Bang
Dude is not gonna improve. He is what he is.Your so sure about that? Well if he makes his NEXT attempt, he has improved. Step back, and relax. The kicker is not that big of an issue, and unless he completely tanks, I suspect Shanny and Allen will give him some time. He was pretty good in the pre-season, but those types of things must make no difference in the knee jerk reactions of extremskins. One attempt, and he missed. Next attempt, he just might make it. Oh my gosh, that's improvement. Well, he may very well be a large issue. We lost how many close games last year? he missed how many kicks? This is not a team that has the luxury of just giving away 3 points every time he chokes. He absolutely MUST get better. He's here now,, Danny Smith yet again failed to find anyone to compete with him, he once again failed to address the issue of ten misses from the sason before. I have no idea what Gano's problem is,, if it's mental, if it's coaching, of it's just nerves.. whatever. But it's his coach that needs to figure it out, and he needs to figure it out yesterday. Having to rely on Danny Smith to coach him up isn't leaving me very optimistic. ~Bang
Hunter_R
Well, he is 24 years old.And in reality, right now he's 0-1. .000 Nowhere to go but up. ~Bang Where did you stand with Durant Brooks? Now, granted, he sucks, but nobody "knew" he would always suck. Six games into his rookie year seemed a bit short to run him out of town.
jaydogg3eb
And some of you think that we can A- Find a better kicker tomorrow, B- have that kicker have a better percentage, and C- Gano will never improve.Very Snyderlike. Always want the shiny new toy, not willing to develop your own. I think kicker is one of the positions where you don't have to develop your own. Kickers can play until they're about 45 years old, so they don't need to be developed in the same way other players do. Find a guy, any guy, who can consistently make the 30-45 yarders and you keep him. Anything over 45 yards is never automatic if you ask me. So this "lez develops our own playerz likes the steelerz and patriotz do!!!!" argument doesn't work here imo.
Skins Wingman
what is there to develop with a kicker? they dont have to learn plays, schemes, reads, etc, etc... just kick a damn ball through an upright is all they have to do. either you can or u cant. Pretty much exactly what I wanted to say. Not sure why the hell anyone would spend multiple seasons trying to "develop" their own kicker. I think people just get so enamored with the idea of being able to brag to their friends about how "we found him first" or "we made this guy a star" blah blah blah. **** that. Get the best kicker you can find and go from there.
Sekhmet728
Nobody knows what the future holds for Gano. He's been inconsistent at best in his ~17 games to be sure. I'd still hold that sticking to Gano for at least the near future has a better upside than going back to the kicker carousel we've had going for the past decade and change. Six games into his rookie year seemed a bit short to run him out of town. Durant Brooks is part of the reason why I always turn this topic back to Danny Smith. He's failed to find his specialists. Wasn't Brooks a 4th round pick? What a waste. He either failed to identify that Brooks was a putz, or he failed to develop him into what he thought was there when the pick was made. In the beginning I hoped Brooks would be good, but he quickly showed otherwise, and to be fair, part of the reason is the rest of the special teams suck right along with him. I haven't always had this distaste for Smith.. but over the last two seasons it's become increasingly apparent that our ST are not getting better, and he's the sole consistent factor. Brandon Banks is the exception. This is Smith's bright spot. (So long as penalties don't wipe out his returns.) ~Bang ---------- Post added September-12th-2011 at 08:55 PM ---------- what is there to develop with a kicker? they dont have to learn plays, schemes, reads, etc, etc... just kick a damn ball through an upright is all they have to do. either you can or u cant. I tend to agree. Being as this has been Gano's only attempt of the season, I'm not throwing in the towel on him yet. But overall they are what they are. Timing needs to be developed with holder and snapper. Other than that, he's in his own world. ~Bang
TheLongshot
Of course, there's no reason to be optimistic, it's nothing but blind faith at this point. He misses long, he misses short, he misses mid-range. He has shown absolutely nothing to suggest that he can, or will get better. I'm all for developing young players, but you don't waste YEARS developing a friggin kicker, let alone one who has been as bad as Gano. I like how a guy who has been here a season and change has changed to "years". One thing people here forget about is that Gano had three holders last year, and Hunter the Punter got cut because of a couple of misses. So, yeah, I do see room for improvement. bowhunter
Didn'y anyone see the moving shot on the replay screen behind the goal posts before/during the kick??? It was almost as if the Screen operator was trying to make Gano miss. That screen should be turned to a blank screen during our FG attempts. Please someone go back and watch the replay of the game, that was terrible!!!!

GoDeep81
Dudes a choke artist.. You can't miss that kick yesterday, period.. Middle of the field, at home, no wind, basic chip shot.. Wide right.. Seen this movie too many times last year.. Didn'y anyone see the moving shot on the replay screen behind the goal posts before/during the kick??? Kicker should be looking at the ball when he kicks it, not at the goal posts or score board.. Just sayin..
2v2nv
The OL scares me half the time, he scares me 100% of the time. You know you have to think about other options when you get nervous on the PAT. All of these butt clencher positions will be fixed in future years. We apparently had bigger problems this FA and draft than that this year.

Skins Wingman
we need a kicker who is automatic from 30-39 yds. all our kickers seemed to have trouble in that range. ill take that over 50+ anyday. we dont need a kicker with a huge leg

I didn't say Gano has been here for years, although he has been on the team since 2009. I said you don't give a kicker years, especially if he's the worst in the league. Giving him the rest of the season to "develop" would make it years, and is a preposterous idea. He's a kicker, not a quarterback taken with a top-10 draft pick. justice98
It WOULD have been nice to see 31 points on the board yesterday... I just hope Gano doesn't screw us over in a close one. There's no reason to think he won't. The odds are good for a guy that misses as many kicks as he does. Or that he'll make games close that shouldn't be by missing kicks. If you make kicks early, the kicks late might not be with the game on the line.
Skins Wingman
since we miss fg anyway, we should just drop the kicker all together and activate another WR.. let rocco do all the kicking duties lmao.. jk
garyclarkforhall
Would you like Janikowski now? Oakland stuck with him through a few rough years and I think it has really paid off for them. He was under 70% in his first year and 82 and 78% the following years... I think a little patience will be good here, although NOT too much patience for another ten miss season.
