  1. Additionally, I'd say that there exist evangelical communities who aren't beholden to the corporate Christian sellouts. Evangelicals who care about the poor, about social justice, etc., could (and did) easily see in Clinton policies more likely to address the issues they think are most important for Christians to support.

  4. Likewise Spiff. I know Megadeth has some great tunes but I find his voice distracting.
  5. Been digging John Frum too, pretty fierce tech death.
  6. I thought Ragnarok was great. In terms of "silly Thor," some of the early Lee/Kirby classic tales portrayed him as a noble but occasionally goofy character. I don't think the character shift is all that jarring. Plus the latest movie was such a great Kirby tribute in so many ways, and Kirby is still the king o' comics.
  7. I don't like all of Opeth's more recent folk-influenced stuff, but they're still pretty great. Lots of good doom these days, too. I dig Pallbearer quite a lot.
  8. Let's do this! Seems like there's enough metalheads on ES to get the ball rolling. I'm currently listening to some old Mercyful Fate, and I figured why not. What's everyone rocking out to lately?
  9. Buddhism probably shouldn't be understood as an offshoot in the sense that the term is generally used (which implies some kind of prior institutional or sociological connection). It developed, according to classical Buddhist understandings, in a milieu defined by Hindu cosmology, social caste, and devotion, but that's a distinction with a difference. Siddhartha Gautama studied, we are told, with multiple sages and gurus and professed not to have achieved enlightenment. It was only in solitary meditation that he achieved insight into the suchness of reality, the Four Noble Truths, etc. Buddha is understood (again, in classical lineages, which doesn't account for all the folk adaptations in East Asia especially, where it's partly woven with lots of much older traditions) as in no way divine, certainly not a god. The very tradition seeks to develop disciplines for avoiding attachments to things and categories (even categories like "God" or "religion" or "the self") which might hinder us in the quest for awakening.
  10. I know we usually end up just talking about movies and shows on this thread. But for anyone who reads comics on tablets, there's a monster sale on Comixology and Amazon right now. Loads of new and archival collections at 99 cents per.
  11. And here I was thinking that I missed some awesome Jumbo posts that were deleted overnight.
  12. So inspired. I want me an Emma Gonzalez t-shirt.
  13. Man, when Constantine was first introduced in Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing (top 10 all time run in my opinion), he took off for a while. The first few years of Hellblazer were pretty strong.
  14. Oh my God, that is a remarkable portrait of stupid. I'll bet Fox viewers think that chart represents hard-nosed investigative journalism. "We drew lines between this ish, so that is PROOF."
  15. Wow, that little guy tugs at the heart strings.

  17. Hot Pie on the Iron Throne or I am done!
  18. If somehow McConnell could end up in jail, there would be much rejoicing.
  19. Just saw Black Panther as well. A triumph in every way. It's really tough for me to think that anything is better than Avengers 1, because that was such a Marvel fanboy nerdgasm, but I think Black Panther is probably Marvel's best movie. For me, it clearly knocked it out of the park just as a superhero movie. But the acting, the effects, the editing, the Kendrick, and the sheer smarts the film just impressed the hell out of me. Plus, it was just so awesome to see multi-generational black families out together, dressed for pride in many cases, and savoring this game changer of a film. Wakanda forever!
  20. Dude, that's amazing. Thanks for posting that.
  21. Despite his cute looks, Boogie is the alpha in our pack. He's a terrorist. No lie: we once caught him strutting in the backyard with a box-cutter in his mouth, and he has been known to steal drugs.
  22. Booger in one of his favorite spots.
