I was on this other forum, and there was a 50 page thread about this problem. A majority of the people picked the IMO the wrong answer. For the record, I think the answer is 288.

Depends on how you do it, you can either get 288 or 2.

Method 1: 48/2(9+3)=? 48/2(12) --> 48/24=2

or

Method 2: 48/2(9+3)=? 48/2(12) --> 24(12)=288

Depends on whether you multiply before you divide (PMDAS method) or if multiplication and division are done at the same time, just left to right. As for my answer? I'm not sure which is correct, but I was always taught the 1st way, so when I did it the first time I got 2. If I'm wrong, at least I admit it.

The nice thing about math is that there are no gray areas, only right or wrong.

In the equation shown, the order of operation is:

First: Perform operations inside of parenthesis (ie: (9+3) = 12)

Second: Perform operations on same side of mathematical sign (ie. 2x(12) = 24)

Third: Perform mathematical operation (48 / 24) = 2

It's 288.

Order of operations.

48 ÷ 2 (9+3)

Parentheses first = 12.

Then it's Multiplication/Division from left to right, whichever comes first.

48 ÷ 2 = 24

24x12 = 288

Yep, it's 288.

Many people assume that since Multiplication comes before Division in PEMDAS, that it has a higher priority. In actuality they have the same rank and order is determined from left to right.

i read it as this:

48/2(9+3)

so you would first get the bottom number which would then equal 48/24 = 2

You would be correct in assuming this IF the "bottom part" was in parentheses. Meaning it looked like this 48/(2(9+3)). But in this case, you do the division first due to the lack of parentheses.
