Stupid phrases people actually say

Someone told me once that the "creeks" referred to in that phrase are the Creek Indians...anyone know if that's true or folklore?

I'm pretty sure that's nonsense, as are 97% of phrase origins one finds on the internet.

(Remember, 82% of statistics are made up.)

Redskins win the Super Bowl.

It has equally astounded me when in a debate with someone in here, they say "it's a mute point". I wanna reach thru my screen & choke them! Not quite sure why, that's one of my pet peaves.

That's one of mine also. Using the word Mute instead of Moot.

"Not to __________ or anything, but _______".

The phrase the follows the 'but' will ALWAYS do what the preceding phrase claims will not. For example, "Not to insult you or anything..." will ALWAYS be followed by an insult, sure as the sunrise. People use it as some sort of "get of jail free card" when they want to express a negative thought, I just think it makes them twice the *******.
