I am actually excited for this card. I don't think I would pay for this card, but hell, its free MMA.

But anyways, I am excited for pretty much all of the fights on the main card. Sanchez/Stevenson is not really a main event fight on most cards, but it should be a good fight. I think it is a darn good card top to bottom.

I am really excited for the Marquart/Gouveia fight.

I just realized that this card is free...I was just thinking yesterday how I didn't want to chip in to watch this one. But I am pretty excited about the Maia/Sonnen, Marquardt/Gouveia, Kos/Thiago fights.

I also want to see if Junior dos Santos gives us another highlight reel KO...I'm not familiar with his opponent, he has a TON of wins by submission, doesn't look like some can either....he is 6-8 though!

I'm looking forward to this card as well. Maia is one of my fav. fighters right now. I didn't even realize Kos was fighting again already. He fought twice in a month at the end of last year, didn't think he'd fight for a while. Unfortunately, I won't see it until Sunday since I'm entertaining non-MMA fans on Saturday.

quick picks:

Dan Hardy vs. Rory Markham: Hardy wins by homefield advantage

Koscheck vs. Thiago: koscheck keeps it standing & subsequently KO's Thiago

Sonnen vs. Maia: sonnen's been tapped by guys not half as good as Maia. the fight will hit the ground, at which time maia banks another submission of the night

Gouveia vs. Marquardt: hardest fight to pick. gouveia's best shot is to ko him early, otherwise i think nate can get the takedown and control him from top for a decision victory. i'll go with Nate The Great in this one

Sanchez vs. Stevenson: stevenson's best hope is to hope the weight cuts affect diego. diego doesn't have the best wrestling, maybe joe can get a takedown and work from the top. i don't see it happening. diego by sub, round 2

its amazing how fast public opinion has changed on Kos.......not too long ago he was universally regarded as "the blanket"

Kos has been my favorite fighter since I started watching MMA. I am still relatively new to the sport, been about 2 years since i started religiously following it. But my first PPV watched was UFC 69, where GSP lost to Serra. For some reason I was able to follow Kos since then and have taken a liking to him. Heres to hoping he TKO's Thiago.

UFC 95: Hey look Josh Koscheck's fighting, picks:

Josh Koscheck vs. Paulo Thiago: Koscheck, who is looking like a madman right now trying to get another title shot, has been given a newcomer to ante up for what will probably be a few top of the line fighters in his near future. Assuming he wins, of course. Thiago is an undefeated submission specialist with 7 wins coming by various chokes; he has never KO'd anyone. He's also never faced a fighter close to Koscheck's level. Koscheck's hands have gotten a ton better and his wrestling will prevent a jiu jitsu match from occurring. Koscheck, KO, early round 1.

Demian Maia vs. Chael Sonnen: Sonnen's recent fight with Karo Parysians' favorite fighter to cry with (Paulo Filho) wasn't very convincing. Filho was a lump of nothing out there, and Sonnen carefully boxed him like grandpa Bert teaching little Billy how to throw a jab. However, I think Sonnen will look good from the outset by out pointing Maia on the feet. Sonnen's weakness has always been getting caught in a sub after scoring a takedown. He should keep this on the feet as much as he can. Maia will dare Chael to take him down or wait 'til he's entered the pocket far enough to trip him or pull guard. Maia is the real deal on the ground, folks. Fighters can drill sub defense all camp long and get one slapped on in seconds by this guy. Maia, flying omoplata, round 2.

Nate Marquardt vs. Wilson Gouviea: Marquardt is more experienced, more versatile, more energetic, and trains with the white-hot Greg Jackson camp. Gouviea, at ATT, doesn't have a shabby camp either, and his power and long reach could surprise Nate much like Mike Thomas Brown did to perennial wild-man Urijah Faber. A more than decent puncher's chance. If that doesn't happen, this fight is pretty much taylor-made for Marquardt as far as energy and pace goes. If Marquardt can keep his senses about him while implementing his energetic style, he will break Wilson down and hurt him badly. TKO (Doctor Stoppage [missing eye]) end of round 2.

Dan Hardy vs. Rory Markham: No disrespect to these two, but wondering why this fight is on the main card. Watch it become Fight of the Night. Don't know much about these cats, other than Dan Hardy has a distinct advantage if he knows Thunder's flying-mohawk move from the Super Nintendo game "Killer Instinct". Both these guys like to swing, and Markham has never been to a decision, gotta love that. UD, Markham.

Diego Sanchez vs. Joe Stevenson: I'd like to pick an upset tonight, and here is my last chance. *thinks about changing his Marquardt/Gouveia pick*. Ahem, anyway, Diego should take this pretty handily. People always point to Joe-Dad's experience, but the quality of his opposition, other than the fighters that gave him his two recent losses, is nothing that will drop your jaw. Diego, other than his Kalib Starnes-like performance against Koscheck, has looked like he belongs near the top. Time to see if dropping 15 lbs helps or hurts. Diego, Bull Charge KO, :04 round 1.

Cool article on one of the chicks in tonight's MMA card from the Patrot Center: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/02/19/AR2009021901890.html

This was interesting:

According to a list compiled by MMAweekly.com, two of the top 10 most-viewed MMA bouts of all time were women's fights televised by CBS in 2008. Each fight grabbed more than 5 million viewers.
I'm guessing Carano's fights. I knew she was popular, but not that she was THAT popular.

he was such a dick on the show I couldnt stand him. but then he fights after diego is hurt and gets beat. whats his excuse? NONE!!

then he fights GSP and when he loses and after everyone comes out with a greased up excuse what does he say? He beat me..thats it.

"Im a fighter..." love that he says that. the kid is maturing and it is now a pleasure to watch him fight. I just wish that Rashad would show some maturity too and stop all the dancing during and after fights.

UFC 95: Attack of the Mid-carders!

Josh Koscheck vs. Paulo Thiago: Thiago has a subbers chance. That's it. Kos by KO

Demian Maia vs. Chael Sonnen: I believe Sonnen was fighting Fhilio hurt and should look much better today. I don't think it will be enough though.

Maia by Sub of the Night

Nate Marquardt vs. Wilson Gouviea: Gone back and forth on this one. Gouviea is a big middleweight just like Nate. Nate won't have the size advantage he normally has here. I think Nate wins this fight 6 out of 10 times, but this is not one of them.

Gouviea by KO of the Night

Dan Hardy vs. Rory Markham: This has no business being a co-main event even with a local kid fighting, but Dana and Joe Silva know more than I do so I think this will be a great fight.

Hardy by KO in The Fight of the Night.

Diego Sanchez vs. Joe Stevenson: Huge fight for both of these guys. Joe has lost 2 of his last 3. Diego is talking a lot of smack about the lightweight division and he needs to back it up. I think he does, though I don;t know who I am pulling for.

Diego by TKO

Just reading the Andre Carter interview in the Stadium

-----------

You mentioned your offseason program. What kind of workouts do you do to get yourself ready for the first day of camp?

“Actually, I’m one of those guys that will do mixed martial arts,” Carter said. “It’s a combination of Muay Thai, kickboxing and boxing itself to work on my hand-eye coordination. It’s one of those workouts that’s really challenging because you think you’re conditioned, but this is a whole different level. You’re just moving nonstop, at a rapid pace, and moving different body parts.
