Track record is all that matters here. The hits aren't causing the suspensions in and of themselves, the repeat nature of the offenses are.  Merriweather would still be playing if this weren't the 6th time he'd gotten clipped for it.  Got nothing really to do with how bad a hit it was.

But I don't disagree that a fine should be coming down for Swearinger.

Agree.  The reason I brought it up is that the Swearinger hit actually is much more aggregious, and all that crap Troy Vincent was spewing is much more applicable to that hit, rather than the one Merriweather put on.

I'd have to go back and look again (even though I looked over and over), and I just think that Merriweather was trying to do the right thing, leading with his shoulder.  The problem is that he was going low and dropped his head.  He can't do that.

Anyway, it is what it is.  The Swearinger hit looked dirty, and looked like it was intent to injure.  The Merriweather hit looked like it was more bad technique, and like he was trying to do the right thing but just didn't get it all the way.

I did like the fact that Peyton decided to get up in his grill about it AFTER throwing a 40+ yard TD.  That was just a little old-school.

The other takeaway from that game is the the Texans can be had deep.  They were pretty good defending the short stuff, but Peyton started bombing them, and they had no answers.

The Dustin Keller hit was entirely within the rules though. So he has a rep for following the rules?

He has a rep for taking out a knee.

Uhhh, no. Just watched the Swearinger hit and it was shoulder pad into Welker's helmet. Defenseless receiver, sure, but not helmet to helmet contact. Merriweather's hit was helmet to helmet, and it never matters if it is inadvertent or not. Merriweather's crown made the contact... other than the fact he DIDN'T launch himself, it was textbook helmet to helmet.

Long as it's shoulder pad to helmet then. Carry on.

The state of Maryland and PG County, I believe.

Really?  I thought it was an internal Redskins thing.  There is a corporate that owns the stadium, and another corporation that owns the team, and the team pays the stadium a leasing fee.  I thought it was mostly for tax/financing reasons, even though Snyder (and his partners) own both companies.

I thought, and I could be massively wrong about this (and probably am) that the concept of a lease is that you pay rent to the owner of the facility for some period of time.  So, I'm not sure how MD and PG County could be involved.

This has always been confusing to me.

Maybe it was part of the deal for MD to kick in some money for the infrastructure? I don't know. I thought the team ran the whole thing.

Thought I heard 2027. So we still have another 13 years at FedEx.

Sounds about right.  It takes forever for new stadiums to be approved, built, planned for, argued over by politicians, voted on for funds.  Add in that Congress would have to approve the stadium as well...and it'll take awhile to happen.

You know what... I totally disagree with him, but I LOVE LOVE Clark continually defending Merriweather.

I thought at first signing this was a farewell tour and transition year to the booth for Clark. I'm all in on him now for being team player. I know his history here, but that doesn't buy you committment in your mid 30's.

Thanks RC, I got your back bro. Hope you ball out this year

Amen to that.  Merriweather gives us a "presence" on the field at S, as does RC of course.  Can't wait to have these two back there on a regular basis.

@TarikCSN: Was told safety Phillip Thomas is not here in Tampa. Preliminary indication is that his foot injury is not serious. #RedskinsTalk

Good news; thanks.

Getting on a plane back to DC, I'm expecting major Redskins cuts to be made by the time I land. Tough morning for Jay Gruden and company

That's kinda what I thought, but I really don't know.  I just recall reading that Maryland had some say in the matter.   MD kicked in like $70mil for infrastructure and miscellaneous whatnot.  Or maybe the team owns the actual building, but MD or PG County owns the land on which it's built?

I'm trying to find more specific details though, but I'm coming up empty.

#Redskins 24, Bucs 10: Ten Observations... http://es.pn/1C8sydB

I just don't see how you can try and put Lache Seastrunk on the practice squad. There are times he overestimates his speed, with quick reversal-of-fields. That could get him in trouble, but he has speed to turn the corner, a speed no one else in the backfield can match.

Chris Thompson could be placed on the practice squad. Durability remains an issue. That hasn't changed. He showed quickness Thursday, but with him it's not about one game. And I'm not sure he showed enough when he did play to bump Seastrunk.

Evan Royster has improved on special teams and perhaps that gives him an edge over the young backs. But he's not so good that it should be an absolute deciding factor. I've followed Royster since his Westfield High School days. But the other backs have been more dynamic. They need, and want, that.

If Gabe Miller and Everette Brown were even entering this game, then Miller had to surge ahead. Miller does have practice squad experience, but he outplayed Brown Thursday. Miller made a very nice tackle for a loss when he took on the pulling guard, by going low and allowing him to spin off. Next play, he recognized the draw and made a tackle on third and long. He also showed good recognition on a bootleg to his side and that resulted in the sack/fumble and subsequent recovery.

Wrote this earlier, but if anything happens to DeSean Jackson or Andre Roberts, who is your speed receiver? Has to be Aldrick Robinson. That's why I'd keep him. Besides, he was better this summer than Nick Williams. Just because some are tired of Robinson doesn't mean he should be cut.

I love everything about Ryan Grant's game. He's so even keeled, too, that he comes across like a veteran in interviews. An underrated part is how well he catches the ball at its highest point and uses strong hands. He runs such good routes and creates extra yards of separation because of it -- whether it's his ability to come back to the ball, drive a defender off or maintain the right spacing to the sidelines, giving the quarterback a little more room to throw.

Washington Redskins' projected roster: Examining the Washington Redskins' roster:

RUNNING BACKS (5)

This is, by far, the hardest one to determine. They really like Thompson, but his durability is a major issue. One night hasn't changed that and they could probably sneak him onto the practice squad. I don't see how you can cut Seastrunk after Thursday, not when he reminded all of his speed (they did not need reminders). The biggest question to me is whether they keep Silas Redd or Royster. The latter offers veteran insurance, but Redd ran with a lot of power and shiftiness in open field. Royster can help on special teams, though he is not exactly a stud here. Redd has the toughness that you could use, but he, too, lacks speed. Also, his damage was done against backups. Neither Redd nor Seastrunk is strong in pass protection, but the latter offers speed and that is a desired trait. I could see them going with only four in order to keep another player on defense.

CORNERBACKS (5)

Nothing changes here. Chase Minnifield has practice squad eligibility and my guess is they will try to put him there. The coaches expanded Minnifield's role, working him at safety a little this summer. But it would still take a lot to get him on the roster. Otherwise, these are the same five that have been on this list all summer.

SPECIALISTS (3)

Never liked this kicking competition and Zach Hocker made it a tougher call by missing a 39-yarder against Tampa Bay. Forbath's kickoffs remain inconsistent, but he has been solid as a placekicker. If I'm the Redskins, I'm still looking for a punter. Neither Malone nor Tress Way are consistent.

Worst 2 days of the job for me. Having been laid off before, I hate having to hit up guys asking them if their dreams just got shattered.

While this is an exciting time to see what the team is going to look like, it is also somewhat bizarre that we are talking openly about people who are going to lose their job, their income, their health insurance, and be on the street looking for work.  Many of whom don't have a specialty in anything else.

It's tough.
