Jimmy Carter to receive hospice care

In his final days, Jimmy Carter on cusp of a humanitarian goal: Eradicating a parasitic worm

Just a few hours before President Carter underwent his first radiation treatment for brain cancer, he spoke of his hope, in the time he had left, to purge the world of a parasitic worm disease.

That was in 2015.

“I’d like the last Guinea worm to die before I do,” the 39th president told reporters at the Carter Center. “We know where all of them are, so obviously that would be my top priority.”

Carter had set up the global Guinea Worm Eradication Program in 1986, when about 3.5 million people across rural Africa and Asia were afflicted by the excruciating parasite that has plagued humans for thousands of years.

The 98-year-old, now in hospice at home in Plains, Ga., is on the cusp of reaching his goal: The number of reported human cases dwindled in 2022 to 13 — an all-time low.

“We've joked many times: Who's going to win — the Guinea worm or Jimmy Carter?” said Dr. Peter Bourne, Carter’s former drug czar who became an assistant secretary-general at the United Nations. “Thirteen is pretty close to zero. For the millions of people who didn't get the Guinea worm infection, he has had an enormous impact.”

A Four-Decade Secret: One Man’s Story of Sabotaging Carter’s Re-election

WASHINGTON — It has been more than four decades, but Ben Barnes said he remembers it vividly. His longtime political mentor invited him on a mission to the Middle East. What Mr. Barnes said he did not realize until later was the real purpose of the mission: to sabotage the re-election campaign of the president of the United States.

It was 1980 and Jimmy Carter was in the White House, bedeviled by a hostage crisis in Iran that had paralyzed his presidency and hampered his effort to win a second term. Mr. Carter’s best chance for victory was to free the 52 Americans held captive before Election Day. That was something that Mr. Barnes said his mentor was determined to prevent.

His mentor was John B. Connally Jr., a titan of American politics and former Texas governor who had served three presidents and just lost his own bid for the White House. A former Democrat, Mr. Connally had sought the Republican nomination in 1980 only to be swamped by former Gov. Ronald Reagan of California. Now Mr. Connally resolved to help Mr. Reagan beat Mr. Carter and in the process, Mr. Barnes said, make his own case for becoming secretary of state or defense in a new administration.

Grandson of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter says ‘we’re in the final chapter’ in health update

The grandson of former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn Carter said “it’s clear we’re in the final chapter” in an interview with People published Saturday.

Jimmy Carter, 98, entered hospice care in February. The former president beat brain cancer in 2015 but faced a series of health scares in 2019, and consequentially underwent surgery to remove pressure on his brain.

Family and caregivers have been the only recent visitors to the Carters’ Georgia home, Josh Carter told People. But “there’s always somebody at the house” to keep the Carters company, he said.

Former President Jimmy Carter spends 12 months in hospice care

Sunday will mark one year since America’s longest-living president, 99-year-old Jimmy Carter, entered hospice care to spend his remaining time at home with his family.

The 39th U.S. president elected to receive hospice care Feb. 18, 2023, according to a statement The Carter Center issued that day.

The announcement came after a series of shorter hospital stays, although no illness was disclosed at the time. Carter previously received treatment for liver cancer and melanoma that spread to his brain.

Jimmy Cater is a tough SOB. Hats off to him.

So it's been 2.5 months since his wife's passing, and he hangs on.

Makes 100 if he lasts until October 1st. Will he? Who knows. But Carter passing sometime during the summer or fall would be his last gift to America, as I could that at least providing a brief respite from what will certainly be a nasty election campaign.

Trump will say something idiotic as usual.

Thing is, both Biden and Trump probably are gone in 10 years.  Even Bubba doesn’t look that great.

I'll wait for a better source. I'd be surprised if the White House isn't one of the first to respond to this and it's been 10+ minutes since that initial report.

Not saying it's wrong, just that I'm hesitant.

We had Jason Carter signs in our yard when he was running for Governor...& hated to see Nathan Deal just crush him in the debates.

(And I'll take this opportunity to point out, once again, that Brian Kemp is an idiot.)

We really, really need a Democrat in that office.
