The Official QB Thread- JD5 taken #2. Randall 2.0 or Bayou Bob? Mariotta and Hartman forever. Fromm cut

The fact people think Heinicke is a better QB than Wentz is wild. More feisty? Yes. Ice cold in clutch situations. Usually. Slippery? Yes. Heinicke has all of that over Wentz. But that’s not how you win in the playoffs. You have to have the ability to be quick strike at any moment. Not once a game. But literally at any time. That’s where Wentz, his experience and his arm is superior.

Wentz may take more sacks. That’s the trade off for the quick strike ability.

The question with Wentz is: can he quick strike enough to win.

Were going to find out the answer soon.

  • Koolblue13 changed the title to The Official QB Thread- Wentz is Back, the Time Might Almost be Howell and the Heini Hole is Wiped.

To make the playoffs--and have any chance of advancing once there--the offense had to perform better and become more potent. It started sliding backwards with Heinicke, and he started turning the ball over more. Commanders with him under center haven't won in the last 4 weeks.

Said a month or so ago (no longer guessing pages lol) that we had a better chance of maximizing the offense with Wentz...I didn't think his first 6 games were his ceiling. I'm optimistically hoping that the benching had a positive effect on Wentz and that the offense becomes seriously dangerous now. Still holding on to the Wentz-as-Nick-Foles storyline coming true lol...

We brung Wentz, but he was hurt. If we can't score 20 points and certainly not in the red zone. I think we're the worst in the red zone actually.

I'd say a shift in playcalling was a big reason for what got us to the playoffs, with Heini's help, but the reason we may not make it, is definitely on Heini.

The man leaves significant yards and points on the field every single game.  Washington has no chance of a deep playoff run with Heinicke.  His throws and decision-making are frightening. Wentz' arm gives the team a chance.

The thing that gets missed about the "arm strength" talk, is it's not just about stretching the field. It's the power on outs, the quicker the ball gets to a small hole.

It's a pass being in the air for a half second less, with less arch on it. It shrinks the field at all distances. This is missed by a lot of the Heini/Minshew guys.

It's not that they can't throw a 20 yard out, they just make the ball more catchable for everyone involved. We're lucky to have TMac and Dotson who excel at winning those balls.

It's also about still throwing with velocity and timing when the mechanics aren't there...RG3 could flip a laser 20 yards downfield while backpeddling and throwing off the wrong foot or across his body while jumping in the air.

you don't visit the commanders reddit page much do you?

First: I said on here.

Second: No. And before you ask, I don’t do the Facebook pages or Twitter pages, either.

Bad takes here are top end posts in those places.

B.  Struggles in the red zone which they think is partly because of him being short and he can't see well over the O line in the compressed space

I've always wondered just how much of an advantage being taller affords QB's. I want to say it is fairly significant.

I assumed that's why Heinicke's legs allowed him to get out from the pocket and make plays since he had better vision when he did...no idea if it was true lol, but that was my assumption.

Sounds like a good assumption, friend. Makes sense.

Ron even said that he talked to his captains about this and I'm pretty sure Terry had an opinion on who the playoff QB should be, so who cares if anyone doesn't like Wentz starting.

You are wrong.

I'm not sure how I feel about Rivera saying he talked to the captains...I'm glad he did, but it starts to skirt the line of not taking full ownership of the decision. I don't--and have never--seen Rivera as the type of coach to place blame elsewhere (that's more a Mike Shanahan characteristic lol). But I'm not sure why it needed to be said.  Starts to inch close to "even the captains wanted Heinicke benched" rhetoric. *full disclosure: I did not hear what Rivera said so I may walk this take back after doing so.

Eh. It’s always good to get the pulse of the team prior to making decisions that big time affect them and can upset chemistry. I think it’s smart to do that. Give them some ownership.

My hope is he laid out reasons for why he thinks the change is best and wanted their feedback and they provided it.

I’m just glad we’re not starting Mark Sanchez this weekend.

Or Josh Johnson. Or Kyle Allen. Or Case Keenum. Or Colt McCoy. Or an even older Alex Smith. Or Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Wentz should easily be the best off-the-bench QB we've had in a looooong time. Emphasis on "should" lol...

He didn’t say they were making the decision, he said that he felt it was important to hear from the guys who play what their thoughts were.  That he intended to do more listening than talking.

I’ve thought all along that Rivera has been riding momentum and the pulse of the locker room.  It makes perfect sense to engage them at this juncture.

Its no concern of mine that if they lose, he’ll be like “Terry got it wrong, should have stuck with Heinicke”.

Ron could be gone next year, these guys won't. They're the captains and are leaders. I love the move. He's known them for years now.

Didn't know Taylor was so bad that he didn't even win the bye-week. :(

My concern wasn't about if they lose...it was about not basically just saying "I've made a decision" and maybe following up with some sort of generic "I talked with the players, they understand" type of comment. But again, I did not listen to what he said, just reacting off the paraphrasing of his comments.
