I like the part of the MSNBC article that says McCain is trying to save face. MSNBC is a joke of a news organization. If we are going to discuss this, the article should not come from an in the tank for Obama MSNBC.

It's taken from the Associated Press. Now instead of attacking the source, why don't you discuss the issue.

Yeah, you would think so. But you would also think once you committed to a Presidential debate, you would show up. Or once you taunted a guy for not having more debates, you would at least show up for the ones you've got.

There's nothing wrong with letting changes in events change your course of action.

HH, your getting beat like a drum in this thread. McCain didn't respond to a crisis like he claimed. You're falling for the same lie he told Letterman. He did 3 more interviews before going back to washington last night after he was "suspending his campaign"... I guess suspending only meant "the debate" because everything else he did was business as usual.

So busy campaigning he didn't have time to read the 3 page paulson report.

Assuming you are honest about your reasons. Claiming your campaign is suspended and then doing more interviews and not getting to DC until late yesterday tends to suggest his handling of the crisis was what he implied.

I think it was a large poker hand that McCain gambled on and ended up having to fold. It was the right decision on his part, but a dumb thing to bet on from the start.

Obama has AK in the hole (economic meltdown and Palin losing popularity). McCain has 78 offsuit...not the worst hand he could get but much worse than the last hand which was JJ (doing pretty well in the polls, Palin was popular, first debate was going to be about foreign policy...his strong suit).

Obama bets out. McCain pretty much knows Obama has the better hand right now (economy, etc again) but opts to call (a "gut" decision...the economy is "fundamentally strong").

Flop comes 6 10 2. No real help for Obama but he definitely still has the high hand. McCain has come up with an inside straight draw (he could possibly make himself look the hero), which is a risky hand to play, especially if you know your opponent probably has better cards. He decides to gamble and bets out big time ("suspends his campaign", says the debate should be postponed, has to fly Washington to put "Country first"). Obama doesn't buy the semi-bluff and raises (we still need to do the debate, McCain doesn't need to be scared of debating me). McCain is already in for a bunch so calls...hoping things go his way on the turn or river (he actually is able to help broker a deal even though the process was going on long before he got there).

Turn comes up A which is very bad for McCain (he basically does nothing at best and disrupts the process at worst and the whole thing ends up looking political). Uh oh. This means Obama has a pair of Aces. Now, McCain could either go All In in the hopes of a miracle straight or making Obama fold (who the hell knows what that would entail) or fold himself. At this point he is already in deep in the pot, but isn't getting the best pot odds. He can tell that Obama isn't very likely to bite on a bluff so his only hope is a miracle 9. He (or his advisers) doesn't see that as very likely so he folds (Ok, I'll do the debate). The lesser of two bad situations. He folds, he loses a bunch of money (went for the big play but got burned...looking somewhat foolish in the process). He doesn't fold and doesn't get the miracle 9 he loses out even worse (Obama shows up to the debate, and in some form possibly gets 90 free minutes to explain his positions and how they differ from McCain's in front of a HUGE audience without McCain responding).

What is the lesson here? Don't bet on inside straight draws unless you are pretty sure your opponent has a weak hand. :silly:
