The Predict the Redskins 2008 Season thread game (with rules)

It's interesting how the attitude of the fans on this team changes in a matter of days based on what happens, so I thought it would be fun to see where the fans opinion changes as the season progresses. So unlike the typical prediction thread (where you make only 1 prediction and are stuck with it) I'd kind of like to see where attitudes go on highs and lows as moves are made, injuries occur and opponets get better or worse.

The Rules:

Post what you think the Redskins will do in 2008 right now (give a record)

as the season progresses (ie FA, draft, OTA, training camp, preseason etc.) go back to your first post and add your new record and a opinion why you changed (or didn't change) your opinion. DO NOT ERASE OR ALTER THE FIRST PREDICITION!!! Keep adding your predictions via editing the post. You're on you honor for not altering previous posts :)

example:

1st entry: 8-8

when we get a new HC: 9-7, Coach X will do as good as Gibbs 2.0

FA: 7-9, we lost player X and didn't address key position issues

etc.........

Feel free to keep playing up through week 16 of the 2008 season.

Personally, I think it will be interesting to look back on your thoughts and the thoughts of your fellow Skins fans throughout the year.

And now to start it off:

1/28/2008: 12-4, Maybe I'm a bit delusional since I have no clue who our next HC will be and the Skins are in a bit of chaos but I got a gut feeling that something great will happen this year. Although my opinion will probably change when we get a HC announcement eventually.

4/28/2008:

10-6

Not a slant on our new HC or who we drafted. But we have a hard schedule playing the AFCN and our first 3 NFCE games on the road. I actually like Zorn and I hope that the fans and our FO/owner gives him enough time to develop into a really talented HC (give him at least 3-5 years). After thinking about it I liked alot of what we did in the draft. We made prudent trades. We addressed a need by going after talented top tier WRs. Now you may think it's overkill but Moss, ARE and Thrash missed multiple games b/c of injury. Now we have potentially 4 WR starters with Thrash and Mix both able to be there in spot duty. Not that Cooley has any injury issues but Davis addresses this and will cause matchup problems. I actually think we have found another "Heyer Diamond" by signing the kid from Ap. state. Do we still have needs. Yep. But I think the Skins feel that they'll be able to develop talent at DL and OL for 2009 and beyond and have addressed septh at S and CB. I hope that LBs stay healthy as we have depth and injury issues there.

Also, glade we didn't sign Johnson. But am very happy we kept Collins and Rock.

5/1/2008:

10-6 or 11-5

After looking at the UDFAs I'm more sold that at least Brown and possibly Gatewood will be playing on an NFL team in 2009. Hopefully, they'll stay Skins.

I also like the fact the Skins attempted to address OL even if it was through UDFA and most of the guys we signed will get cut as they get ready for arena league, CFL, one of those new football leagues or a 9-5 job.

We have a plan, which seems to make more sense now than other plans made by our FO.

9/1/2008:

8-8

I really, really want to say 10-6 still and looking at the schedule I still honestly think it is very plausible to win 10 (even 11). But I don't see the wins coming early even in my ideal prediction and b/c of this and other things part of me thinks this team only goes 8-8.

Since I have the floor here I'll tell you what I think of the team.

QB- not even going to discuss Todd or Colt b/c for the most part it's on Jason's shoulders.

Jason Campbell out of the many Redskin QBs to walk through the doors since Gibbs 1.0 has ended may be the QB with the best potential to be a superstar. Only one guy I remember may have impressed me more as a young Redskins QB- Trent Green. The only problem is that we've yet to see him finish a game and even Eli Manning (who I think is highly overrated) has done this a few times in his short career. Coaching changes and system overhauls haven't helped, but I do think Ceratto and The Danny brought Zorn in with the full intent of being comitted to Campbell and Zorn's WCO (just a reminder Campbell had his best games in a WCO system at Auburn- although we don't know how similar Zorn's WCO is to that system). I expect Campbell to struggle again, maybe not as bad as he did in the Gibbs/Saunders cluster**** scheme (yes, combine the worst of Gibbs and Saunders schemes and that was last years offense) and he will take alot of heat from the media, the cult of Colt, the more reduced Cult of Todd and the realists (who thinks we'll suck no matter who the QB is b/c if they wear B&G then they are flawed). I'm hoping that Zorn will use the run to help set Jason up to make plays and help counter some of Jason's struggles.

