Mr. Sinister
I don't know about regular grocery stores, but I'm pretty sure that they sell lard at farmers market. Try to google one that is reasonably close to you.

gchwood
no shortening is not the same. Shortening is partially hydrogenized vegetable oil. Lard is specifically pig fat. Very big difference in taste and fat contents. You can usually find lard at any ethnic grocer.
renaissance
Any good Hispanic market or a grocery store in an area w/ a large Hispanic population. In the grocery store I've always seen it near the meat/butcher section.

Destructis
I was looking for chicken broth the other day at the grocery store. Every freaking can and box said "Fat Free" ....really? WTF? I want the damn fat in it for flavor. The US is too health conscious these days. I do try to eat better, but sometimes we need to be able to eat some crap. More than likely chicken broth has always been fat free, they just figured out you can label it that way and people will buy it more.
