Year 2 of Collins's contract will be painful, but we'll be able to cut him after that, or perhaps renegotiate him.  Nine million in dead money is painful, but less painful than paying 17 million for a box safety.

A negative long term consequence of this signing is the fact that we redefined safety salaries.  Now they can get paid top cornerback money.  Which in term will raise the cost of corners.  That'll haunt everyone.  And we wonder why the league hates us.

Steve... I think you mean Year 3.

Collins counts 4M and 14M the 1st two years.

Year 3 is 17.2M and really the issue, but Im really not worried about it.

We have Norman, Trent, and Kerrigan all off the books after next year and Alex Smith can be cut at that point as well saving us another 13M.

I assume Kelvin Benjamin will be much cheaper than Tyrell Williams who I've honestly never heard of until this past season...

Kelvin, although seems like an asshole, put up big numbers his first two years in Carolina.

KB is awful at football. No thanks. Can't separate, plays soft at his size, can't catch.

Would take Williams over Kelvin a million times out of a million. I wouldn't take Kelvin Benjamin for free. Kelvin is lazy and out of shape. Bad attitude. Drops. Slow.

It's how you operate when your main goal is to survive until next season.

But you don't get to have job security in any organization when you botch your QB situation as badly as Allen and Gruden have.  No regime deserves a fourth chance there.  Allen, at the very least, should have been put out of his misery by now.  The desperation creates bad decision-making, which leads to more bad decision-making to cope with prior bad decisions.  We are always going to be paying this piper with this FO structure.  They couldn't even get ahead of the curve when Kirk Cousins's unlikely emergence profoundly saved all of their asses the first time they ****ed up.

RG3 predates Gruden.  Gruden came in while he was still around, but he still spent a good chunk of that year injured.  So Gruden's QBs have been Cousins and Smith.  And if the Redskins roster is as inferior as people say then Cousins performance with the Vikings showed he'd have never been the teams savior

Kelvin had a down year and switched teams... still much cheaper than Tyrell Williams and I believe both of them would be a gamble. Don't forget Cam Sims is also on the roster, just ended on IR last year.

Yes to Tyrell Williams in a big way. Immediate #1 on the roster.

I guess he's #1, because he's better than what's here. But he's also a guy that the Chargers had throw up over 1000 yards in 2016 when Keenan Allen went down. And then when Allen came back, the Chargers decided to draft a WR in the top 10 anyway in 2017 to push Tyrell back to #3 at best. Which isn't encouraging if you wanted that guy to be your #1. And at what cost? If Funches can get $10 million, shouldn't Williams get at least $12 million a year?

Preston smith is good against the run, and that’s about it. We can get a good edge rusher in the 2nd or 3rd this year and replace him.

He flashed against the run because that's what we were asking him to do.

It does not break my heart to see him go, but it would not surprise me in the least if he has double digit sacks this year in GB if they use him in a pass rusher role.

I was talking about year three being the one where we cut Collins.  He'll definitely be here year two because that dead cap figure is way too high to cut him then.  But he'll almost certainly be cut or renegotiated year three because 17 million is an untenable cap hit for the position and the savings will be worth the dead cap hit.

I don't like carrying around all of this dead cap money, and pushing pain an offseason or two away.  It keeps us in a cycle of dead cap space and we end up having to let people walk.  Plus I don't want the next regime to be hamstrung in their first and second offseasons by the mistakes of this one.

The cost to me would be Crowder range money... 8-9 mil a year. Williams is a big target, good hands and experienced.

Not an elite WR, but a true #1. The cuts to Brown, McGee and maybe one of the TE's would make this a nice signing.

You cut off Benjamins 2018...

He was good his first two years. Big, young target. Then he got out of shape, then he stopped caring. Trust me I am in Carolina country, I saw and heard plenty of Kelvin.

Also take into the account that Tyrell was the 3rd option, at best. Kelvin was the #1.

This draft is also deep with receivers. No reason to spend lots of cash on a wr in free agency when we can get one cheaper.

My previous post suggested we go WR in round 1, I agree. But Williams will be a guy who gets open more than Doctson & Richardson. Richardson probably cut after next year and Doctson might not be in the league. I'd like to have Williams as the building piece at a price range of 8-10 mill a year on 4 year deal. Still drafting a WR

I added 2018 shortly thereafter

Tyrell as the #1 this year had less than 700 yards. Benjamin was averaging 1000 yards as the #1. He had a down year, didn't start, and was between 2-3 teams this year. Not saying he's the best thing since sliced bread, however, I am saying he's just as much a gamble as Williams is and I certainly wouldn't pay that kind of money to Williams that he's requesting.

Gruden was hired to salvage RGIII's career.  He failed, but RGIII's injuries and Kirk's surprising emergence gave Gruden the mulligan he needed.

He would have been fired years ago if Kirk hadn't become a good starting QB.  Make no mistake, that's what Kirk is.  This roster is not inferior, it's mostly built and we'd be a lot better off today if we had just paid Kirk.  The FO ****ed the dog on that situation and we're still bailing water trying to recover from the mistake.  I know this FO would prefer for fan memory to go back only a couple of months, but It's not lost on me that we couldn't find the money to pay Kirk, but we could find the money to pay Alex Smith and reset the safety market.

Sign Derrick Morgan or Shaq Barrett to replace Smith shortterm with hopes of drafting someone on the edge. Anderson can still play rotational or can play some ILB as well.

Eh, I don't see a point in getting an older short term option to try and start.  Take the training wheels off for Anderson this year.  We need to know what he can do as a starter.  We can go cheaper at OLB and get a vet back up.
