WTEM 980 this morning said the deal was done late last night. After the deal was done Gibbs met with Williams and signed him. I don't have a link just heard it on the radio. Snyder wanted to wait till thursday to break the news for some reason but since it was leaked to the post they will make the announcement this morning or early afternoon.

Gibbs coming back sounds great, however who is to say that a man that has been out of football for over a decade can come in and turn things around in D.C. This is a new era in pro ball with the players egos and salary cap issues. There are no sure things.

Hush you! If Vermiel did it (who was out of football for like 14 years) than Gibbs can do it with his hands tied behind his back. Vermiel is'nt half the coach Gibbs is. This is history in the making, Gibbs makes contenders out of this football team in 2 years!

It does sound intriguing though!"

I appreciate the caution, but the guy who says that you can come back after ten years is Vermeil. He came back after 14. It may, however, take him a few games to back into the swing of things.

WASHINGTON -- Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs is set to make a surprise return to the Washington Redskins.

NFL sources have comfirmed to ESPN that Gibbs has agreed to coach the Redskins.

The Washington Post, citing sources with connections to Gibbs, reported late Tuesday on its Web site that Gibbs was in serious discussions about returning to the team that he led to three Super Bowl titles.

Gibbs, who is 63, coached the Redskins from 1981 to 1992 before resigning to pursue a career with his own NASCAR team. He has been adamant over the years about not wanting to coach again, although he has retained NFL connections. He is a minority owner of the Atlanta Falcons.

The Redskins are seeking a replacement for Steve Spurrier, who resigned last week. They have interviewed former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel, former Minnesota coach Dennis Green and Seattle defensive coordinator Ray Rhodes, who was in town Tuesday.

A source close to Fassel told the Post that he did not believe Fassel would be hired because the club was planning a major surprise. That source added that he believed Gibbs' return would be the surprise.

Calls to the Redskins and to Gibbs' racing team were not returned immediately.

Gibbs' racing teams have been among the most successful in NASCAR, with two Winston Cup championships in the last four seasons. Bobby Labonte took the title in 2000, Tony Stewart in 2002.

Gibbs' oldest son, J.D., is president of Joe Gibbs Racing. The former coach's youngest son, Coy, finished 14th last season in the Busch Series standings.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Redskins expect to name Joe Gibbs their coach Wednesday, a source within the NFL told The Associated Press.

The Hall of Fame coach has been negotiating a surprise return to the team he led to three Super Bowls, said the source, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The source said the team hoped to complete the deal and make an announcement later Wednesday.

The negotiations were first reported by The Washington Post and CBS Sportsline.com.

The 63-year-old Gibbs coached the Redskins from 1981-92 before resigning to pursue a career with his own NASCAR team. He has been adamant over the years about not wanting to coach again, although he has retained NFL connections. He is currently a minority owner of the Atlanta Falcons.

Gibbs was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1996.

The Redskins are seeking a replacement for Steve Spurrier, who resigned last week. They were known to have interviewed three candidates: former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel, former Minnesota coach Dennis Green and Seattle defensive coordinator Ray Rhodes.

Terms of Gibbs' deal were not immediately available, but the Redskins have budgeted $5 million per year for a coach, the amount they were paying Spurrier.

Calls to Joe Gibbs Racing team were not immediately returned.
