Qadafi may have fled to Venezuela (unconfirmed but credible British sources)

Jesus, Misrata sounds bad. The plan to take out Gaddafi's supply lines seems to be the best idea. That can still be done from the air, while taking out the tanks and artillery themselves might be impossible at this point if they're too close to civilian areas.

3:55pm More on those Gaddafi tanks entering Misurata. A resident named Sami phoned Reuters, telling them:

Two people were killed so far today by snipers. They are still on the rooftops. They are backed with four tanks, which have been patrolling the town. It's getting very difficult for people to come out.

There are also boats encircling the port and preventing aid from reaching the town.

A spokesman for the anti-Gaddafi fighters said:

There is fighting between the rebels and Gaddafi's forces. Their tanks are in the centre of Misrata ... There are so many casualties we cannot count them.
4:00pm Civilians have been hit in the bombardment of sites in Libya, says Russia - which called for an immediate end to the strikes. A foreign ministry spokesman said:

In that respect we call on countries involved to stop the non-selective use of force.

We believe a mandate given by the UN Security Council resolution-- a controversial move in itself - should not be used to achieve goals outside its provisions, which only see measures necessary to protect the civilian population.

He said that 48 civilians had been killed in the overnight shelling, with strikes hitting a medical facility, roads and bridges.

Libyan state TV had also given the same casualty count earlier in the day.

So far there hasn't been any evidence that civilians were killed by the air strikes, although probably some have been. So far though State TV has only shown wounded soldiers.

They said that most of the casualties were elderly, women, and children though, lol.

http://af.reuters.com/article/libyaNews/idAFLDE72J0ES20110320

ROME, March 20 (Reuters) - Italian aircraft are ready to join operations against Libya from Sunday, Defence Minister Ignazio La Russa said.

Speaking on state broadcaster RAI, La Russa said eight Italian jets had been assigned to the coalition command and would be ready to take part in operations immediately.

"We want to participate as equals in the operation," he said. He also said Italy was ready to take action over an Italian tugboat detained in Libya.

Yesterday, I have 25, today, since morning I have three and they are coming. They are amputations... severe injuries, crushing - I don't know what they are using but please, come and protect the civilians - babies, women, all the civilians that is coming here, they have no...water, no food.

UPDATE

Oh, I should mention that there is a lot of talk on twitter coming from sources in Benghazi who seem convinced that Gaddafi is issuing orders and codes to sleeper cells around Libya through State TV.

Can't verify if that is really happening, but it would be another reason to take out State TV.

I'm seeing a lot of reports that bodies being shown on Libyan State TV are intact and have bullet holes.

He tells the BBC: "I saw things I'd never seen before, lots of young people who will be disabled for the rest of their lives. If I told my British colleagues about it, they wouldn't believe the injuries I saw."

On Al Jazeera English television they said international journalists in Tripoli have been repeatedly blocked from seeing the missle damage sites or the hospital where the wounded are.

Some have been forced to go see a funeral that seemed to be a "macabe celebration of death".

I keep remembering a long-ago fake news story from National Lampoon.

Ugandan dictator Idi Amin announced today that 3,400 Ugandan dissidents had died in a three month long bus crash.

When asked about anonymous eyewitness reports that the bodies had been riddled with bullets, Amin pointed out that it was dangerous to be cleaning loaded firearms in a moving vehicle.

International human rights group, Amnesty International, has announced that they will investigate. Amin is quoted as saying "The **** they will."

8:25pm Heavy anti-aircraft gunfire has just been reported in central Tripoli.

Sustained bursts were accompanied by tracer rounds and machine-gun fire, says Reuters' correspondent.

8:56pm The Libyan military spokesman has just announced a new ceasefire - as of 9pm tonight.

Notice he calls for a ceasefire at night time....lol.

9:07pm Al Jazeera's Anita McNaught, reporting from Tripoli, tells us that the city is now quiet following that salvo of anti-aircraft and machine-gun fire. She has not heard any aircraft or large explosions, and believes the shooting was set off by nervous troops in expectation of renewed airstrikes.
9:35pm More on those Qatari planes.

A French military spokesman has said four jets are expected to join the international campaign to enforce UN Security Council resolution 1973 - and will "soon" be arriving in the Libyan "zone of operations". Laurent Teisseire told reporters:

As announced by the Qatari authorities, it will deploy four planes in the zone to be able to take part in the operations, which is another sign of Arab participation in this international operation to protect civilians.

Mullen is giving a press conference now.

He didn't want to say anything about Misrata. Hmmm.

I haven't heard much from there in hours.

He says they haven't attacked any mobile surface to air radar sights in Tripoli.

