Hillary Clinton to accept Obama's offer of secretary of state job

President-elect Barack Obama reaching out to former rivals to build a broad coalition administration

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/nov/17/hillary-clinton-secretary-of-state

Hillary Clinton plans to accept the job of secretary of state offered by Barack Obama, who is reaching out to former rivals to build a broad coalition administration, the Guardian has learned.

Obama's advisers have begun looking into Bill Clinton's foundation, which distributes millions of dollars to Africa to help with development, to ensure that there is no conflict of interest. But Democrats do not believe that the vetting is likely to be a problem.

Clinton would be well placed to become the country's dominant voice in foreign affairs, replacing Condoleezza Rice. Since being elected senator for New York, she has specialised in foreign affairs and defence. Although she supported the war in Iraq, she and Obama basically agree on a withdrawal of American troops.

Clinton, who still harbours hopes of a future presidential run, had to weigh up whether she would be better placed by staying in the Senate, which offers a platform for life, or making the more uncertain career move to the secretary of state job.

I think they had serious hurdles to overcome in understanding Bill's financial ties to foreign governments through donations to the "clinton foundation" which does a lot of international relief.

I think Obama really wanted her in his administration and was willing to go out on a limb. I also think Hillary will be a fine Secretary of State. A powerful voice in the administration.

lol@mccain

clinton taking to long to answer...he should retract offer.

I don't think Clinton took too long to accept the offer. I think Obama was being careful in both trying to fully understand some of her husbands dealings with foreign governments, as well as judging the response to the leak which they engineered last friday.

I think the cautious one was Obama. Hillary's said from day one if the job was offered she'd accept it, and Bill repeated that statement over the weekend.

Not too happy with this, but I think she can be a pretty good Secretary of State but I think there were more qualified individuals out there. Oh well, we will see what happens.

Edit: I would rather have seen Bill Richardson or Chuck Hagel in there.

You would have preferred Russ Feingold? Ralph Nader? :)

I would love to see ralph get something. I'd love to see Ralph on that board overseeing the bail out money.... or maybe crafting the deal with the auto makers. It will never happen cause the Dems have an ongoing feud with Ralphie... But Ralph is a great American and an incorruptible advocate for Americans. He's also an independent out of the box thinker.

It would be great to pull him back into the fold. The democrats could really use him to help the country..

Oddly enough this is where I think the Biden VP pick sucked for Obama. He'd have been more useful in this role. I am very surprised Richardson didn't get this job, although strangely enough I prefer Clinton over him. Now I wanna vomit.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Richardson get an under secretary of State position. He and Hillary hate each other since he endorsed Obama early on during the campagne. His endorsement came at a bad time for hillary.

That would be another page out of Lincoln/ FDR's book. Appoint people of different philosophies as under secretaries and then you can watch the two battle it out when discussing policy. FDR was famous for this trick. Both parties would leave the room thinking the President agreed with them.

Ralph lost any chance of anything with this clip right here where, on Obama's election night, he asks if Obama is going to be an Uncle Sam or an Uncle Tom in regards to corporations. The point may have been valid but you don't say something like that especially when he said it.

I used to be very fond of Nader. Unfortunately, he seems to go have gone so far around the bend on the "A Pox On Both Their Houses" routine, that I am not sure he can ever really offer anything constructive to national politics again.

If you can identify to me how having someone as secretary of state who has been entrenched in white house politics for the past 15 years, please let me know.

Hillary has personally met and is on first name basis with all of the leaders of the world. She is known and respected by them even the Senate Republican minority leader said as much over the weekend. She is highly vetted and has a jaw of stone with regards to politics. Hillary also has a sizable political portfolio of her own, and that can be very useful if Obama want's to address some of the worlds intractable controversial problems. Hillaries political portfolio being separate from the presidency can isolate the presidency from controversial moves.. It's a powerful tool not many other Secretaries of state posses.

Ralph has got a lot of good ideas. The problem with Ralph is he get's frustrated with people who think small. He is not a fan of the Democrats especially the Clinton's centrist policies. I'm not saying Ralph is the guy who should be running the show. I'm saying having a guy with Ralphs integrety and inteligence around to give you the contrary opinion could be useful.

Ralph would be especially good at overseeing deals or corporate abuses...

I think the fact of the matter is Raph has earned a few proclivities. Ralph is probable single handedly responsible for saving more americans lives than any body in US history.

From his work to get car safty inspections, to his work in getting cars with fatal flaws recalled. Hell we wouldn't have safety belts in cars without Ralphie.

Nader has become a caricature of himself. He is no longer the man he was. He is nothing but Cindy Sheehan in a suit.
