Tourists Watch Russian Man Get Devoured by Shark on Egypt Beach

 

Tourists visiting the popular Egyptian resort of Hurghada watched a man get eaten alive by a shark just feet away from a crowded beach.

 

The incident occurred on the beach of the Dream Beach hotel, according to Russian media reports, which said the victim was a Russian citizen.

 

Russia’s consul-general in Hurghada, Viktor Voropayev, told the country’s TASS news agency that the deadly attack happened Thursday.

 

“A Russian died as a result of the shark attack,” he said, identifying the victim as 23-year-old “V. Popov,” who he said was not a tourist but had been living in Egypt for several months. Russian media reports named the victim as Vladimir Popov.

 

Terrifying footage of the encounter shows hotel staffers screaming for swimmers to get out of the water as the shark’s fin can be seen approaching.

 

Popov can then be seen struggling with the shark before it becomes clear to all those watching that it’s a losing battle. According to Russian media reports, his father was watching on the beach at the time of the attack, and Popov had cried out for him as he struggled to escape the shark.

 

“It’s eating his remains now,” one witness who filmed the attack can be heard saying. Shortly after, the beast pulled him completely underwater.

Nonprofit employee says he found 3 severed heads at desk and sage burning after filing workplace complaints

 

A man at an Illinois nonprofit was greeted by a macabre and occult-like scene when he arrived at work two weeks ago: finding a bunch of sage burning and three severed heads placed atop his desk.

 

Dale Wheatley is a delivery man for the Anatomical Gift Association of Illinois, a group of eight in-state medical schools with a shared mission. According to the organization’s website, the AGA “procures, prepares and preserves donations for medical and scientific study,” and making its facilities open to health professionals and students. The donations obtained by the AGA are “an individual’s body after death,” their website explains.

 

But, according to Wheatley, the AGA has seen far better days.

 

“The place is deplorable. It’s in shabby conditions,” he said at a press conference this week reported by the Chicago Tribune. “If you’re in there for more than five minutes, if you start walking around, you start to stick to the floor.”

 

In comments reported by Chicago-based Fox affiliate WFLD, Wheatley said some donated bodies have been returned to the nonprofit due to the poorly preserved and kept state they are in.

 

“They’re sending donors back because of mold and rot, bugs,” he said. “There’s been instances where I’ve pulled donors from our storing room out of the racks, and rats have chewed through the bottom of the bag, through the feet.”

 

And the trio of severed heads, Wheatley believes, are retaliation for a recent series of complaints he lodged with his supervisors.

 

“My boss walked by, I asked him why the heads were at my desk,” he told WFLD. “He said they need to get back with their bodies so we can send them to cremation. I said, I understand that, ‘Why are they at my desk?’ and he said, ‘I don’t know Dale, there’s a lot of strange things happening.'”

 

The heads, Wheatley added, had an “obnoxious smell.”

Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau volcano spews ash, lava in new eruption

 

Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau volcano has erupted, spewing ash as high as 3 kilometers (2 miles) into the air, officials said Saturday.

 

The volcano island located in Indonesia’s Sunda Strait between the main Java and Sumatra islands has erupted at least seven times since late Friday, Indonesia’s Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center said.

 

It was the longest eruption since the explosive collapse of the mountain caused a deadly tsunami in 2018 along the coasts of Java and Sumatra, the center said. There were no casualties reported in the latest eruption and no evacuation order was issued. The nearest settlement is 16 1/2 kilometers (10 1/2 miles) away.

 

The center’s closed-circuit camera showed lava flares and the volcano continuously erupting until Saturday morning.

Some neighborhoods in Broward County in Florida are under quarantine Tuesday after sightings of invasive giant African land snails, known to be one of the most dangerous species, officials said.

Essentially, the quarantine means it is illegal to move a giant African land snail or plants, which includes soil, compost, and yard waste, in or out of the area without a compliance agreement from the agriculture department.

Giant African land snails eat at least 500 different types of plants, and they can also chomp through stucco, plastic recycling bins and even signs. Their calcium shells bear pointy edges sharp enough to blow out tires of vehicles that run over them.

