LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas police have arrested a man in the deadly 1996 drive-by shooting of Tupac Shakur, a long-awaited break in a case that has frustrated investigators and fascinated the public ever since the hip-hop icon was gunned down on the Las Vegas Strip 27 years ago.

Duane “Keffe D” Davis was arrested early Friday morning, although the exact charge or charges were not immediately clear, according to two officials with first-hand knowledge of the arrest. They were not authorized to speak publicly ahead of an expected indictment later Friday.

Davis has long been known to investigators and has himself admitted in interviews and in his 2019 tell-all memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” that he was in the Cadillac where the gunfire erupted during the September 1996 drive-by shooting. Shakur was 25 when he was gunned down.

The arrest comes two months after Las Vegas police raided his wife’s home July 17 in neighboring Henderson. Documents said police were looking for items “concerning the murder of Tupac Shakur.”

Imagine being dumb enough and wanting publicity because you were in the car that murdered someone. All you had to do was shut your mouth, but noooooooo, you think it’s awesome that you were part of a murder.

Should have just blamed it on Obama.

That’s how many serious criminals are caught. You gotta be a narcissist to be OK with murder. Bragging about it fits right in.

So this guy was in the car that shot Tupac?  And he is just now getting arrested?

I don't know the particulars of the case, but I am guessing that the police didn't have enough evidence to place him as the trigger man.  They thought it was someone else in the car.  At the very least though, couldn't he have been arrested as an accomplice?

To me… it kinda seems like the rest of the guys in the car died off and they trying to arrest him before he dies….

I’m sure they looked at him and talked to him but when they did, he told him that he was just saying **** to sell albums and get some street cred and since they didn’t have any proof or evidence, there wasn’t much they could do about it.

until he published a book about how he was an accessory to murder

it seems to me there’s a legitimate chance the only real evidence against him is his own book

Shakur’s shooting stems from a conflict between two gangs based in Compton, California, police said Friday.

Shakur and Marion “Suge” Knight, then the CEO of the rapper’s label Death Row Records, were affiliated with the Mob Piru gang in Compton, Johansson said. Davis was affiliated with the Southside Compton Crips, he added.

Shakur was in Las Vegas to attend a Mike Tyson boxing match at MGM Grand Hotel – an event that Davis and his nephew Orlando Anderson also attended.

After the match, members of Death Row Records saw Anderson near elevator bank inside the hotel, approached him and began kicking and punching him, Johansson said Friday during the news conference, where he showed hotel surveillance footage of the altercation. Shakur and Knight were visible among the men who attacked Anderson.

Both crews left the hotel after the fight, with Shakur and his group headed to a post-fight party at a nightclub.

When Davis learned of the attack on his nephew, Davis “began to devise a plan to obtain a firearm and retaliate against Suge Knight and Mr. Shakur,” Johansson said.

After securing a gun “from a close associate,” Davis got into a white Cadillac with Terrence Brown, Deandre Smith and Anderson, Johansson said. While in the car, Davis handed the gun “to the passengers in the rear seat of the vehicle,” Johansson said.

Eventually, the group tracked down the car Shakur and Knight were in, drove alongside their black BMW, and gunshots were fired from the Cadillac into the BMW, striking Shakur four times, authorities said. The rapper died six days later.

“Duane Davis was the shot-caller for this group of individuals that committed this crime. He orchestrated the plan that was carried out to commit this crime,” Johansson said.

So they assaulted a guy that was otherwise minding his own business in Vegas, and got their car shot up by his uncle. Playing gangster with a bank filled with legitimately earned millions.  What a stupid way to go.

The suspect has been giving out interviews for years now about how he was in the car when the shooting happened, and that it was his nephew who actually pulled the trigger.  He’s been a gigantic idiot, basically hanging a sign over his head saying “arrest me”.

Everyone has know mostly what happened, and how it happened for the better part of a quarter century now.  It’s just funny that he’s now finally being held accountable for his actions.  There’s another major twist to this story, including who else was involved in the planning of the Tupac murder, but that will probably come out in due time.  Let’s just say that a certain hip hop billionaire should be sweating bullets right now about the Keene D arrest, and he better pray that his involvement never comes to light.  He’s done a good job the last 25 years in becoming an American sweetheart, and an untouchable figure, but this will get very interesting as the general public learns more about the specifics.

Seems like no matter how rich these young guys get, they still have something to prove

You can get them out of the hood, but you can't get the hood out of them

Look at Aaron Hernandez
