became concerned that Bryant could negatively influence children in Sanders' youth program. Sanders added that he felt like he could not help Bryant.

"I don't have a problem with you lying to me. That's one thing," Sanders said. "But when you lie to yourself as a man, you have a serious problem and that's where this kid is. And I can't condone it. I really can't. It tarnishes everything else I'm trying to develop in these kids [in his youth program]. I can't allow you to poison other kids that I'm trying to mentor and take to another level."

I just don't buy it, I think Deion now has some personal agenda based on the business deal. By the way who the hell is Deion to tell anyone how to live their life? If they ask for his help, sure give them help. But for him to have such a hypocritical view when he was doing blow, women, and going crazy seems very stupid.

It would be one thing if this was the only evidence that Bryant was having issues but it's not. Way too many red flags going up for Cowboy fans not to be at least a little worried.

I have to agree. There just seems to be too much going on with him right now. A lockout is the last think this kid needs. Hopefully it will be averted and he can be suckling at the warm, protective teat of his handlers, and not hanging out with his entourage....

So I guess prisoners and ex-cons aren't allowed to tell kids to not commit crimes...

Here's the best part:

"I feel like the cop was in the wrong here more than anything," Bryant told ESPNDallas.com on Friday. "Don't just make it seem like I went off and had a hot head for no reason. That's the only thing I did wrong -- I used profanity."

I agree. I'm not saying that Deion is the best person for the job but somebody needs to get through to this kid before he ends up PacManning his career away. There are plenty of instances of kids from rough upbringings starting out rocky but getting their act together so it's not without hope but it really sounds like he doesn't get it yet. It doesn't sound like he understands what's at stake here.

Just too funny! :rotflmao:

I'll have a hot dog with my irony....

Puke fans should have caught clue when Jerruh called him out in the press at the end of the season last year.

You puke fans need to pay attention when Jerruh complains.

good point.

sowers, i would agree with you about deion being hypocritical if he were still acting like a typical spoiled rich sports star. from what i understand, he gave that up long ago. if thats the case, who better teach others not to repeat the mistakes they made? he's the first person a kid heading in that direction would listen to. good for him.

Dez needs to grow up a little certainly, but the other side of it is his actions have been overblown a bit by the media. For instance he wasn't actually banned from the mall at all.

Also think about who Deion has been praising (Pacman Jones and TO) and who he's been badmouthing (Troy Aikman, Jason Witten, Tony Romo sits to pee, and Jason Garrett) before this

I don't like either of them, though if I had to choose I'd have to say I like Deion less.

I don't mind Deion. I think he really has two persona's. the one we see, and the other one that does try to be a good person.

He's never said he's ever been anything but a shameless self promoter, so I can't ever blame him for coming off that way,, it's his shtick, and on the field no doubt he backed it up.

But Deion never ever to my knowledge ever pretended to be anything but a merc trying to put himself in the best position to win a title and be on the big stage.

But at the same time there's an awful lot of him that comes to light that he doesn't publicize as much, and he really does seem to be a genuinely decent person. His mentoring has been a positive thing, and I believe him when he says these things about Bryant.

Coupled with reports that we read about him prior to draft about his background, and other things I've read about Garrett not being taken with him, and getting tossed from a mall like a common teenager..

I think I believe Deion.

Yeah, I bet Dez Bryant goes through life saying that. "Not my fault I got an F. I feel like the teacher was in the wrong more than anything". "Not my fault I got a penalty. I feel like the official was in the wrong more than anything".

And the second part is comedy gold too:

"Don't just make it seem like I went off and had a hot head for no reason. That's the only thing I did wrong -- I used profanity."Yeah, admitting to cussing at a mall cop, really sounds like you didn't "go off" or are a hot head. Knuckle-head. Dumb statements like that make me think Bryant did act like a spoiled rotten 14-year old in that mall, even moreso than he was accused of.

What a shame, kid has talent, but he'll end up as just another self entitled failure, because he has relied on his physical talent and not a strong work ethic. At least he will knock himself out of the league.

And I have no ill will towards Deon. He is a guy who took care of himself and viewed the NFL the way it wants to be viewed, like a business. Now, he does a lot of positive things to help kids, who really need it.

He actually was banned from the mall, it was just up to mall security as to whether or not to call the police if he showed up.

Doesn't a good mentor stick with the troubled individuals that he's trying to help? Especially when they slip up? Isn't that why they got into the mentoring business? Shouldn't seeing the kids you guide make mistakes from time to time almost be expected? They wouldn't need guidance if they made all the right decisions all the time.

*Edit* Oh yeah, if ME-ion's telling you how to behave, you've got serious problems.

Looking at Around the NFL, I see three guys already getting in trouble. I think for some being locked out is going to be really bad. Their insanely rich and lack the discipline and self control to know what to do with free time. If the NFL takes a year off some of these guys might totally self-destruct.
