Why does it seem the GOP always use fear to get elected? What about McCains age then.

I am not one of these people that align themselves with a party for the sake of it. I know the history of this party. What trips me out is, in this country, where people have access to knowledge with out retribution, most people think Republicans are for white people, and democrats for poor whites, black latinos, or anyother fringe group. I know that Abe Lincoln was a republican, and the republican party pushed for the abolishment of slavery. I know that change with Linden Johnson signing the Civil Rights bill endingthe edict "segragation now, and segragation for ever" given by George Wallace. With that I feel both parties only care about my interest when it suits them. I mean could the Industrial Revolution really happen with slave labor still in existence? And vice versa, if Linden B. Johnosn wasn't so concern that Richard Nixon was courting black votes, and the waining support for the Vietnam War, would he really have signed the Civil Rights bill at that time. I feel that based on the moment, my interest goes from individual to national, so niether party really cares about my interest until election day. So that is why I am a registered Independent.

But that will chance after this election. I have watched GOP conduct negative campaigns for the last three elections. With George Bush, the first time it was about Bill Clinton bringing sleaze to the Oval Office. Then it was John Kerry and some swift boats. Now it's Obama is a muslim, he's a socialist, he's unamerican, he's Rev. Wright, or Bill Ayers. Constantly the GOP has not given answers, but endorse fear. I have yet to see a campaign based on McCain age, or the fact that Palin is second in line if he passes while in office. I don;t know. It just seesm that the GOP always uses fear tactics, and calls them facts. Well the fact is under Bush over 2,000 civilians have died. How come the Dem's don't use the figures from 9-11 and Katrina to scar people not to vote with the GOP?

I'm a Democrat so I think I can give a decent answer.

McCain's age is out of bounds. It's not a legitimate point of attack. John McCain might very well live well into his 9th decade and be very sharp until the day he dies. This is why you haven't heard one peep out of the Obama campaign regarding McCain's age or health. It's just not the moral way to conduct a campaign.

As for using 9/11 as a campaign platform, that is also nonsensical. 9/11 was not the fault of any American, be it Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, or our various intelligence and transportation security agencies. The terrorist scum found a weakness and they exploited it pure and simple. And many of them have paid the ultimate price for their attrocity.

Don't waste your time trying to reconcile the political parties of 100 years ago vs. where they are today. They are the same in name only. Political parties evolve with the political climate and have no interest in consistency. Popularity is everything.

As for negative campaigns, it's just not our bag baby. We're not good at it, we don't have a wealth of people who are willing to parrot falsehoods thus sacrificing their credibility for political gain, an army of miniature G. Gordon Liddy's. The day Democrats adopt that strategy is the day I become an indy or Republican.

I think both parties use fear and use it extensively. Just differently.

Republicans = vote Democrat and you will die. The terrorists will get you. You will see a mushroom cloud in your backyard. And if you survive that they will tax you into oblivion. Democrats will censor you into oblivion and steal all your liberties.

Democrats = vote Republican and no one will take care of you. Social Security will collapse. The elderly will be thrown out onto the street. Nursing homes will refuse to care for any but the rich. Republicans will censor you into oblivion and steal all your liberties.

Actually, the Libertarians used to sell a t-shirt featuring a donkey and an elephant, both pointing guns at the camera, and the words "Your money or your rights: Vote Libertarian."

Really? McCain is old and Palin would be next? I have never heard that from a Democrat supporter...

And have you really not heard answers? I mean you may not have heard answers that you agree with. But I'm pretty sure that has been plenty about buying mortgages, and health care tax credits, and an Afghanistan surge, and an energy policy. Have you not heard any of that?

Age is an legitimate issue. It's just not in Obama's nature to campaign like that. Trust me, if Hillary was the nominee; she would've used every attack in the book. Simple fact; Dems usually nominate men who don't have the attack instinct. Bill Clinton not included in that. He would attack you if needed.

If the dems about this strategy you would become a Republican? Fankly, everyone should become indepedents.

Independents should also start running for office more. At least independents can stand their own and not cow tow to any party.

Remember now, a democrat used a mushroom cloud commercial. Used it once but still used it.

People always use fear. Actually, it's tame compared to what they did in the 1800's.

But Obama has attacked and he has done negative ads. For example when McCain said the fundamentals of the economy are strong, Obama pounced pretty relentlesly, same as when McCain bragged about voting with Bush over 90% of the time. I just don't think Obama has crossed over the line of what I would consider nasty.

He doesn't have the instinct to do it. Presidential campaigns can be real nasty.

Mccain is just following the old Republican playbook.

I don't think it's just a GOP thing. Democrats do it too. Maybe not as bad in this particular election, but they do it too.

If McCain were to win and then die in office, which I am no way hoping he would, that would be my biggest fear............Palin president

Brandymac and I have already set up a date at bar to drink heavily.
