The Official Washington Basketball Thread: Wizards, Mystics etc

Atlanta and Dallas owned us. But we lost to Toronto at the beginning of the year playing short handed, beat Houston, and those OKC losses were games we should have won that they stole because of ****ty officiating and Durant hero ball.

Also beat Chicago 2/3 times, and almost all 3. Destino still made good points though. I'm not sure this team will go any further than last year's team did.

Btw the Lakers just beat the Bulls. Us beating teams like the Lakers DOES count for something.

They have to work out an extension with Beal this summer first. If that doesn't happen, that'll change things a little.

I did some rough counting the other day, and Beal's cap hold for that summer will be around 11 million. Getting Beal to sign an extension this summer might not be to our advantage. Or it might be a major advantage. It depends on how much we can sign him for this summer.

My sense is that Beal is not worth even close to a max extension right now and shouldn't be able to command one a year early like Wall did. If we can sign him to Steph Curry money and lock him in at around 11 million a year, it's definitely to our advantage to sign him early. That figure wouldn't exceed his 2016 cap hold and getting him below max right before the cap might shoot up means he'd eventually be a HUGE bargain.

But if, for example, Beal were to blow up down the stretch of this season like Wall did in March and April of 2013 and raise his asking price to max territory, that would change things. Negotiating an early deal that goes over the 11 million cap hold would hurt our chances at signing Durant. We could go into that summer with Beal unsigned and only costing 11 million against the cap, move a small contract to make max room, sign Durant, and THEN sign Beal to whatever deal. We'd be able to use exceptions for Beal's contract to go over the cap if Durant is already signed prior to Beal's extension.

Or Beal could say, "no I don't want to take less than a max deal just to negotiate early because the cap is set to jump. I'll go into next season with no extension and gamble that I can play my way into a max deal, or at least a better per year amount than I'll get if I negotiate in 2015." I could see this happening. Unless he gets hurt, this might be the smartest play for Beal. But of course he could get hurt. So I think he should be willing to deal this summer.

If I were Ernie, I'd try and negotiate with Beal this summer and I'd put a 5 year, 55 million dollar offer on the table for him. I'd be willing to go as high as 12 million per year, but I would put off negotiations until the next summer if he was demanding more money than that because adding 3 million in cap commitments for the summer of 2016 means I might have to figure out how to get rid of Webster or Humphries without taking salary back. I'd tell Beal that if he wants a max deal, then prove to me you're worth it in '15/'16. Play like an AS. He'll be an RFA. Worse comes to worst, we match a 4 year max offer that some other team made.

Garrett Temple wants to play but is willing to impact Wizards in other ways

Garrett Temple understands his role on the Washington Wizards. He was re-signed over the summer to provide depth at both guard positions as a defensive specialist but, most importantly, to bring a professional presence in the locker room. Temple has fulfilled those duties. He has played sparingly over the last two months but has maintained a positive attitude.

He is often the first player applauding his teammates and constantly provides words of encourage. He plays the role to perfection.

But Temple believes he can be more than just a morale booster. He thinks he can contribute on the floor and points to the 13 games he started at the beginning of the season as evidence. He supplied further proof in theWizards’ 106-98 loss to the Phoenix Suns Wednesday, captaining an all-reserve unit that trimmed Washington’s deficit from 17 to four points in less than five minutes to start the fourth quarter.

Randy should play Temple and use Dre sparingly from now until the AS break. Miller looks like his legs are gone and he's out there dogging it. Get him some rest now, then after the AS break he can come back fresh. Then it's about two months until the playoffs and we can rotate Temple and Dre a couple games each to keep him fresh for the postseason.

I wouldn't do a first either, his contract expires in the offaeason but with Rubio coming back soon they don't need him. Maybe like you said a protected pick or a pick in a later year.

I'd trade a second round pick.  Maybe two.  We'll just sell them anyway so it's not like they matter.

So we've had the easier schedule in the nba and we struggle against better teams. I know what i'd say about another team that I learned those facts about..... And they've hit a physical wall. Not great indicators.

My sense is that Beal is not worth even close to a max extension right now and shouldn't be able to command one a year early like Wall did.

Guards can either create and beat defenders off the dribble, or they are role players. Max SG are the guys that firmly believe "no one can guard me one on one." Getting to the rim and getting to the line is a large part of the job.

Beal isn't that. He's an average defender and a good shooter. He's a good role player that might get better one day. Until he does a max contract is insane.

Wall was far better than Beal is now when he got his deal and even that one was arguably premature. John Wall himself said he was surprised by it because he didn't feel he'd done anything to earn it at the time.

The wizards aren't horrible anymore. They need to stop making contract offers like a desperate team.

Destino is right on the money. This team has serious flaws. I am not upset though. This is one of the best Wiz teams in my lifetime. I am thoroughly enjoying the season.

But I don't see this team is not getting passed the second round in the playoffs.

We need a go-to scorer. We need a legit rim protector. We need a back-up PG. That is a lot of holes.

Thibs isn't really an upgrade and I'm not sure our old guys or stress injury suffering back court can handle his insane minutes.

Great basketball coaches are hard to find.  Most of the NBA guys succeed or fail entirely on talent and don't really get more out of their rosters.
