The Official Washington Basketball Thread: Wizards, Mystics etc

Durant signing here would make others want to join him. The Wizards may not attract most free agents now, but the Wizards with Durant would not be just another team. Signing Durant would change the landscape for the next several years, not just this free agency period.

There are other things to consider. How good can Beal be if he's the third option to handle the ball and second shooting option? He might be amazing in that role. There is also the possibility of trades that change everything. Imagine if the nets sent us Brook Lopez for Gortat and Beal. I'm not advocating that trade, or even saying it's possible, but simply showing how an ambitious move could alter the team in unexpected ways. We've seen teams dramatically change course after attracting stars before.

Point is that if Durant does sign here, don't assume that the Wizards are stuck pinning their hopes to any one player. The longest shot in all of this is Durant signing here at all.

I looked at Rip Hamilton's advanced stats, he had low PERs too. I'm liking the comparison it's Beal. A great offensive option that is just shy of being a great player. Beal even runs the same kind of plays where he runs throws screens to get the ball in motion leading to a shot.

If Beal's durability is never going to improve, how essential can he be to this team's future when availability will always be an issue? Superstar players are also great because they are always on the court. I think this season and our record would look very different if he didn't miss 16 games before even the All-Star break. How confident can any of us be that he won't miss more games before the season is over?

This sounds like the "Wall is never going to" talk all over again. People were so ready to dump him off due to injuries and inconsistent play. If you let Beal hit the open market he'd be gone in an matter of seconds and you'll most likely spend years trying to replace him. He's young, he's developing and this is what happens when you draft 19-year olds. It takes time.

Did Wall ever tell us he could never play a full season? Yes, it has reminded me of Wall as well. But just because it's similar doesn't mean the results will be the same.

The league used to accept high school grads. We've seen young players enter the nba before and manage success before their rookie deals ended. Claiming that players fail to show consistent star caliber play, 4 years into their career, because they are young simply isn't a valid argument. They also do not normally come with recurring injuries that require minute restrictions at 22. That's something you don't normally see from players under 30. Long story short, Beal is not following the normal course of NBA star player development.

Now keep in mind there is a lot of basketball to be played. He could earn a max deal in the remainder of this season. Ask Kirk Cousins about the difference a little more than half a season can make.

Wall was a better all around player than Beal is now before he got his max contract. He also said in an interview afterwards that he was surprised by the contract because he didn't feel he had earned it yet.

There is no question DeRozan right now is better than Brad, but that shouldnt really be a conversation. There is zero chance he is coming here. Brad isnt going anywhere unless he is traded. His injury predicament destroyed his trade value. So all we can hope for is that he isnt maxed. Sure it isnt our money. But that argument shouldnt adhere to the Wizards because Ted is not Snyder. He is not going to over pay for anything. The money situation is exactly why we have been a team of one year contracts for two seasons.

Its not that were ready to dump him, the question is is he worth MAX money. If you pay max money for a guy who isn't an elite player, and on top of that misses ~20 games a year, you're at a significant handicap.

Still no TO Witt? Flat as hell. Sloppy as hell.

Wait til they cut it to 1. Thats worked in the past. Could see their lackadaisical effort the first couple possessions.

Can Witt do film work watching the way Pop works the game with his use of TOs?
