George Preston Marshall was trying to drum up interest in his team and the biggest thing going in Boston at the time was the Red Sox. He may have felt that it was great his coach was an Indian, and it would tie in well, but he chose Redskins because it was very close to Red Sox. Hayes and plead the case of his people. Finally, in 1885, Chief Joseph and his followers were allowed to return to the Pacific Northwest, although their new home, the Colville Indian Reservation, was far from their homeland in the Wallowa Valley.