(the AAAs?)

Also said they are not going after Gaddafi.

He said they aren't coordinating with opposition forces.

10:20pm Anita McNaught, reporting from Tripoli, tells Al Jazeera, above the noise of anti-aircraft fire, of the scene around her.

The shooting is much closer to our position now, but we still can't hear any aircraft. Of course, they may be flying too high, or the fire may be targeting missiles, as they were last night. It is impossible to see from here, though we have a good view of the city, we can't see any smoke or any fires breaking out.

But all around us, there is anti-aircraft fire going off. So there is an expectation of something happening, if it hasn't already ...

These offers of a ceasefire are a little strange, seeing as there is already the offer of a ceasefire from the foreign minister yesterday.

You have to ask if this is a decision being made in the full view of the Libyan public. When the military spokesman was asked if this was going to be broadcast on state TV and Libyans would be made aware that there was a ceasefire offer, he said no.

This was before many of the international reporters in Tripoli reported hearing an explosion and smoke coming from Gaddafi's compound.

#2318: Nato's top decision-making body has approved a military plan to implement the UN arms embargo on Libya, but failed to agree on a plan to enforce the no-fly zone, the Associated Press reports. Diplomats told the agency that Turkey's opposition to any Nato intervention in Libya stalled the approval of plans to launch patrols to prevent attacks on civilians by government aircraft. Both actions will require a separate "execute directive" by the North Atlantic Council, which requires the consensus of all 28 members of the military alliance. Diplomats said this could be issued on Tuesday at the earliest.

#0043: Earlier, a doctor at a hospital in Misrata, Libya's third city, told the BBC that the city was being attacked by forces loyal to Col Gaddafi. "Since early morning [on Sunday], they have been bombarding everything - all the buildings, all the homes, nobody is secure in this city," he said. "Gaddafi's militants and more than 25 tanks have been entering and bombarding the city. There are snipers all over. If you leave your front door, you are a target. I am not secure in the hospital and I cannot go home. I have not seen my family for a week. There is no secure way to get home."

It left the Mediterranean port of Toulon on Sunday and is currently taking on its consignment of Rafale and Super Etendard aircraft. It should take 24 hours to reach its destination but will need more time for the 20 aircraft it can carry to meet it and conduct landing exercises.
#0209: The BBC's Hugh Schofield in Paris says. "Once again, French jets flying from bases in France were in the skies over Benghazi on Sunday. The defence ministry spokesman here said that the allied action was already proving effective. The fact that French planes did not report any more strikes on targets on Sunday showed that the threat on Benghazi was easing, though he did concede it may be hard for pilots to hit tanks or armoured vehicles if they are close to heavily populated areas."

From watching Al Jazeera English, it seems that there was still some attacks by Gaddafi forces on Zintan today.

Libyan officals took journalists to see what they claimed was the damage from a missile attack. Officials said the missiles had struck very near to Gaddafi's tent.

Anita McNaught, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Tripoli, said journalists taken to the scene asked officials why there was no smoke or fire. One official said he didn't know because he wasn't a military expert.

12:11pm Meanwhile, the violence continues inside Libya. Rob Crilly, a correspondent for the Telegraph newspaper, tweets that he was halted during an attempt to get into Ajdabiya - south of Benghazi - because rebels in front of him were caught in an ambush and four were killed. Rebels may still be trapped inside Ajdabiya by pro-Gaddafi troops, he says.
12:41pm The Guardian newspaper's Chris McGreal was on the road today near Ajdabiya, around 160km south of Benghazi, where Gaddafi troops are still fighting with rebels. That appears to be the current front line. The rebels, he says, view the coalition airstrikes "as part of their campaign." That's not what the West wants to hear; they're trying to keep themselves from becoming embroiled in a full-scale regime change effort.
2:28pm Swiss journalist Gaetan Vannay has been in the western city of Zintan for the past nine days and says the eastern outskirts of the city are currently under fire and have been since yesterday.

On Al Jazeera English they say that there is heavy fighting going on in Ajdabiya.

The Gaddafi forces control the Eastern gate and the Western gate.

The Rebels have come in through the Southern gate.

There are many casualties heading back to Benghazi.

Gaddafi forces still seem to have some tanks and other weapons out there.

A spokesman for the opposition says they have retaken the Eastern gate.

Fighting is still going on in the city though.

#1310: More from the rebel spokesman in Misrata: "They [the government forces] have distributed more than 200 snipers along the street, and they're shooting in the direction of the main street and in the direction of the back streets. Our forces are trying to resist and to fend them off, and to expel them from the city, but he [Gaddafi] is using overwhelming firepower."
