Lame rule change ... Brandon Banks value takes a hit

They were trying to get Banks into the games late last season as WR, and that's when he was slowed down by injury. The same ability that makes him a threat as a KR also should make him pretty effective on the screen as well. Banks could make the team for KR/PR duty and to provide depth for the slot WR position. I don't think his hands have ever been questioned. Not saying it's a fact that this is the way it will go, just pointing out that he does have value at the WR position that some of his competition for the 5th/6th WR spot may not have. On the flip side those other WRs are bigger and do provide more value on the kicking side of ST play.

*edit: typo

That makes no sense. Why would they do that? Bring in a weak-legged kicker because of the rule change? Come on man! The rule change affects every return man and kicker in the NFL. No more Devon Hester or Josh Cribbs taking a kick off to the house anymore. These specialist can't do anything else for their team except return kicks. Too bad though. It does take some excitement out of the game. There goes 3 to 5 wins from some teams like the Bears.

You - and others - are REALLY overstating the effect of this rule. Sure there will be more touchbacks, but people are acting as if the kickoff return is now dead, which is absurd.

I wouldn't leave the room to get a beer when they show the kickoff return highlight reel after this season if I were you. :2cents:

We're not even halfway through week 1 of the preseason and already there's been a kick return for a touchdown (San Diego's Bryan Walters against the Seahawks.) So let's not throw dirt on the grave of KORs just yet.

I'm not saying it will be negligible. I think the TB% will increase drastically to between 40% and 50%. I'm just pointing out that assuming 80% of the kicks will got for touchback is a little far fetched.

EDIT: Also note that in the playoffs last year the average kickoff distance was 62.7 yards. Further evidence that the kickoff distance will drop as it gets cooler.

Kickers have started doing directional kicks to pin them to a sideline. With an extra 5 easy yards, who knows if that strategy is employed a lot this year. They could decide to just do touchbacks and avoid the risk.

Correct. This rule change is overstated. Kickers with booming legs will have more touchbacks, but 5 yards isn't going to render kickoff returns and specialists useless. Directional kickoffs are a tremendous risk, as you'd be giving the opponent the ball at the 40 yard line by placing it straight out of bounds or on a bounce. Even punters can't punt consistently with distance, hang time, and accuracy... and that is their sole job.

I agree with you. Jaxonville had an 80 yard KO return last night too, and there were a handful of 30-40 yard KO returns yesterday to boot.

There are two sides to this though, Philly did not have a single KO return last night.

^ this!

sure, there were alot of touchbacks last night..more than usual, but some kickoffs got returned, one VERY far, and one for a TD...

so of course it will effect the kick return game, but some of you are being way over dramatic.

So does everybody still want to cut Brandon Banks? That new rule doesn't seem to faze him... I don't know how that pip squeak does it, but he makes big return after big return.

I honestly think people lose sight of him in the shuffle. He is so small that I bet he is hard to track down in the middle of a crowd of bodies that are much larger than him.

You got that right! I don't know how he does it either, but we definitely need to keep the little guy around! What was that return he had tonight? I was watching online and couldn't see the stats on the screen.

this has to be one of the worst rule changes of all time. all kick off returns are exciting but the very first one to start off the game is just amazing. it kicks off the entire game and players/fans get a high off it. but now the commish has taken that away. not a fan of this guy. football just looks weird without it. it doesnt feel right.

As i said earlier in this thread..he is the most explosive and fun player to watch IMO...and after tonight he's not going anywhere

Agree with this 100%. Unless this guy is an absolute cancer in the locker room and more importantly a distraction, Banks is here to stay me thinks. Russell and others are reporting that there's some real question if Banks will make the roster based on the off the field issues. We're all aware.

If I'm the coach, I'm okay with risking keeping a specialist on the team who's explosive and a game changer even if it means you have to educate this guy on how to be a professional on and off the field. He's young, needs a role model (Charles Barkley), but he's a must keep at this point until this team can find a younger multi-purpose Return Man/Wideout. I'm not seeing another guy on this roster who's even close to what Banks has to offer at KR/PR, but we'll see if Paul gets some touches next week in the return game. Lord knows Aldrick Robinson didn't show anything worth a :pooh: tonight.

Its not Goodell's decision alone, or in majority. But of course, being the face of the NFL's official side, he gets all the blame.
