The "inside The Nfl" Guys On The Portis-bailey Trade

Anyone watch last night? Once again no Skins highlights, but in their roundtable discussion they highlighted the Bailey-Portis deal and all agreed that the Redskins got the better of it. The argument seemed to be that Portis was coming on strong and with the new rules it's just not a smart move to pay a cornerback that much money.

Thought it was interesting to see the "experts" finally come around.

Most of us knew at the time the Skins got the better end of the deal. Anyone who knows football knew that -- though, as Redskin fans few of us thought we needed to give the second-round pick as well.

The power of the media though shaped the question and public opinion quickly. Such is the immediate disdain of Snyder, the media quickly moved as a group to deny what everyone knows -- that a runner is generally more important to franchise success than a corner -- and decided the primary point was since a corner is harder to find, it was a trade that favored the Broncos.

Which position is harder to find is only relevant in the draft. Any other time when you are dealing with KNOWN commodities, the question changes since you know you have the runner and the corner and which is more important to a franchise.

the media will have to start slowly turning their attention to the skins as the season wraps up cuz they know that next year we're going to be a major force in the league. they also know that we may just surprise a few people here at the end of this season.

This is the way I look at it...

We traded Bailey who we thought and now its apparent that he is not as dominant as THEY (media) made him out to be.

We got Portis who has been productive so just look at his #'s the last 2 years and then this year (even though our offense has struggled & the season isnt over yet) and thats indicative that he can perform and should be considered one of the most consistent, durable, dependable backs in the league (no matter what team he's played on) even though he has had a down year (for him).

But...look what the Broncos did w/their 2nd round pick (the one we gave them)....they drafted a ............... Running back! That right there should tell you that they werent sold on the Griffins, Hearts, Droughns etc...that they had on their roster. You would think that w/73 different backs and the "system" that they have that Trung Canditate could run the ball for them and be successful...my point is that they knew they HAD A VOID to fill on their roster and it wasnt just the SYSTEM.

Not to mention that we gave up Chump and a pick for CP....so all parties in the deal knew who the crown jewel of the trade was for.

Us, well we had a void and new that we didnt have a stockpile of corners ready to throw in the mix, so we got Springs who has played as good as you can this year.

Champ being in the probowl is a joke but look at the other corners in the AFC this year and there arent that many studs....if Tori James made it (i dont give a damm about his # of picks) on a team that isnt a top defensive team and has no shot at the playoffs then that should tell you something.

They need to start showing some highlights of us on that show...

That is just a sign of how the media is going to slowly but surely begin to jump on the bandwagon b/c if we make the playoffs this yr they have to talk about us, and they know next yr we are going to be in the playoffs for sure...

I really don't know why this is still being debated since Baily was not going to stay in Washington, the debate should be, was it worth being compensated for his loss by trading a #2 pick. We lose Baily regardless, they get Tatum Bell. Sounds like a good deal both ways to me. Neither Baily or Portis has preformed up to media expectations. Here is the real question, which team over payed to get their player? I guess we will find that out in about 3 years.

From ESPN:

Washington

Rushing yards per game

2003 - 103.3 (#23 NFL)

2004 - 111.7 (#17 NFL)

Passing Yards Allowed per game

2003 - 199.7 (#14 NFL)

2004 - 178.0 (#5 NFL)

Denver

Rushing yards per game

2003 - 164.3 (#2 NFL)

2004 - 137.8 (#6 NFL)

Passing Yards Allowed per game

2003 - 176.8 (#6 NFL)

2004 - 191.9 (#10 NFL)

Looking at this you can see the Washington improved in both rushing offense and pass defense. Denver on the other hand took a step back in both areas.

Clearly the two players in question are not the only factors in this but the facts are the facts. Washington has improved in areas affected by the trade Denver has not.
