Former Jets backup quarterback Mark Brunell likely to retire

BY Manish Mehta

Mark Brunell admitted on Monday that his 19-year NFL career is likely over.

"Most guys that have trouble leaving the game are in their 20s," Brunell told the Florida Times-Union. "I've been preparing for football to be over with for quite some time."

The free agent quarterback hasn't officially turned in the requisite retirement paperwork to the league, but sounded ready to move on from football.

"I only saw one (football) game each that my two youngest sons played (last year)," said the 41-year-old Brunell. "I don't want to miss any more."

Brunell was drafted by the Packers in 1993 before thriving for the Jaguars for nine seasons. He extended his career with the Redskins, Saints and Jets. After getting a Super Bowl ring in New Orleans, Brunell played the role of backup and mentor to Mark Sanchez for two seasons.

Brunell believes that the Jets can perform well with Sanchez and recently acquired quarterback Tim Tebow.

"Tim and Mark are going to work well together," Brunell said. "I think they complement each other very well. Tim is going to be a great teammate. You can't have enough Tim Tebows on your roster."