The snails also pose a health risk to humans because they carry a parasite called rat lungworm, which can cause meningitis, according to the state Department of Agriculture. The condition leads to swelling of membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says.

Freight train carrying hot asphalt, molten sulfur plunges into Yellowstone River as bridge fails

 

A bridge that crosses the Yellowstone River in Montana collapsed early Saturday, plunging portions of a freight train carrying hazardous materials into the rushing water below.

 

 

The train cars were carrying hot asphalt and molten sulfur, Stillwater County Disaster and Emergency Services said. Officials shut down drinking water intakes downstream while they evaluated the danger after the 6 a.m. accident. An Associated Press reporter witnessed a yellow substance coming out of some of the tank cars.

 

David Stamey, the county's chief of emergency services, said there was no immediate danger for the crews working at the site, and the hazardous material was being diluted by the swollen river. There were three asphalt cars and four sulfur cars in the river.

 

The train crew was safe and no injuries were reported, Montana Rail Link spokesman Andy Garland said in a statement. The asphalt and sulfur both solidify quickly when exposed to cooler temperatures, he said.

 

Railroad crews were at the scene in Stillwater County, near the town of Columbus, about 40 miles (about 64 kilometers) west of Billings. The area is in a sparsely populated section of the Yellowstone River Valley, surrounded by ranch and farmland. The river there flows away from Yellowstone National Park, which is about 110 miles (177 kilometers) southwest.

 

"We are committed to addressing any potential impacts to the area as a result of this incident and working to understand the reasons behind the accident," Garland said.

 

The bridge collapse also took out a fiber-optic cable providing internet service to many customers in the state, the high-speed provider Global Net said.

 group of fishermen experienced a terrifying moment after one of them was pulled into the water by a shark that latched onto his hand.

 

The man was bitten on the hand Friday morning by a shark at Everglades National Park.

 

Local 10 News viewer Michael Russo sent video that showed the shark latching onto the hand of the fisherman and then dragging him in the water.

Horror as Thai gardener 'bleeds to death after cutting off his penis with a garden strimmer'

 

A Thai gardener has reportedly bled to death in a freak-accident after slicing his penis off with a grass strimmer.

 

Praditsin Chuypad was found dead with his trousers and legs soaked in blood in a forest park in northeastern Thailand. 

 

The 39-year-old had been tending to a patch of grass when the strimmer's blade flew off and severed his penis, causing severe blood loss, according to Thaiger. 

 

Officers discovered Praditsin's body on Wednesday, in the Isaan province of Nong Bua Lamphu.

Sanford woman nearly dies from flesh-eating bacteria after pulling hangnail

 

When Tammy Russ cut her thumb removing an ingrown hangnail, little did she know that she would nearly lose her life 24 hours later from a rare flesh-eating bacteria.

 

But thanks to the team at Central Carolina Hospital, she is alive and well today.

 

On June 7, Tammy’s thumb began swelling. Her daughter, Amber McDaniel, said her mother became so weak that she couldn't stand up.

 

After going to an urgent care center, they were unable to diagnose the problem.

 

An ambulance took her to the hospital where Dr. Joy Hallmark identified the problem.

 

Dr. Hallmark recently wrote a 12-page paper on the condition called necrotizing fasciitis, which is exactly what she ended up having.

 

Tammy had to undergo emergency surgery. Her thumb ended up being amputated.

 

“There was a 24-hour window, and we could have lost her,” her daughter said.

 

The hospital said Tammy's necrotizing fasciitis may have developed from group A Strep bacteria. There are only 700 to 1,200 such cases each year in the United States. Up to one in three people die from the infection.

 

Tammy’s husband, Kevin, was equally grateful when recalling the care his wife and family received.

 

“The staff ran into a textbook worst-case-scenario that not many people know how to care for," he said. "Everyone worked as fast as humanly possible. Those folks came through above and beyond. My wife would not be here living and breathing, if they were not as good as they are at what they do."

Videos of unconscious boys' rapes found on phone left at restaurant, police say

 

Videos of the rapes of 10 unconscious boys were found on the cellphone of a Tennessee soccer coach after he left it behind at a restaurant, police said Sunday.

