Sikbug
Without this "welfare" that you speak of, the debt could be paid down rather quickly with those "taxes" that would have already been paid. Let's be serious though, that debt is never going to go away no matter what we do lol.
CrypticVillain
Because the welfare system is obviously being abused just like every government program it seems. I have no problem with my tax dollars going to somebody that really needs the assistance but its people like you with that mindset abusing the system. This I said it before in the Drug Testing for Welfare and food stamps drug testing thread and I am going to say it again. There are a lot of people on public assistance in my neighborhood. A good 90% of them are LAAAAAAZY!!! I don't look down on welfare, it is a good program when used the right way. But around here, people are having like five kids just so they can receive checks. Then they don't take care of them and wonder why they are so bad. (different topic for a different day  )
Conn
Chief, people "look down upon" welfare because of people like you. Because of the rampant abuse of the system that takes place. Where the **** do you think the money for welfare comes from, anyways? I'm not going to expect you to know, since you originally thought that the government controlled gas prices (before you amended your stance on that...kinda. Its still apparent that you have no idea how that works). I don't mind welfare. I don't mind my taxes going towards welfare. For people who NEED it. People with a mindset like yours*, who justify their laziness by imagining themselves to be victims of a ruthless government, make me sick. Like you're ****ing Robin Hood, taking from the rich, mean old government and giving to the "poor" (yourself--heavy use of sarcasm) by taking advantage of the system in a completely shameless way. Get over your self-pity, grow a god damn spine, and have some pride in yourself, man. Have some pride in what you do, what you earn, your family, and most importantly, your role in providing for yourself and your family. When the hell did it become not only acceptable, but preferable to receive never-ending handouts, needed or not? Even the people who DO need foodstamps/EBT and welfare, ideally, would be ashamed of it and only use it as long as absolutely necessary. Then, welfare can go to the RIGHT people, who will get off the system once they're back on their feet. Which is how the system is supposed to work. Its not "Social-Securty-lite" for lazy people. *note: I know that you said you'd still have this mindset even if you were rich. I'm not saying that YOU are lazy or a loser with no pride. I'm saying that you have that mindset, which unfortunately plagues many people who ARE in a position to take advantage of a well-meaning system. mardi gras skin
Honestly, no matter how rich I get, if I figure out how to attain food stamps, I would do it. **** the government, I will gladly let them pay for my food. Well, sure, but you feel that way about everyone in your life right? No matter how rich you get, if you can figure out how to mooch off other people, I'm sure you'd do it. **** your neighbors, you'll gladly let them pay for your food. pointyfootball
As many have said, Americans are mostly a compassionate lot and most of us want/expect those who are truly in need to receive help. It's those who are continually in need that do nothing to improve their station in life and see government assistance as their right that draw people's ire, IMO. That being said, it's hard to get upset at individuals with food stamps when you have ultra-rich people taking government handouts: Take, for example, NFL owners blackmailing legislatures with "we'll move if you don't give us money" threats: http://apse.dallasnews.com/contest/2002/writing/over250/over250.enterprise.fourth1.html "Trumpeting the concept of partnership to win public support, NFL owners have secured $4.4 billion in taxpayer dollars since 1995 for 21 new or renovated stadiums. Though teams have represented their combined contribution as about $2 billion, a Times-Picayune study shows their actual out-of-pocket expenses were no more than half that." Or farm subsidies: http://www.nypress.com/article-21342-the-making-of-manhattans-elite-welfare-farmers.html "William Lesse Castleberry, a tax attorney who oversees levered buyouts, received $133,680 in cotton subsidies through an Arkansas farm. Mary W. Heller, a photographer with a studio on East 74th Street, got $143,783 via a farm in Kansas for growing wheat and sorghum. William Philip Walsh, who recently purchased a $2.9 million luxury condo with interior design done by Armani, was paid $212,463 to not farm his land. " My point is there is a lot of welfare, not all of it going to people we see as "lazy and unmotivated".

Riggins77
First off, food stamps/WIC/EBT cards etc. are funded by the state governments if Im not mistaken, not Federal. Medicare is funded by the Federal Government. Each state has it's own eligibility process on who qualifies for Medicaid, food stamps, etc. I am not against helping others, however, if you have ever worked in a grocery store, in a low income area where a lot of your customers pay in food stamps you would know why some or a lot of people are against it. When I was 18 years old, working at a ghetto groc. store, it was nothing for me to load up two carts full of groceries into a brand new Lincoln Continental Town car with the order paid for in food stamps. I drove a beat up piece of **** car with no paint hardly. That's not the reason why Im skeptical about it, because they could have been buying their grandparents groceries (someone who actually needs assistance) for them. I saw first hand how easy it is to abuse the system. I worked with a girl that was getting some assistance, cash for non-food and food stamps. Her and her boyfriend both worked, trying to make a better life for themselves. They had one child and then she got pregnant again. One day she turns in her two week notice. I ask her why she was quiting (she was one of our hardest workers) and she said that her social worker told her that if she quits her job, she will get more "free stuff" aka assistance than she would working because of taking out taxes. So we have Social Workers encouraging people to settle for all they can get instead of trying to get out of a hole and free up the money for other people that may need it. Great system we have here. I do know some people that used it for what it was attended for, assistance until they could create a better life for themselves and their families. This I have no problem with. Thiebear
I expect my tax dollars to help those that have gotten fired/layed off/medical catastrophe. (Its what we do as humans). 13weeks = no problem 99weeks = seems a bit much but its hard times. fraud/waste and abuse should be tight and strict as you are stealing from the weak and vulnerable. I see spectacular raids once every year or two, but for the same reasons after millions are lost. DRsmith: I hate/hate/hate Walmart, but I'd take a job there tomorrow if i was fired today. Their pay scale is above federal minimum, they have what seems like a enormous amount of associates walking the floor. 8+hr cashier avg., 43k asst mgr, pharmacist making tons from their uplifted thrones . (those same people are at Target or Sears or A&P or Kmart or Denny's). Walmart also hires more women than men? Isn't that supposed to fix the injustices of the past? Riggins above nailed it: You work as a cashier or private in the army or rookie in the police force. And then you work your way up with experience. I know a few people that make 'enough' to just not try. Then drink my good beer.

greenspandan
Why is Welfare Looked Down Upon? because people born into privilege prefer to delude themselves into thinking they got where they are solely on the basis of their own merits and hard work.
