With his strained left Achilles’ tendon failing to respond to treatment, LaRon Landry will finish the year on the injured reserve list for a second consecutive season, casting further doubt on the strong safety’s future with the Washington Redskins.

Landry consulted with foot and ankle specialist Robert Anderson, Coach Mike Shanahan said Thursday, and the doctor recommended that the fifth-year pro have surgery. Shanahan said he expected Landry would seek the opinion of other doctors before making a final decision; he said he wasn’t certain what the procedure would entail.

After having read this quote from Landry I have to admit that I was both stunned and impressed.

“I’m even considering coming here and signing another one-year” contract, Landry said. “Even if I have to come here and sign a one-year just to solidify myself and not have to worry about trying to get the big-dollar [contract this year], I’d do that. Because I admit, this season has been kind of shaky.

“But this would let me come back. . . and show what I’m really capable of doing, which is the only right thing to do in my mind. But I haven’t talked to my agent about this yet. Every time I get ready to call him, I just get frustrated, and then I end up not being able to talk” about his situation.

What a waste of a high draft pick.

Sadly, this is true. How many wasted picks have we had the past 7-8 years? Countless.

Before the season I said something to the effect of, "LaRon needs to step up and be a consistent factor on defense" and I got lambasted like I just criticized God. Fact is he has never been able to string together several games of being a) healthy B) a safety who doesn't miss tackles or have dumb penalties. I'm afraid he is gone, not really worth bringing back.

Good. Great chance to keep on evaluating Gomes.

The big question now is what we do with LaRon this spring. Or rather what LaRon's attitude is when he doubtless finds we're gona' pay him in accordance to his worth, and not what HE thinks his worth is.

Hail.

I say you pay big $$ to Landry included that there's an injury clause. There's no need to not pay Landry big safety money, he's earned it because when he's on the field he's a complete force.

He hasn't earned a darn thing. He had a few good games last year and hasn't done squat this year. He should get mid-tier money with injury clause, and he'll be lucky to even get that. Common misconception with some fans is that his "big muscles" make him a beast on the field... I've seen him bounce off more dudes than actually make tackles, including some tiny WR's, and bite on the double move more than a dozen times. He's DHall's bigger brother... his highlight plays are nice on ESPN, but he gets beat more often than not.

I dunno, I wasn't the biggest Landry fan but I think a lot of posters here are overly negative towards him. On the field I think he's a good player. Top ten draft pick good, maybe not. But the last time he was healthy he was a legitimate contender for defensive player of the year. That isn't something to scoff at.

That season he kept trying to play through ailments and eventually went down with the achilles. He came back this year and fought through injuries again. He could have pulled a Peyton Hillis and saved his body, but he pushed it. I'm sure part of it was wanting to earn the next big contract, but he could have done that by waiting till mid season to start playing and finishing strong.

He's a difference maker when healthy. When healthy, and the way he played under Haslett, I think he is a valuable player. To me it's worth it to franchise him or sign him to a one year deal and see what happens. He clearly was never over the achillies and now he has to take care of it properly.

Is there such thing as an "injury clause" or are you guys just making this up? Never heard of it before and not sure it's legal.

An "injury clause" to me is signing a player to a contract with low guaranteed money. And I think Landry will be able to get decent guaranteed money somewhere so why risk it by signing one where he can get cut?

Let's wait and see how Laron reacts and not simply assume he believes he's worth a ton. I'm sure he knows this is going to clearly affect his value, and if he doesn't, I'm sure his agent has already told him. They'll probably want and accept the franchise tag with one more chance for Laron to show he deserves a big 2nd contract. No one in the league will commit to him long term right now and his best opportunity would be with us.

Yes an injury clause exists...no it's not illegal. Illegal is firing someone because they've been injured and can't physically perform duties. Injury clause translates to still compensating them part of their earned salary - but at a far less rate. For example - Landry will be given his salary - but not large bonuses that make up the majority of his contract. That's exactly what a bonus is - you fulfill it, you can compensated. This is basic stuff right here.

Good post. People are assuming that because Landry is an overly aggressive guy = Landry will tackle the front office and **** on them to get his payday. I'm pretty sure Landry doesn't get shut down right now if the front office believes they won't get him back. The ignorance here is astounding. Shutting him down is an FO move that is smart - it brings his worth down. Not only to us but to the entire league. He's play 1 season and 1 cent in the last 2 seasons worth of games. He should have had surgery in this off-season but he didn't want to risk the amount of danger involved not consulting with team officials during the lockout - unfortunate. Time to deal with the situation.

Keep in mind the facts here.

- Top 10 pick

- Top flight safety

- This team sucks-

- Defense needs him

He's going to break the bank, and he's going to get a giant contract. Compare to this Eric Weddle and Eric Berry's contracts. And has anyone forgotten what the hell a franchise tag is? Or would you rather spend that on the toking tight end.

Also, injured players have full year access to the Redskins training facility. I recall the talking heads on ESPN discussing this in regards to P. Manning. The Colts won't bring him into any games this year, even if he is healthy, because as long as he is designated "injured" then there are no limits on how much time he can spend rehabbing with Colts doctors at Colts facilities in the offseason. The implication was that without the injury designation there are limits. I assume the same will be true for LL.

too common a theme I see is people bashing injured players, saying we should trade them while we can or let them walk, only to come back later and bemoan the Redskins for letting their talent walk. Landry, as a SS in this scheme, when fully healthy, played at a DMVP level. He's willing to comeback on a tag or 1 year deal to prove himself, per the quote of his in this thread. I say give him that chance given his upside when healthy.

Highest Transition Tag for LL (I believe a 1st and 3rd round picks). Get two 2nd rounders for him.

Transition Tag will be used on Davis. IF 30 gets tagged, it'll be the Franchise Tag.

I say IF because it's now believed he may have partially torn either Achilles or the groin.

Everything now depends on if there is a tear & how he rehabs/recovers.

And that's why we should let some other "sucker" blow a stack of cash on him and watch him not live up to the hype.

This franchise can do better.......... :2cents:

Echo your sentiments. I think we need to evaluate the situation post medical diagnosis, and projected prognosis.

Easily would rather spend the money on a proven tight end who is an absolute beast on Sundays. Davis is going to cost pennies compared to what Landry is going to demand. Top flight safety? Landry is nothing except an average safety in the NFL who is turning into Bob Sanders. Besides a half year, the guy has done nothing spectacular in the backfield. I'm sick of people thinking this guy is a stud safety because his arms are big. Guy is garbage and can easily be replaced. Good QB's can make a tight end look godlike and we don't even have a good QB.
