Adam291
Friday, June 12, 2009 Zorn: Horton to start Ryan O'Halloran Much will be made between now and the Washington Redskins' season opener about the competition between Chris Horton and Reed Doughty at strong safety. But the job isn't open. Horton is the starter, and Doughty will play a role on defense. "It's not the kind of battle that right tackle will be," coach Jim Zorn said after the Redskins wrapped up organized team activities Thursday. Doughty, who started Week 1 last year before his season was cut short by a neck injury, used minicamp and OTAs to gauge his physical readiness. "This was a time for me to get better and shake the rust off," he said. "That's Chris' spot right now, and I'm going to compete, but he's playing well. I really want to be a force on special teams and make an impact when I'm in there on defense." Said Zorn: "Reed is looking very sharp. They say in the weight room he's stronger and more flexible. I fully expect him to be in full gear and go hard this summer." The only starting positions realistically open in training camp are right tackle and kicker. Stephon Heyer enters summer vacation as the right tackle ahead of Jeremy Bridges and Mike Williams. "I definitely think [the position has] improved because Stephon had great OTAs," quarterback Jason Campbell said. "The biggest part for the O-line is communicating guy-to-guy, and that comes with continuity. Stephon had a chance to build that." At kicker, incumbent Shaun Suisham will be challenged by Dave Raymer. Zorn said a plan hasn't been finalized but that the Redskins could designate one kicker for each game instead of flip-flopping during the same game. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/jun/12/zorn-horton-will-be-the-starter-at-strong-safety/?feat=article_related_stories Sounds good to me. Thinking Skins
Is there really any surprise about Horton starting? Part of me was thinking (over Landry??) cause we knew he'd start over Doughty. But then the story'd be Moore to start, wouldn't it...
riggins_44
Now everyone will be clamoring for the Chris Horton autographed mini-helmet reward thing from BoA. Some restrictions may apply of course.
Adam291
I wonder if we'll see more of Doughty or Moore. Depending on the situation, I'd rather see Moore as the 3rd safety over Doughty.
Missin Meast
This is typical PFT .. I am sure its more of " his job to lose " who knows who will be starting 3 MONTHS from now...
IbleedBnG83
There was a report that previously said the job was up for grabs, but lets be serious. Its Horton's to lose.

NoVaSkins21
Maybe it's just me, but anytime Doughty is on the field, it can't be good. I'm so glad that he got the nod last year to start the Saints game last year, otherwise we would never found about Horton and may have been stuck with Doughty all year. BIGGS_DADDY
The only slim chance I saw for Horton not starting is if Kareem Moore develops into a good enough FS for Landry to slide back down to SS. No surprise here.

ArmchairRedskin
I had no idea Horton was in on 76 tackles. You add in the sack and the three INTs, and this news is really not news. He performed well above and beyond anything you could have expected from a guy drafted that late. Cheers to Horton and cheers to our staff for finding the guy. ChiefPowhatan17
I'm glad that Zorn made this distinction. I think Horton deserves to have his starting role, considering he really stepped up last year when he was asked to.

dellman
It is my opinion that as a group, the Redskins have the best safeties in the NFL. I cannot think of another foursome that can interchange and be just as effective as the Redskins can with these 4 guys.
