Building a Great Defense (Pittsburgh Steelers)

"This defense has been top 5 in the league for what seems like the last 10 years. That doesn’t happen by making big free agent splashes or mortgaging your future…it’s done through solid scouting and sound decision making when it comes to Free Agents and who to keep and who to let go."

But that method isn't nearly as fun for Danny. It won't get you on Sportscenter in March and April.

No wonder James Harrison playing like a wild man he's undrafted this guy is a beast he certainly playing a chip on his shoulder just saying to all the teams you didn't draft me. Yeah, The Redskins can learn from this but most likely they won't :(. They will continue to go after names that have seen their last days.

Yeah Snyderrato dont like to be silenced on SportsCenter, but the quote from the article you posted can be extended to the whole team not just the defense and that is how teams are built.

They have a shut down D because they play a 3-4. They also have a D-Cord who knows the ins and outs of the 3-4 Defense like he invented it himself.

The 3-4 D in my opinion is the best defense you can have, but it takes time to know how to run it properly.

And you have a GW sig, he is a 4-3 D guy, just like the Giants and Colts (last 2 to win the SP).

We have a top 10 D, even with no offense and what have we alsways run? 4-3.

The steelers are great on D because of the DC and everybody being happy to be on the team.

They don't change coaches very often.

They make the right choice the first time.

That's a testament to the Rooney's ownership accumen and the solid GM structure/scouting in the front office. Both being things we haven't seen in Washington since Jack Kent Cooke, may he rest in peace.

Didn't make a big splash last offseason, now did he? And the only reason why Taylor was traded for because of injury. 2 DE's going down in training on the first day? They gambled. Everyone liked the move at the time, but since Taylor didn't put up the numbers, its Vinny's fault. When do the players get held accountable for what goes on in the games? Taylor said he didn't like Blache's scheme.

Exactly, the good teams draft well and make smart FA acquisitions. The ability to find talent in every round of the draft.

It helps that the coaching staff is in place every year, but without talent that would not matter.

The one complaint people always have is we don't get after the QB. That's part scheme and part personnel. We don't have anyone truly capable of doing it on the line. The same time, I'm sure our scheme keeps guys at "home" sometimes so as to no overrun plays.

The real difference between Pittsburgh's and Baltimore's D's when compared to ours? Attitude.

What is the point of this?

The Redskins have a great defense. It's the coaching and offensive production that's currently under fire.

Yeah, agree. If only the Skins had a D that was consistent, I don't know maybe ranked top ten in 4 out of the last 5 years. Wait, yes, we have that! I am not minimizing the thread, I like the Steelers approach and overriding point here about being prudent and building from within.

But the problem on this team 5 years in a row is offense! Yes it would be great if the D instead of ranked 5th was ranked 1st and made more plays but its not as if teams are lighting up the scoreboard against the Skins.

We have the #5 defense in the league after playing some of the best offenses. Why are we complaining?

Production > Scheme

Our defense works fine the way it is with an offense that does nothing to help. We don't need a change in scheme, we need an offense that scores points.

We don't need a change in scheme.

We need more talent. Especially at DT and OLB.

"That doesn’t happen by making big free agent splashes or mortgaging your future" -Dagger, December 18.

Shout Out to the FO on this one. We lost Ryan Clark to this unbelievable Defense and we didn't even bat an eye. We traded for Taylor and his 8 million contract and he hasn't done anything for us. We signed Springs but he hasn't been playing well lately. We've traded picks away like we were giving away candy. :helmet:

4-3 defense is a good defense. The scheme is what is key. When Williams was here, he used the zone blitz scheme. But guess what? The fans complained because Williams blitzed. OMG! Its a zone blitz scheme. The pressure comes from the back 7 just the Steelers, only difference is the 3-4.

I hate the zone blitz scheme we run. For one thing, we don't ever have a blitzer running free to the QB. Seems like our blitzer always gets picked up. Two, we are NOT a good zone team. We suck at zone and are better man to man. Without #1, #2 gets burned alot. I'd rather us play a press blitz scheme where our defenders don't give the WR's room and the QB time to pass.

Because the defense never gets pressure/sacks and with us playing so many close games, the defense never makes a game changing play like a sack, INT or fumble. We're good at 3 and outs, but we just aren't a turnover type defense.

We were in the news plenty last offseason for our debacle of a coach search.

I hated the Taylor trade from the beginning. It stink of Snyderatto and all of their other panic induced busts that they never learn from. And of course Taylor doesn't like Blache's scheme. He doesn't fit into it and even I, the lowly fan whose basis for decision making is watching one game a week and reading message boards could figure that out. amazing that the GM who gets paid to make that analysis could not.

Also, we tried to trade two first for Chad Johnson. We clearly suck.
