Strong quake prompts tsunami warning for Japan's western coast

Japan was rocked Monday by a powerful earthquake measuring a 7 on Japan’s shindo scale — the strongest rating — prompting tsunami warnings for the length of the country's western coast and inflicting widespread damage.

Tsunami waves were recorded in some areas following the magnitude 7.6 quake, which struck near Ishikawa Prefecture’s Noto Peninsula at around 4:10 p.m. It was followed by several strong aftershocks.

At least five people have died while others were trapped in collapsed buildings. A large-scale fire also broke out in in Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture, following the quake, while several other municipalities reported collapsed houses.

Several injuries were reported, including two women who were taken to hospitals after falling or being hit by falling objects in Awara, Fukui Prefecture, local authorities said. A woman in her 80s in Itoigawa, Niigata Prefecture, fell while evacuating and suffered a head injury.

In Ishikawa, approximately 32,500 homes lost power.

Meanwhile, on the otherwise side on the ocean…

Five earthquakes were recorded within a 9-hour timeframe Monday morning throughout California’s coastline.

According to the USGS website, the earthquakes were all between 2.5 and 4.1 magnitude and started around 12:17 a.m. in Boonville.

These come just hours after Japan was hit with over a dozen earthquakes that triggered tsunami warnings, with the largest recorded with a 7.6 magnitude that started fires and brought down several buildings.

Hawaiian Surfer Dies After Shark Attack off Maui Coast

A 39-year-old surfer suffered a fatal shark bite off the Maui coast on Saturday morning, local officials said. The incident was the only deadly encounter of the seven that Hawaii reported in 2023, and the second fatal attack of the year in the United States, according to trackingsharks.com. Officials with the Department of Land and Natural Resources said the encounter took place a little after 11 a.m., noting that the coastline was lined with shark warning signs for a mile in both directions. First responders brought the victim to shore on a Jet Ski, according to a police press release; he later died from his wounds in the hospital.

Johnson County church elder charged for child sex crimes committed at work

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Bargersville man and “church elder” for child sex crimes after he allegedly spoke to a detective pretending to be a 14-year-old girl.

Nicholas P. Jackson, 39, was arrested on Dec. 15, 2023, at his place of employment, a church in New Whiteland near 560 E. Tracy Rd., on the following charges:

  • Child Solicitation, a Level 4 Felony;
  • Possession of Child Pornography, a Level 5 Felony;
  • Dissemination of Harmful Matter to Minor (Attempt), a Level 6 Felony.

According to court documents, on multiple occasions from Nov. 28, 2023, through Dec. 15, 2023, Jackson contacted an undercover agent that he believed was a 14-year-old white female. The agent identified their age as 14 multiple times.

He met the undercover agent on an app, in a local chatroom called Bargersville Friends.

Jackson introduced himself to the agent as “Nick from Bargersville, happily married, two children. Work at a local church, and a Seminary student!” At this time, Jackson inquired about her age, and the officer spoke about how she was “almost 15.” Jackson said, “You can be the little sister I never had… lol.”

He said, “…For some reason, I’m attracted to younger girls.” He later requested to see a photograph of the minor nude. Jackson also sent videos to the girl in the chatroom of himself performing sexual acts in church.

He also asked the girl, “How old is ur mom, I bet we are the same age! LOL. Age. That would be wild if her and I went to high school together! Lol.”

During the investigation, officers also learned Jackson was a substitute teacher.

The court documents also reference how Jackson went by the girl’s home. Surveillance corroborated what he said in the chatroom, as a video of a 2013 Toyota Prius registered to Jackson showed his parked car at the complex.

“I literally just drove by your apartment. There were first-floor apartments in second-story apartments with balconies and I parked by the pool. I got nervous and left I was there about 10 minutes ago.” Jackson said he was depositing money at a bank for the church mission when he stopped at the minor’s home.

It is kinda worrying that people think they are going to get away with stuff like this. Like, what percentage of these creeps are we actually catching? How many times have they done this and not been caught? How many men are pedophiles? I think it is probably a larger percentage than we’d like to admit.

also, 2013 Prius 😬

Cancer Is Striking More Young People, and Doctors Are Alarmed and Baffled

Meilin Keen was studying for the bar exam and preparing to move to New York City last June when she started throwing up blood.

Keen, 27 years old, learned days later that she has gastric cancer. She postponed the bar exam. Brain fog from chemotherapy made it hard to do her legal work.

Surgeons removed her stomach in December. Keen is coming to terms with all that means for her diet, her health, even her dating life. “That’s a fun icebreaker: I don’t have a stomach anymore,” she said.

Cancer is hitting more young people in the U.S. and around the globe, baffling doctors. Diagnosis rates in the U.S. rose in 2019 to 107.8 cases per 100,000 people under 50, up 12.8% from 95.6 in 2000, federal data show. A study in BMJ Oncology last year reported a sharp global rise in cancers in people under 50, with the highest rates in North America, Australia and Western Europe.

Doctors are racing to figure out what is making them sick, and how to identify young people who are at high risk. They suspect that changes in the way we live—less physical activity, more ultra-processed foods, new toxins—have raised the risk for younger generations.

Local DJ 'Slick Rick' Discovered Decapitated in Memphis

Popular Memphis DJ Ricky Buchanan was found beheaded inside his home in the Berclair area this week. He was well-known by his stage name, "Slick Rick."

