Caps '10-'11 Thread Part II [CLOSED]

Started this because the other thread is suffering from severe technical difficulties posting. I've been unable to post there for a while, maybe it's suffering the same ailment as the first NBA Playoffs Thread.

Anyway, looks like Brooks Laich may be moving on to bigger bucks this offseason.

http://www.japersrink.com/2011/6/15/2226463/new-fanpoll-how-much-will-brooks-laich-make-next-year

At the money he'll be wanting, it's best to let him move on anyway.

Two free agents I would want: Ville Leino and Michael Kopecky.

That thread was getting cluttered as it was. It's better to have one devoted to the offseason. Theres too many bad memories in that thread.

ESPN had an article last month about some trade possibilities for us. Basically they're saying that our best option is to deal Mike Green.

The NHL Experts blog is a collaboration of voices from around and inside the game of hockey. With viewpoints ranging from the press box to the front office, the Experts blog will offer unique perspectives through the playoffs to keep readers informed of significant storylines in all aspects of the game.

The offseason begins the moment a team is eliminated, and for the Washington Capitals, that moment came much too soon. Alex Ovechkin's disappointment was deep, and he looked into changing his offseason training program as a means of ensuring a better playoff result next year. I don't think Alex needs to make drastic changes to his training program, nor do I think the Caps have to make drastic changes to their roster. What they do need to do is clearly assess their team and make changes that will get them on the path to winning the Stanley Cup.

There are always plenty of trade ideas being thrown around, but I want to focus on ones that address needs and also involve a likely trading partner, all while keeping an eye on salary cap dynamics. With these parameters in place, here are a few trade possibilities for the Caps:

Washington has an embarrassment of riches at the goaltending position. Seeing as how three goalies can't be part of a roster, and Michal Neuvirth, Semyon Varlamov and Braden Holtby are all more than capable, the Caps should look to make a deal. One potential trading partner is the Philadelphia Flyers. Scott Hartnell is a rugged winger who would make Washington harder to play against, and perhaps expanding the trade to include defensemen -- Jeff Schultz for Braydon Coburn, perhaps? -- could benefit both teams.

A big, excellent-skating defenseman like Coburn would help the Caps. Schultz is a steady blueliner who could add a little salary cap relief to the Flyers.

Washington acquired Jason Arnott to fill the hole at the second line center position, but with Arnott's pending unrestricted free agent status, this gap may open again.

It's a great thing for a team to be able to address two needs at once; both the actual position and add some winning experience. When I was the GM of the Calgary Flames, I looked to do this and found a fit with the Colorado Avalanche, trading Derek Morris for Chris Drury and Stephane Yelle.

I think the Caps might be able to work a deal like this with the Detroit Red Wings. Valtteri Filppula is the guy they should target, as he would fit in nicely with Nicklas Backstrom and Marcus Johansson down the middle. Washington could offer Mike Green, who would be a nice addition to the aging Detroit defense. With John Carlson looking more and more confident in his play, and prospect Dmitri Orlov getting ready to push for a spot in the lineup, Green may be expendable for the right player -- and Filppula fits for a lot of reasons. Looking ahead to free agency, Jonathan Ericsson could be a target of Washington's as well.

The Dallas Stars are another team that could have interest in Green, as they've been looking for a replacement for Sergei Zubov. Washington might want to look to swap Green for Brenden Morrow or Mark Fistric, a hard-nosed defenseman who would make the front of the Caps' net a very unpleasant place for opponents.

Looking north of the border, the Flames are in something of a transition and Green, who hails from Calgary, could be a catalyst for some offense from the blue line. The Flames have a big, strong defenseman in Robyn Regehr who terrorizes opponents and would be a nice addition to the Capitals' roster. Perhaps talk of trading a young western Canadian prospect like Cody Eakin could open up possibilities to discuss players such as Rene Bourque or David Moss, who would add skating, scoring and size to the Washington lineup.

And finally here's an idea for a blockbuster deal -- albeit one that may be a little fanciful. Trade one of the young goalies, Green and Alexander Semin to the Anaheim Ducks for Francois Beauchemin -- who fits the definition of the rugged defenseman with Stanley Cup winning experience -- and Bobby Ryan. How would Ryan, Backstrom and Ovechkin look together?

Some of these trade proposals might seem like stretches, but if the Capitals want to improve to a championship-caliber level, they are going to have to be bold in their attempts to upgrade their roster.