 

Camilo Hurtado Campos, 56, was booked on allegations of child rape and sexual exploitation of a minor, the Franklin Police Department said in a statement.

 

Police described Campos as a popular soccer coach and a 20-year resident of Franklin, a city of about 87,000 people 20 miles south of Nashville. He used the job to lure boys to his home, where he allegedly attacked them, police said.

 

"During off-hours, Campos frequented nearby school playgrounds in both neighborhoods [where he had lived] where he approached kids and recruited them as players on his team," police said. "After gaining their trust, Campos invited many of the kids to his home where he drugged and then raped them."

 

The allegations came to light after workers at a restaurant found a cellphone someone left behind and were able to search through it in an attempt to contact its owner, police said.

 

They discovered "unconscionable videos," the police department said, and contacted police, who traced it to the suspect.

 

Detectives combing through videos and photos on the phone saw 10 victims, two of whom have been identified with the help of local schools, the police department said.

 

There are hundreds of videos and photos on the device, however, and it's feared there are additional victims, police said. So far, the victims are described as appearing to be between the ages of 9 and 17, the department said.

America is the shark attack capital of the world with 72% of the world's total... but which state has the most?

 

As the summer heats up, the United States continues to lead the number of shark attacks in the world.

 

Last year, the country saw 41 of 57 confirmed cases worldwide, which is a shocking 72 percent of the world's total for 2022, according to the International Shark Attack File (ISAF).

 

More specifically, Florida is by far the shark capital of the world, registering 16 unprovoked nonlethal bites last year - the most attacks of any other state or any single place, for that matter. 

 

The state's Volusia County, known as a shark hot spot, saw 44 percent of the total attacks.

 

New York saw the next most attacks last year, with eight total. Hawaii was next, with five total bites, one of which was fatal.

The police are searching for clues after a man's decapitated body was found in a Japanese love hotel

 

A man's headless body was found in a love hotel in Japan. He was last seen alive while entering the building with a person dressed in women's clothing.

 

The man, identified by police as Hitoshi Ura, was found dead in a love hotel on July 2, according to local newspaper The Japan Times. The incident occurred in Sapporo, on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.

 

On Sunday, near the love hotel, police officers approached pedestrians in search of evidence that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrator, according to the Japanese newspaper The Asahi Shimbun.

 

Ura, 64, was seen entering the hotel with another person at 10:50 p.m. on July 1, the receptionist told police, according to The Asahi Shimbun.

 

Some three hours later, the receptionist was told that the person would be leaving the hotel first and that Ura would be left alone in the room, per The Asahi Shimbun. The report did not state if Ura was the one who informed the receptionist.

 

The following day, police found Ura naked in the bathroom of a guest room, where he was said to have been decapitated, The Japan Times reported, citing investigators. Police said the cause of death was hemorrhagic shock, per the report.

 

According to The Asahi Shimbun, the person who accompanied Ura into the love hotel was small in size. The person was seen wearing a wide-brimmed black hat, dark clothing, and carrying a large suitcase.

Dolphins bite and ram swimmers in a spate of beach attacks in Japan

 

Dolphins have been biting and ramming swimmers in a spate of beach attacks in central Japan.

 

Four swimmers were injured in the attacks on Sunday, according to officials.

 

One man in his 60s suffered broken ribs as well as bites to his hands after a dolphin rammed into him on the shoreline at Suishohama beach in the town of Mihama, Fukui prefecture, early on Sunday.

 

The man was swimming around five metres from the shore with a friend when the dolphin lunged, according to local police.

 

In a separate incident the same morning, another man in his 40s sustained bites to his arm on the beach, which is known as a family-friendly spot and popular with tourists.

 

Two more people were injured by the mammals later in the day.

6-foot ‘doomsday fish’ said to be harbinger of natural disasters, seen in waters near Taiwan

 

A deep-sea diver said he had an encounter with a 6-foot “doomsday” fish off the waters of Taiwan recently.

 

The fish, called an oarfish, was found with what appeared to be large bite marks on its body, according to ABC7.com.

 

Oarfish generally live at depths of around 656 feet, according to iflscience.com. Diving instructor Wang Cheng-ru, who captured the footage of the fish, said he believed the animal may have come to the surface to die.

