Gallen5862
Why would the gang think they could take a bridge? That makes no sense to challange the police.
Ghost of
Well, maybe because the gangs and criminals ruled much of New Orleans previously, even with infrastructure and police there to monitor them, they assumed a broken social structure would enable them to rule the roost. I kind of wish we could get rid of the thugs in every city and town in one fell swoop(until the next generation of criminals and thugs was born, of course.) It seems like it is Marshall law there and the Army is policing the area. The gangs have no chance with the army compared to the local police. Maybe we should let the Army take care of big gangs in big cities instead of the police

Gallen5862
The Army corp of engineers are reporting some of their contractors were shot by the police on the Bridge near the Levee. Heidenreich
i saw this on Yahoo. They were contractors after all http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050904/ap_on_re_us/katrina_shootings_hk1 NEW ORLEANS - Police shot eight people carrying guns on a New Orleans bridge Sunday, killing five or six, a deputy chief said. A spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers said the victims were contractors on their way to repair a canal. The contractors were walking across a bridge on their way to launch barges into Lake Pontchartrain to fix the 17th Street Canal, said John Hall, a spokesman for the Corps. Earlier Sunday, New Orleans Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley said police shot at eight people, killing five or six. The shootings took place on the Danziger Bridge, which spans a canal connecting Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River. Ghost of
Edit: Now Im reading that the police killed those who shot AT the contractors. If this is the case, I will be much, much happier. That would have been a tragedy on top of a tragedy.

Larry
I'm remembering the only scene I saw in the movie MacArthur. It's the "return to the Phillipenes". Clearing in the jungle, sounds of combat all around. Young GI looks up and sees . . . Macarthur, striding directly accross the clearing, with no effort at cover at all. GI runs up to the General. "Uh, sir? Uh, are you, . . Are you sure you really want to be out here, sir? I mean, we killed a Japanese sniper right here, not five minutes ago." Mac walks right past him. "Excellant, son. That's exactly what you should do with 'em."

Fergasun
Seems like New Orleans isn't the only city we should declare martial law in. I propose every month we declare martial law in a city and send in the National Guard to clean up all the gang members. We can start with Los Angeles once New Orleans is under control. Serously, why do we tolerate such a high crime rate in the inner cities? If that happens do you think Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton will protest and scream it's racist? Larry
No other details were immediately available And if the truth isn't as rosey as first reports, then details will remain unavailable. Note to folks who're ticked off at the cops and the government right now. Right now, it's real easy for a cop or a soldier to get rid of a body. Time to put the guns away and play nicey-nicey. visionary
NEW ORLEANS - New Orleans turned much of its attention Sunday to gathering up and counting the dead across a ghastly landscape awash in perhaps thousands of corpses. “It is going to be about as ugly of a scene as I think you can imagine,” the nation’s homeland security chief warned. As authorities struggled to keep order, police shot and killed at least five people Sunday after gunmen opened fire on a group of contractors traveling across a bridge on their way to make repairs, authorities said. Larry
Aparantly at least two people have misread what I said. (Or I miswrote what I was thinking. Nah, couldn't happen.) My point was spawned by the conflicting reports of "cops shoot gunmen"/"repair workers shot"/"cops shoot repair workers"/"cops shoot people who were shooting at repair workers". My point was that this is a chaotic situation, and that I'd bet the cops (and lots of other people) probably haven't got a lot of sleep, lately, and that it's reasonable to suspect that some mistakes will get made. My point was that, if you're not wearing a uniform, then simply carrying a gun could be hazardous to your health. (Unfortunately, not carrying one could be, too.) Therefore, "let's be carefull out there".
