ABC2 News: Maryland's First Case of Swine Flu

I get that this could be a big deal, and quite honestly I'm semi freaked about the whole thing...

But...

I realize the people in health care need to be prepared, but why does this have to be covered so readily in the media? There's not even alot of cases yet. I'd almost guarantee a normal flu or even a basic cold spreads quicker than this.

It also seems that most people are recovering okay from this thing. I realize that doesn't mean everyone will, but it just seems to me that the only people that have died so far are Mexicans. Do they have a weakened immune system? Or is ours stronger due to what we have here versus what they have there? I realize there's no vaccination, but is for some reason our lifestyle helping us against this thing?

I'm not completely positive on all this stuff, just some observations from someone who is really quite clueless on this topic.

****, Washington is on the list now too...

http://www.kndo.com/Global/story.asp?S=10276627

WASH-Washington health officials report 6 probable cases of swine flu in the state.

Three of the cases are in King County, which includes Seattle, two are in Snohomish County, just north of Seattle, and one is in Spokane County in northeast Washington.

Officials told a news conference Wednesday night that samples have been sent to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for formal confirmation.

Dr. David Fleming, director and health officer for Public Health-Seattle & King County, says he expects the region will see more infections of the swine flu H1N1 virus, which has been confirmed or suspected in dozens of patients in at least a dozen other states and several foreign countries.

(I work in Spokane County...and we have a ton of people sick at work.)

I'm heading out to a battle of the bands tomorrow night at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino...I'm tempted to wear a doctor mask just to freak people out :D

I thought about buying some flu medicine at the store during lunch just to see what the reaction would be. They have had two cases here (in an elementary school) and schools are out until Monday.

We now have a possible case here in Broward County

That mask for tonight may be a good idea.

Its not nice to call it "Swine Flu" anymore... pigs don't like that. Call it H1N1 Flu... if you really must label it.

meh...I'm not good at politicaly correct stuff. Anyway, we just call it "the oink".

Another case reported in SE Washington state, where my mom, sister and her family live...

An employee of mine's ex husband went to Mexico last week. She asked how he felt, as her daughter has visitation with the dad tonight. He confessed that he has been sick, so they agreed to nix the visitation until he is seen by doctors.

What I find odd is, almost everyone who has it in the United States has been to Mehico. I would like to know, how many people have actually gone to Mexico post outbreak and not caught it. Other than that, it seems like a normal flu bug with extra media attention.

EXACTLY! Millions of people get the flu every year. People dont freak the **** out, they just drink more OJ and spend a few days on the couch watching The Price Is Right.

This one is a media firestorm because it has an ominous sounding name. SWINE FLU! That sounds worse than SARS.

Anyone remember what SARS did? Yeah, me either, but i remember the name.

Yeah apparently it was a flu that just affected pigs, but now it is being found in humans.

Right, but nobody is contracting it from a pig or from eating pork. Yet none of that matters to ****ing Chicken Littles all over the place.

A few quotes.

CAIRO – Egypt began slaughtering the roughly 300,000 pigs in the country Wednesday as a precaution against swine flu even though no cases have been reported here, infuriating farmers who blocked streets and stoned vehicles of Health Ministry workers who came to carry out the government's order.

Global health experts said the mass slaughter of pigs is entirely unnecessary and a waste of resources. But Egypt's reaction was colored by its experiences with bird flu.
Experts suspect swine flu, a strange new mix of pig, bird and human flu virus, originated with pigs then jumped to humans and is now spreading through human-to-human contact. Health authorities have said you cannot contract the flu by eating pork.

"It is unfortunate," the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization Chief Veterinary Officer Joseph Domenech said of Egypt's decision. "The crisis today is in transmission from human to human. It has nothing to do with pigs," he told The Associated Press.

All that bacon........wasted. Egypt must pay. :chair:

Don't get me wrong dude, I went out and purchased a small bottle of Purell to keep in my car and I have been using it like crazy. Every time I leave an office, I use purell, if I don't catch the swine flu, I guess I can thank Purell.

I sneezed in front of a customer today (for some reason altoids make me sneeze) you could tell it made her kind of uneasy.

I did get a funny text from a buddy of mine today though.

"It once said that a black man would be President when pigs flew. Well behold 100 days into his Presidency, swine flu." (hardy har har)

i had a girl tell me today that she couldn't catch swine flu bc she doesn't eat bacon

Tell her that they were feeding chickens bacon in Texas and that the chickens fertilizer was being used to grow vegetables, and Texas chickens and texas vegetables were shipped all over the world. Then teach her about biological magnification.
