ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- The Washington Redskins won the fan Pro Bowl voting in nine of 19 positions for the NFC, the result of an aggressive marketing campaign that paid dividends even for the lowest rated kicker in the league.

Tallies released by the league Thursday show the Redskins on top where serious Pro Bowl consideration is deserved (middle linebacker London Fletcher) and where it's not (kicker Shaun Suisham, who leads the NFL in missed field goals).

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees received the most votes overall, followed by New York Jets quarterback Brett Favre and New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning. But two Redskins were in the top 10: running back Clinton Portis (fourth) and tight end Chris Cooley (10th).

Cooley didn't win his position, though, finishing behind Jason Witten of the Dallas Cowboys.

Other Redskins who finished first at their position include fullback Mike Sellers, tackle Chris Samuels, defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin, strong safety Chris Horton, free safety LaRon Landry and special teams player Khary Campbell.

The Redskins' "Vote the Redskins Ticket" campaign was so successful that the league sent an e-mail to the 31 other teams last month pointing out that Washington players were leading in 16 of 19 positions and that it would be a good time to "promote Pro Bowl voting to your fans."

The publicity over an impending Redskins landslide appeared to create enough of a backlash for seven players to lose their leads, but the final results are still dominated by a team that is 7-6 and has lost four of five. The Giants, who have the best record in the conference, won the voting in only four positions.

Fan balloting, which ended Tuesday, counts for one-third of the total Pro Bowl voting. Coaches and players, who have yet to be polled, each count for one-third.

The Pro Bowl teams are announced Dec. 16.

Matt Terl did a real good piece on the voting that the players do for other players:

At least we weren't embarrassed by having some knuckle head make it besides the kicker.

Fans vote for nine Redskins

The "Vote The Redskins Ticket" push worked. Nine Redskins won the fan Pro Bowl balloting: running back Clinton Portis (fourth overall), fullback Mike Sellers, Samuels, Griffin, Fletcher, Horton (fourth among rookies), safety LaRon Landry, kicker Shaun Suisham and special-teamer Khary Campbell. Chris Cooley was 10th overall but second among NFC tight ends to Dallas' Jason Witten. The Pro Bowl rosters will be announced on Tuesday. The voting is split a third each among fans, players and coaches.

The whole Pro Bowl balloting process is a joke. It's nice to see a lot of Redskins on there but be honest, do they really deserve it? Fletcher and Portis, that's about it.

The balloting should be done by players and coaches only as they are the ones who battle it out each week. Leave the press and fans out of it as they have made it into nothing but a popularity contest.

Being a "Pro Bowler" means nothing these days and the balloting process shouldn't take place until after the last game of the season.

- I want to know who was voting for that unpredictable kicker of ours??

-The whole thing sounds stupid now, 9 positions of the skins voted in inculding the lowest ranked kicker.

- It would have been better if the headline just said 8 of the redskins are voted in to the probowl by the fans. Come on guys, Suisham?? I thought he was a good kicker till this year, what happend to him anyway?

fletcher and portis are the only deserving redskins IMO. I wonder what the ramifications are going to be in regards to our cap situation and that is something alot of people didnt think about before hand i believe. Most every players contract has escalators or bonus payouts attached to pro-bowl invites so it might be a little interesting to see if it makes us be a little tighter next season.

he feels left out about being the only one not getting called out in the media by Zorn so hes been trying really hard to be one of the guys. Just when he think he finally gets it Zorn blames the holder go figure.:D

Only Portis, Sellers, and Fletcher deserve to go. For Sellers, its LOOOONG overdue, hope he makes it, more than Im pulling for the others on that list. He's been underrated his whole career.

Samuels will go in on name recognition, but he's had an average year at best.

Laron making it is a joke.

Chris Horton? I dunno, maybe Defensive ROY, but I can name a few safeties that are better than him at this point. He's good, he's just not best in the NFL yet.