RB- We honestly have some of the better RBs in the league and hopefully we will do abetter job using them with Zorn. Portis works better in Zone schemes where he can use his quickness, agility and vision to find small holes and turn plays in to 10+ yrd. gains. Betts is more of the in-between the tackles guy....but his first step can be slow. If he can get that first step and accelerate he becomes very elusive (note why Betts looks better running routes, running screens and draw plays). Betts is the more patient of the two and that helps him on certain plays and hinders him on others. I really want to both these guys in the backfield with CP staying in to block and Betts running routes.

TE- best depth, possibly strongest element of our entire team- even with a rookie in the mix.

WR- This is a serious area of concern for me. Moss was hurt and had the dropises alot last year. ARE stepped up but also was hurt alot. Thrash had one game of brilliance and then.....got hurt. And this is our guys 1-3 again this year. The preseason didn't sell me either way on whether these guys are better and can help Jason. Sure ARE played well in the HOF game, but is hurt already. Behind them is the highly inexperienced Devin Thomas. We really shouldn't be that suprised about Thomas as his major drawback in the draft was that he was very, very green and people wondered if he was just a one year wonder. I think Thomas can grow into his role in a year or two. Malcom Kelly worries me alot more. The Skins took a chance on him b/c when he is healthy he really looks like a beast. He was getting rave reviews in camp, but now he's hurt and hasn't taken a single snap in the preseason and will miss the opener.

So basically we have 3 WRs.....that's it and none of them have a history of health. That's scary. Guess the Davis draft was a smart move b/c we're going to rely alot on Cooley and Davis this season.

OL- If they're healthy.....they are a pretty strong unit. Preseason did bother me a bit as the team struggled in pass protection. I like the promotion of Heyer as RT if only to preserve Jansen's health (and the health of Jason Campbell as Jansen looked horrible in pass coverage).

DE- not sure why we kept six DEs other than possibly to keep them off the Giants roster. Sure Taylor may miss the opener, but we could have used that extra spot for a WR IMO. I think Taylor was a huge move even if he doesn't get double digit sacks this year if only b/c opposing teams have to account for him. My only true concern is that opposing teams will try to exploit our smaller DE corp. by running at Taylor/Carter or to the outside teams are going to try to outpower our guys.

DT- Griff has to stay healthy. I also hate the promotion of Golston to starter. I really hope it lights a fire under Anthony Montgomery's ass b/c I think Golston is a terrible run stopper. Go back to the Carolina game and the 2006 season for examples. Hope I'm wrong.

LB- the 2nd biggest concern for me. Of our starters 2 of 3 have injury issues. McIntosh looks like the biggest concern as he seems to lack some of the speed and explosiveness that he had pre-injury. He seems to be thinking and not acting on instinct and that is kind of typical in post-ligament injuries. Blades is coming off an injury. Campbell proved to me once and for all in the Carolina game that he's a ST specialist like Rock and Vernon Fox and Ade Jimoh. He may be a decent spot guy but I don't want to see him start again in a long while. Fincher looked impressive and I hope he can play like that in the regular season...if so we found a "diamond"

CB- If Springs and Smoot can stay healthy we really should be ok. Rogers must be related to Wolverine b/c his recovery and return has been amazing. He actually returned to 2007 form (which was his best year as a pro before the injury) with his play in Carolina (the rare player that made plays in that game). Torrence is still not bad as a nickle/dime guy. Tryon should learn alot this year......in practice.

S- Very young, very raw. But I gotta say I'm impressed by the rookies and FA Hamilton. They earned the roster spots, period. Landry is the only guy who looks like he has superstar talent of the group, but Doughty, Moore, Horton and Hamilton have been able to make plays, contribute and do good things for this team. They work hard, do whatever it takes and play with alot of heart.....wish more guys did that.