I would LOVE for that ANA or Philly deal to go down....

That being said, this team needs some snarl. I'd welcome a guy like Hartnell in an instant. Looking at Boston's team, they had the right mix of pests, 2-way players, snarl, and skill. Skill isn't the problem with this caps team....it's the other areas such as being tough in our own end *cough* Schultz, not having a TRUE power forward, amongst other things where we lack. I'd happily send Semin off this year, especially since he's got a huge pay day looming. I'm not as down on Green as many people are, and he did show improvement this season when he was healthy. However, I'm not opposed to trading him if a good return can be had. Carlson started to wear down a bit towards the end of the season, and I think this year we'll see him make a big improvement and be around 50 points. He's the sole reason why Green is expendable. Well, it's going to be interesting to see what GMGM does...you gotta think that that his job is on the line this season.

*Raffi Torres anyone?

To comment on the link to the Brooks Laich salary story... among the many comments are people speculating he might consider going to Pittsburgh.

If he goes to pittsburgh, I will burn my ****ing jersey... including the winter classic one.

The Capitals talent is overrated. The problem is we are weak down the middle, too weak.

Backstrom

Arnott

Johannson

as your top 3 wasn't going to cut it, especially when Backstrom wasn't even really playing.

Bruins had

Krejci

Bergeron

Peverley

Bruins were stronger down the middle, stronger on defense and obviously stronger in net. The Capitals had superior wings but centers are more crucial to a championship because of faceoffs and defensive responsibility.

The Capitals indeed need some attitude on this team, still need more grit and need to improve their bottom 6 while improving down the middle. What better way than to cheat some team into taking Alexander Semin for some depth. Laich is probably not going to be on this team next year and my ideal replacement would be Ville Leino who probably won't command quite as much money. 50 point producer, plays both ways, brings grit. Philly absolutely stole him.

My dream is Brad Richards but we cannot afford him without moving a couple players and it'd still be too expensive probably.

But bottom line, more depth, better at center, improve the defense. Jeff Schultz is not a top 6 defenseman on a Stanley Cup winning team.

If the right trade of equal value for Semin comes up, do not hesitate to pull the trigger GMGM.

we should really see what we have with Green AND Wideman playing on the team before we start talking about shipping one away.

I disagree, I'm done with Green. Imo he's never going to be an impact performer in the playoffs. Sticks I agree 100% with your assessment. Anything we can do to get some value out of Green and Semin, strengthen ourselves up the middle and on the blue and improve grit and depth I'm all for.

Yep. If we learned anything from Larry Murphy, let Green go win his Stanley Cups somewhere else, we're better off. At least after he wins his 2nd one, he'll take his day with the Cup through D.C. /realtalk

crazy sarcasm

I agree with this. One line with Green, one with Wideman, and the other being Carlson/Alzner is very strong, regardless of who the other 2 guys are.

its really too bad about Fehr, cause he had just started to show his potential and then he injured that shoulder (I believe the initial injury was a result of missing a check and ramming into the boards). Once you injure that shoulder, it'll never be good as new. You'll always be a risk for reinjury.

And Fehr could be expendable considering his right shoulder is yet again going to ****.

You aren't going to move both, as exciting as having nobody signed on the right would be.

Yep, and it's not his fault he got Steckel'd. That guy was a one man wrecking crew this year :ols:.

here's my thoughts, with the new found cap space, we need to think about getting a new batch of role players. Not sure who to target, but I'm sure GMGM will find something.

Scottie Upshall, Max Talbot, Chad LaRose...LaRose will take a discount to stay with Carolina in my opinion, and Upshall will command a decent salary.

EDIT: and of course they need to address center ice.

They were just in succession is all.

Ah. Well, I advocate moving Semin for the right deal. I'm not in favor of trading Green. Fehr, I really hope he heals right.

Any of these guys are upgrades.

assuming you mean the Center position, I'm cautiously optimistic. I think Marcus Johansson has grown into a legit 2nd line center. 4th line, I'm happy with Gordo back there. he's an elite faceoff man and sound defensively. 3rd line is a little bit of a question mark, however. Maybe newly acquired Mattias Sjogren or Cody Eakin will be of use back there. I think there were a dozen other teams trying to sign Sjogren, so maybe he's ready for the NHL. Marcus Johansson should probably help him make the transition.
