No_Pressure
how is this possible? We have millions of dollars tied down in dead money that was gauranteed on contracts for guys like Coles. And count against the salary cap. Our guys are cheaper than a lot of teams. People say we overpay because the contracts look huge but they make a 7 year contract huge so they can re-negotiate around year 4, before the biggest chunk of the money is paid out. People only see 7 years 50 million and go "holy crap the Redskins are at it again" while their salary this season may be only 1.5 to 2.5 million. Adam Archuleta may be the highest paid safety in the history of the league but he wont make the most money of any safety in the history of the league. The "highest paid" thing is only on the condition that we actually keep him till the last year of his contract when he gets like a 10 million chunk of money or something. Next year we have more dead money freed up and most of the important players are on long contracts. Most teams will predict cap hell for us AGAIN and they will be wrong AGAIN and they will think were cheating or something.

No, he'll see all that money (unless he sucks or gets injured), but his cap numbers are low for 3 years. Come year 3, he'll either restructure his guaranteed bonuses into signing bonuses (read: no cap hit) or get cut and we'll take a minimal hit. This is the magical key to the Dan Synder contract, and how the Skins avoid cap hell every year. Its really an ingenious system, and if we start winning big-time, more and more teams will start to copy it.

paloosa
Isn't it 2006? The USA Today won't have those numbers until next year and we will be right back here saying, " Isn't it 2007? but it does show that what you here about salary cap hell and it's association with the Redskins is false. Why do you think Dan Snyder is so successful in Business. It is due to his hiring of Joe Gibbs and other people in his organization that are the best at what they do. So far it has worked and he has learned to beat the cap and still get what he wants in Free Agency and in the Draft.

kappaluvacee
I hate to hear people say "buying a superbowl." It's been proven that the amount you spend on your team doesn't = superbowl. Why wouldn't a owner invest as much allowable in his product. The team and the athletes = an NFL owner's product. I would be pissed if Snyder practiced the Philadelphia philosophy of not paying players even though he is making a crap-load of money off the fans. I remember in 1994 the 49ers went out and got Deion Sanders, Ricky Jackson, Charles Mann, Toi Cook, Ken Norton Jr. and a few more big names free agents and the Media was sayings stuff like they want to build a team to beat the Cowboys or this organization is dedicated to bringing in whoever it takes to win a Super Bowl. But when Daniel Snyder goes out a spends Big $$$$ in the off season of free agents he is trying to buy a Super Bowl. :deal: T.O. plays in Super Bowl Hurt and he is greedy but Emmitt Smith plays a game with a separated shoulder and he is a warrior. DWinzit
I all depends on if the Mediots like you are not. True, the media's (and mine) first impressions of Snyder were far from positive. Unfortunately, he still has to do a lot work to dilute this media perception. Thank goodness for Gibbs coming aboard to right the ship!
JoeSkins
But when Daniel Snyder goes out a spends Big $$$$ in the off season of free agents he is trying to buy a Super Bowl. :deal: Every owner is trying to buy a Super Bowl every year. Unless they strap on a pair of coaching or players' cleats, that's all they can do. Now, the argument can be how much a Super Bowl is worth to any given owner, but regardless, they're all trying to buy one.

I thought we took the hit on Coles last year, and that he's off the books now. Most of the dead cap money is Lavar, Mike Barrow, Chad Morton and Patrick Ramsey. The total is about $15m of dead cap now. Looking at the number, it looks like we are talking base salary, which for the Redskins is pretty low. Most of the money is going in signing bonuses, which is why the amount is so low. Jason