LS- The Red Snapper didn't make the pro=bowl b/c of his Madden rating....he'll do what he does best again, like he always does

K- Suisham has his own cult following and as long as he can boot the ball and make FGs like he's been doing (for the most part) he'll have a place here

P- Brooks is growing and he'll have rookie mistakes this year, but I think overall he'll still be a much better option now and in the long run than frost

KR- Rock really isn't the homerun hitter of KRs. He isn't Devin Hester. But he gets you almost 30 yds. per KO and rarely fumbles. Guys a leader and a ST specialist. Solid as a rock.....bad pun

PR- This worries me again. I really don't want ARE to do it. Tryon? Thomas? didn't see either of these guys do PRs though in the preseason. Not sure what to do about this one......(joke, Get Keenan McCardell on the phone).

We have a very tough early schedule and I see us at .500 through most of the season and I think it will come down to the final 5 games to determine whether we make the playoffs or not.

Ideally: I see us at 6-5 with 5 left.

Worst case: I see us at 4-7 (this is assuming we get swept by Dallas, and lose to the Saints and Steelers at home)

last 5:

vs. Giants

@ Ravens

@ Bengals

vs. Eagles

@ 49ers

after last year I almost like our chances on the road vs. NY and Philly better than at home but I think we'll be at least 2-1 on the final road games thus, I think WC we'll be 2-3 or BC 4-1

so: I see us being as good as 10-6 or as bad as 6-10.....so 8-8 seems to be the middle ground.

personally i say 12-4 looking at this years opponents i think its certainly possible espiecally with a decent coach like mooch or meeks

if its fassel id say 11-5

See, that's the point of this- you can change your opinion on this prediction thread. When we get a new HC. That's the idea, just add your new prediction to your first post.

and by doing this maybe it can cut down on prediction threads to help out our mods a bit ;) :applause:

1/28: This is difficult without knowing who the HC will be. But I'll do this on the assumption of the "F" guy. 6-10. Can I change this if he isn't the coach?

Yep. When we get a new HC, go back to your original post and add your new prediction.

So, if Cowher (just threw a name there) gets hired, under the 6-10 prediction put your new prediction and explain why.

01/28/2008 7-9, (Learning curve for everyone, especially Campbell, depleted secondary)

02/14/2008, since Zorn hire, 8-8 (Learning curve still will hamper the offense but I am happy a fresh staff has been hired rather than a retread staff. Defense remains unchanged and could carry us to a winning record with personel improvements. Although I have no real faith still of those in charge of personel.)

04-28-08, post NFL draft, 8-8, Defense remains unchanged post draft with no significant personel improvements, and with Rogers and McIntosh coming off major injuries, I'm starting to sense a significant drop off in performance this season. Especially if our D-line from last season has health troubles. I am really tempted to up my prediction to a winning record because overall I am happy what this draft and what it may be able to do for the offense. But there is still a learning curve for Campbell. So everything is a wash post draft.

08-11-08, post Bills preseason game. 9-7, First game we got to see some starters playing. I'm starting to have a man crush on some of our late round picks, especially Chad Rinehardt. Our passing game seems to be coming along nicely, although I think Kelly and Thomas missing a good part of the preseason due to injuries(suggested lack of preparation?) is really going to hinder what progress the rest of the offense has made. Otherwise I'd push my win total prediction up into the double digits. On defense I'm still worried about cornerback. If Taylor can be half the player he has been in the past, our defensive pressure on the quarterback should compensate. The preseason has me feeling better about this team than prior to preseason.

1/28/08 10-6 Lose Tie Breaker in NFC East Title Chase (There is no reason with current personnel and better play calling, why the redskins cannot improve in the next season; however, if enough personnel is gutted, or FA not retained, this could go down hill very fast. Can't predict how the season goes officially till I see the schedule though, but I'm confident that 10-6 is easily achievable.)

I am going to start off at 9-7 regardless of who our new HC is. There will be a learning curve for the first year and not to mention Zorn has never called a play in the NFL to my knowledge. The defense will carry us this year, but a winning season is imperative to keep rabid fans from storming Danny's castle. :D

That won't be good enough to make the playoffs this time around as I think the whole NFC sucked this past season but will improve across the board. I base this on nothing but my opinion and complete lack of research put into the response. :D

Edit (to make it more concise):

1-28-08 9-7

Well right now since I am a TRUE skin fan I say what I say every year

19-0 Super Bowl Champs baby!

Ditto. If it were to happen, just once, I could afford to have one hell of a party. Since the team is in flux I am guessing the odds on us are gonna be long for getting to the SB. Let alone going undefeated.
