Won’t believe it until he’s actually out of office or behind bars. Or both.

Hopefully that’s a start in the right direction.

Greenberg is presumably providing the same information he provided to the DOJ.  The DOJ declined to prosecute because the have a very high standard (hence their 99% conviction rate) and thought Greenberg wasn't a credible witness because of all of his own issues and some of the other evidence wasn't strong enough to go after a sitting congressman.

Personally, I think the DOJ chickened out even though they have lots of evidence.  If the ethics committee has a lower standard they may still pursue Gaetz.  But, like you, I won't hold my breath.

I'm sure NYT politics writers will jump on Mike Johnson's hypocrisy (even more contrasting) as the ultra-Christian "I monitor my son's porn habits" instead of writing the breaking news article on Joe Biden's age.

Wrong thread?  What does this have to do with Gaetz?

Johnson being threatened by Gaetz?

I was tying McCarthy trying to keep Santos for his caucus numbers as the same thing like Johnson keeping Gaetz to ensure he keeps his caucus numbers as well for votes.

Somewhat cross threading another thread about "Democrats get hammered with one small thing but GOP gets away with murder..." .

The Gaetz ethics investigation was opened in 2021... although in this case, McCarthy could have closed it (maybe?) when the GOP took over in 2023.  For sure McCarthy probably tried to use it as leverage on Gaetz.  Now that Gaetz triggered McCarthy's ouster, we'll see if Johnson does something slimy to save him.

Now that I think about it.  I think Gaetz has floated getting rid of Johnson as well (maybe not directly, it was MTG and Chip Roy), so Johnson can keep the investigation as leverage as well over Gaetz.  Regarding a motion-to-vacate, it wouldn't surprise me if moderate GOP members have already said "If you do this again, we'll just back Jeffries and steal your leverage".

Rep. Matt Gaetz subpoenaed in defamation suit by woman he allegedly had sex with as minor: Sources

Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz on Thursday was served a subpoena to sit for a deposition in a civil lawsuit that involves allegations he had sex with a 17-year old-girl, sources tell ABC News, as part of a suit brought by a friend of the congressman against the young woman and others.

Gaetz was issued the subpoena, which has not been previously reported, by attorneys representing the woman who is now in her 20s and was at the center of a years-long investigation by the Justice Department into allegations that the Florida congressman had sex with her when she was a minor, sources said.

The congressman's deposition is slated for April 5, according to sources, and is part of a sprawling defamation and racketeering lawsuit brought by Gaetz's longtime friend, former Florida House member and lobbyist Chris Dorworth, against the woman and others.

The deposition could see Gaetz asked under oath about his alleged sexual activity with the woman when she was a minor.

"Can confirm that Matt Gaetz has been served for his deposition," John Clune, one of the attorneys for the woman, told ABC News.

A representative for Gaetz did not immediately respond to a request for comment from ABC News.

Matt Gaetz attended 2017 party where minor and drugs were present, woman's sworn statement obtained by Congress claims

The House Ethics Committee is investigating whether or not Rep. Matt Gaetz used illicit drugs as a member of Congress, multiple sources familiar with the committee's work told ABC News.

Committee investigators have inquired about whether Gaetz was under the influence of drugs at parties in Florida after becoming a member of Congress in 2017, according to the sources.

According to a sworn written statement that has been obtained by the Ethics committee, a woman says that in summer of 2017, when she was 20 years old, she attended a party in Florida that Gaetz also attended, which featured alcohol and drugs including cocaine and MDMA, sources familiar with the committee's work told ABC News.

In the sworn statement, which has not been previously reported, the woman said that in addition to Gaetz, the party was attended by the then-minor who was at the center of a yearslong Justice Department investigation into accusations that the Florida Congressman had sex with her when she was 17, according to sources.

According to the statement provided to the committee, sources said the woman who made the statement -- who ABC News is not identifying -- said she saw the then-minor naked at the party, which was also attended by adult men other than Gaetz, and that at the party there allegedly were bedrooms that were made available for sexual activities.

Gaetz has repeatedly denied all wrongdoing, including the allegations that he had sex with a minor. The Justice Department informed Gaetz in 2023 that it was declining to bring charges against him.

Though the statement obtained by Congress references Gaetz, it was not written specifically to the Ethics Committee and is not primarily about the congressman, and the woman does not discuss whether or not she had knowledge of Gaetz's alleged sexual relations with the then-minor, sources said.

When asked if Rep. Gaetz recalled attending the 2017 party, a spokesperson for the Florida Congressman told ABC News, "No." The spokesperson also said "no" when asked if Gaetz has used illicit drugs since becoming a member of Congress.

I care a lot more about how he votes than about how he parties.

Now, having said that?  In the remote chance that news like this would cause the "family values voters" to abandon him?  (I'm not holding my breath.)  I'll take that as good fortune.

DOJ ‘Stonewalling’ House Ethics Committee Probe of Matt Gaetz

As the House Ethics Committee probes allegations that Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) paid for sex with an underage teen, congressional investigators are hitting a wall: the Department of Justice.

The DOJ is “stonewalling” the committee and refusing to turn over relevant information about its own sprawling criminal probe into Gaetz, frustrating the pace of the congressional investigation and leading the committee to seriously consider issuing subpoenas to the feds, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

Currently, the committee has authorized multiple subpoenas to the DOJ for the information but has not served them yet, according to one source. Another source added that it is unusual for the DOJ to push back against the committee to this extent, especially when the relevant investigation isn’t active.

The feds have in the past been willing to pass information to the committee so long as it doesn’t interfere with an active and ongoing investigation—which the Gaetz investigation is not.

Still, it’s not clear whether talks have broken down entirely—or what DOJ’s refusal could ultimately mean for the House probe—but the source indicated that the committee still holds hope that the feds will be more cooperative.
