The Tyler Jones era should begin this year

Fans should start taking note of Tyler Jones. He has been excellent in practice. His kickoffs average end zone and 4.0+ hang times. He is constantly outperforming Hall. Jones has a much stronger leg and has missed only 2 FGs since training camp began. Jones led the nation in scoring as a kicker his senior year at Boise state and was 24-27 in FGs. He was perfect in pre-season with the Browns last year with a game winning 41 yarder against the Giants. He was also a star in NFL Europe this past summer. Hall will never be the same after surgery and is struggling. He has to ice his groin after every practice. Jones is the best young kicker in the NFL and should be given the opportunity to be the the man in Washington. The team needs to give him plenty of reps in pre-season. Even if the team keeps Hall for one final year, Jones needs to be the kick-off specialist.

I believe in Gibbs, too, but he also thought that Ladell was a 3rd down back (huh?!?!?), and he did keep Derrick "Shankmeister" Frost. We can't expect him to be right all the time. I, for one, think that it's time to move beyond Hall. He's been a great kicker, yes, but we need to grab one of these young studs NOW, and not wait. We've already lost Novak to the Cards; let's not lose another good young kicker.

Novak wasn't a good kicker. I don't know how a guy who has two kicks blocked in 5 games and has never made one past 40 yards gets so much hype. Also, his kickoffs left a lot to be desired.

He could be given alot of credit in the 1st Dallas win last year. As far as I'm concerned it was Santana/Brunell/Novak for most credit to the win, if he missed either extra point, we may not have won. He also stopped that dude from scoring on the kickoff I think, could be wrong on that one. Plus he went to MD like that other guy said.

I like John Hall, a little bit, if Tyler Jones is better, then put him in there. I think we'd be good with a younger guy to get going for the future as long as he's consistently good.

he kicked perfectly for us while he was here, two of them getting deflected is or isn't his problem, I am not too sure.

I think Hall is great if he's healthy, but that is obviously the biggest question to ask in the NFL.

On this team Betts is a third down back.

Considering he was a young guy who made the clutch game winning field goal against the seahawks in week 3, lots of Skins fans have some affinity for him.

Yep but there was always a case of sitting on your hands with Novak sometimes he kicked a good ball but most of his kicks seemed low over the line which is down to his kicking style and was responsible in the most part for getting his kicks blocked .

Hall or Jones I really don't care Hall has big game experince and hoping that he is fully healed from his misdiagnosed groin strian over the least two years I would put my money on him rather than a rokkie making the big game kick .

If Tyler Jones can prove his consistency during the summer, I believe he has a good shot at taking the position. He’s younger, probably healthier, and cheaper than John Hall, which gives his chances somewhat of a boost.

On the field, John Hall is starting to live off his name (veteran status) alone. If T. Jones is still around for final cuts, things could get very interesting here.

man I really hope Hall can recover come opening night. Like someone else mentioned, when he's healthy, he's one of the best in the league. The other thing I really like about Hall is that he really enjoys being a Redskin. You see him jumping up and down on game day when the team does good. You'd think he plays a bigger role on the team. In Dallas last year, he was the first one to congratulate Brunell after the second TD. In Arizone, you saw him go crazy after ST intercepted Warner. I can mention so many more too. Get well soon Hall! You're one of the best!

Excerpts from the article ...

"One-for-three ain't good enough," special teams coach Danny Smith said. "But I love the guy and I think he'll have a great year."

... the Redskins, big spenders on offense and defense in free agency, opted to pinch their pennies on special teams and keep their faith in Hall. He has only token competition at camp from former Boise State kicker Tyler Jones, who spent the spring in NFL Europe. "I don't have much to be concerned with John," coach Joe Gibbs said. "We've had the (injuries) and everything the last couple of years. He's an extremely hard worker. In fact, the main thing we've got to try to do is back him off. You never want to miss field goals -- don't get me wrong -- but we have a lot of confidence in him."

The coaches are sold on Hall. Unless he get injured in the pre-season, the job is his.

His leg looked very strong in the scrimmage. Those were long attempts that were not missed by much. They ended up high in the net from nearly fifty yards. He'll straighten them out.

That's better news than just making preseason field goals, IMO...Hall's longest was only a 43 -yarder (acc. to the article), and many were critical of the lack of depth on kickoffs. A stronger leg than last year is important, and he has the veteran experience to improve the accuracy.