Texas man, 35, has both hands and parts of his feet amputated after catching typhus from a FLEA and nearly dying from septic shock, gangrene and organ failure

 

A Texas man has had both his hands and parts of his feet amputated after catching typhus from a flea.

 

Michael Kohlhof from Houston was visiting his mother in hospital in San Antonio when he fell ill on June 19 - with what his family suspected was the flu.

 

The 35-year-old was immediately rushed to the ICU suffering from sepsis and organ failure that was so severe his family was told he would likely die.

 

'He almost died once or twice,' said his brother, Greg Kohlhof. 'They were worried about him being brain dead.'

 

Kohlhof did not show any abnormal symptoms in the weeks leading up to his diagnosis, although he felt tired.

 

Symptoms of typhus include fever and chills, body aches and muscle pain, loss of appetite, and vomiting, according to the CDC.

 

'Untreated, typhus can cause severe illness and damage to one or more organs, including the liver, kidneys, heart, lungs, and brain,' the CDC says.

 

Greg told KENS5 that Michael was fortunate to be visiting his mother at the time. 'With his symptoms being so general, I don't know if he would have went to the doctor. He would have probably just tried to sleep it off.'

 

J'Lenne Hardaway, Kohlhof's mother, said doctors told them this type of flea is only found in California and Texas.

 

They said he was 'the victim of a severe and traumatic bite from one single flea — with unimaginable consequences,' she said on a GoFundMe page.

 

Her son did not have health insurance, and she is now fundraising to help him. 'If it were 48 hours later, he would have not made it,' she said.

Day Spa Investigated Over Deadly Outbreak of Legionnaires’ Disease

 

A day spa in Northern California might be the source of a deadly outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease. Over the weekend, local health officials reported three cases of the bacterial illness, including two deaths, among recent customers of the Zen Day Spa in Richmond. The spa has now been closed down while officials investigate.

 

Legionnaires’ disease is a form of pneumonia (lung inflammation) caused by Legionella bacteria. These bacteria are ubiquitously found in freshwater environments, but it takes certain circumstances for them to make us sick. They sometimes find their way inside central air conditioning systems or other man-made water systems, including hot tubs. Once inside, the bacteria can multiply en masse and become aerosolized, spreading through the air in small droplets that are inhaled by their victims. People can also catch the infection by swallowing contaminated water that accidentally goes down the wrong pipe and reaches the lungs.

 

The Contra Costa Health Department reported the suspected outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease this past Saturday after being notified of the two deaths on Thursday and Friday. In both cases, the victims had become sick just days after they visited the Zen Day Spa. Officials also learned of a third possible case who contracted the infection soon after using the spa’s jacuzzi tub in June, though this person eventually recovered.

Italian man crushed to death by falling cheese wheels

 

The owner of a dairy factory near Bergamo in northern Italy has died when shelves carrying 25,000 wheels of cheese collapsed and buried him.

 

 

All night, rescue workers tried to save Giacomo Chiapparini, 74, from under the masses of hard Grana Padano cheese, each wheel weighing 40kg (88lb).

 

But help came too late for the cheesemaker, who was confirmed dead, a spokesman for the Bergamo fire brigade said on Monday morning after a 12-hour operation.

Officials in Hawaii say 36 people are now confirmed dead in the devastating wildfires that have decimated entire towns, including historic Lahaina.

Florida officials report five deaths from ‘flesh-eating’ bacteria in Tampa Bay since January

 

Five people are confirmed dead in the Tampa Bay area because of a flesh-eating bacterium known to lurk at beaches, Florida officials reported.

 

According to Florida Health, the vibrio vulnificus bacterium’s natural habitat is in warm, brackish seawater because it requires salt to live.

 

The bacteria typically grow more quickly in warmer months. 

 

Infections are rare, but health officials say those with open wounds, cuts or scrapes should stay out of the water. 

 

Five people have died this year from reported bacterial infections, including two in Hilllsborough County and one each in Pasco, Polk and Sarasota counties.

 

There have been 26 reported cases of vibrio vulnificus infections in Florida since January, officials said.