(Buchanan is not affiliated with the famous rapper Slick Rick, whose real name is Richard Martin Lloyd Walters.)

Rick's brother, John Buchanan, was the one who discovered his decapitated body around 2:30 in the afternoon on Wednesday, Jan. 24, FOX13 reports.

"I walked in and found him, and I just called 911. It was terrible," John told the news outlet, adding that he initially didn't realize his brother's body had been decapitated.

"I thought his coat was up over his head like it was cold or something," he recounted. "I ran out and then I ran back in. And then I realized it wasn't that. It was something worse."

John also described a series of "weird" circumstances at the home, including that he found his brother's dog, Lucky, still in the yard.

"A lot of things were weird," John explained. "He had his keys still in his hand. His pants were pulled down to his feet and the back door was wide open, so that's the weird stuff."

Danger in the water: Fatal attacks, bites from sharks rose in 2023. Surfers bitten the most.

It has been 50 years this month since Peter Benchley's novel "Jaws" hit the bookshelves, spawning the blockbuster movie of the same name.

It remains a classic, but its famous villain isn't keeping people away from the beach. Shark bites and fatal shark attacks increased worldwide last year, according to the University of Florida’s International Shark Attack File.

Sixty-nine unprovoked shark bites were reported last year, up six over the five-year average, reported the shark attack file, which investigates shark bites globally.

The bites are still within the normal range, said Gavin Naylor, director of the Florida Museum of Natural History’s shark research program. But the fatalities "are a bit unnerving this year."

Worldwide there were 14 confirmed shark-related fatalities last year, including 10 classified as unprovoked, double the number from the year before. Two of those were in the United States.

As always, the United States led in unprovoked bites with 36. Though the 16 bites in Florida were slightly below average, the state still led the nation in shark bites, but that's never a surprise because of the state's extended coastline and tourism industry, Naylor said.

Surfers suffered 42% of the bites worldwide, and swimmers and waders were a close second at 39%.

Army of sex-crazed macaques terrorise city – but annual monkey buffet could be to blame

Rampaging macaques are running riot in a city where an annual Monkey Buffet Festival has helped strengthen their army.

Sugary drinks and snacks have made the monkeys more hyper-sexual and prone to aggressive behaviour. And now they have almost total control of the streets of Lopburi, Thailand, where business owners have shut up shop and locals have fled after being terrorised by the beasts.

0_Two-monkeys-drinking-softdrinks-during

Once a tourist hotspot, the wild macaques would draw in thousands, so much so that an annual Monkey Buffet Festival was introduced at the Phra Prang Sam Yot temple in 1989, where holidaymakers could watch the monkey madness as the animals gorged themselves on fruit.

While the event aimed to boost the economy and honour the traditional Lopburi belief that monkeys are disciples of Jao Paw Phra Kan - a spirit which protects the city - it led to an explosion in their population.

Problems began in the so-called 'Monkey Province' when the Covid-19 pandemic put a stop to the festival which would involve the animals filling themselves with two tonnes of fruit and vegetables in front of 100,000 spectators.

They were then left without their usual sources of food and started attacking locals who fed them junk food to keep them away. But the plan backfired as it made them even more violent. They now even steal from cars.

"Sugary foods can increase the productivity of the monkeys and stimulate the monkeys to reproduce more," said Suttipong Kamtaptim from the Department of National Parks.

They spoke out after shocking scenes emerged earlier this month of 3,500 monkeys descending on the city where shops are boarded up and humans now dare not venture.

Hotel warns guests not to take a shower due to Legionnaires’ concerns at building

The Renaissance Newark Airport Hotel is warning guests at the check-in desk not to take showers at the hotel because of ongoing water testing after two guests last year were diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease, a serious form of pneumonia.

In a letter handed to guests when they check in, the hotel says it is working with health officials to chemically treat and permanently disinfect the hotel’s water system “to kill any remaining Legionella and prevent more from growing.”

The Department of Health previously said an investigation into Legionnaires’ disease at a hotel near Newark Airport was started in the fall of 2023, but it didn’t name the specific hotel. The most recent case was in August 2023 and no additional cases associated with stays at the hotel have been reported, it said.

When a reporter booked a room on Tuesday using the hotel’s official website there was no mention of the issue and no warning in the reservation confirmations sent via text and email.

The owner of the Marriott-branded Renaissance Newark Airport Hotel, MCR, which on its website calls itself the third largest hotel owner-operator in the United States, did not respond to requests for comment.

Video Captures Cargo Ship Ramming Bridge Before Fatal Collapse

Footage circulating on Chinese social media websites has captured the moment a cargo ship in southern China caused a bridge to collapse, sending vehicles tumbling into the water below as well as onto the vessel itself.

Authorities in the Nansha district of Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province, said the empty cargo ship struck a pillar of the Lixinsha Bridge at around 5:30 a.m. local time on Thursday, destroying a section of the bridge.

Four vehicles and one electric scooter were involved in the incident, according to a statement released by the local government. Two vehicles fell into the water, and three landed on the ship.

As of 10 a.m. local time, two people were confirmed dead, two had been rescued and three were unaccounted for, the district government said. One crew member was injured.

I watched a doc about how it started and how it was named...from a hotel in Philly during a convention.  It was a busted air conditioning unit that caused the air particles to disperse.

So, throwing your junk on the cheap ones is preferred.
