Conn
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=5979522 Uh oh for the Chiefs. A person familiar with the decision says Florida Gators has hired former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis as offensive coordinator. The person, who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the move has not been formally announced, says it will made public Monday. Weis, hired at Notre Dame five years ago when Urban Meyer turned the Irish down to come to Gainesville, is currently the offensive coordinator for the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs. Their offense was just getting on track. Might not be good for Cassel, who they were just getting their money's worth out of, Bowe, Charles, Moeaki , or anyone else on that offense. Then again, they could hire someone who will run the same system, basically, and not skip a beat. Maybe someone already on staff. But they don't strike me as a team with that type of strong identity/foundation. Maybe Pioli has changed that. Its also interesting, because the Chiefs were finally having success after rebuilding, and are going to the playoffs, with a bright future ahead...and Weis would rather dump that for a downward-trending Florida Gators organization...and its not even a HC job. Must really like the college game better than the NFL.
Hiro
That is a bit perplexing. Maybe Haley and Weis were bumping heads over offensive philosophies? Or maybe Florida paid him a ton of cash?
Bubble Screen
Count me among those that doesn't quite get this move. Odd timing, imo.
Conn
Count me among those that doesn't quite get this move. Odd timing, imo. Probably why it had to be leaked to get out, right now. He probably didn't want it out until the Chiefs were done in the playoffs. Wonder how this effects the players, knowing the steps forward their offense took this year, and that their coach won't be back no matter what they do in the playoffs. HailGreen28
How about KC hiring McDaniels to take Weis' place?
Conn
How about KC hiring McDaniels to take Weis' place? Wouldn't be surprised AT ALL, given the Pioli connection. That would be the ultimate recent Belichick "offspring" setup And it just might keep enough continuity to continue the progress they've been making on offense. jflow78
I don't get this either. Maybe Haley runs KC like Belichick runs New England and Weis wants more authority. Who knows.
Bubble Screen
How about KC hiring McDaniels to take Weis' place? That's actually a pretty good idea. I could easily see that happening.
ArmchairRedskin
I'm not sure Haley and McD get along. Remember the handshake?
WhoRUSupposed2Be
I certainly did not understand this at all.
FanboyOf91
I'm not sure Haley and McD get along. Remember the handshake? Good point, especially since it was after his team getting pounded by McDaniels.
DWinzit
This struck me as odd also. Mort just stated on ESPN that Weis and Haley were both very headstrong and probably butted heads.
rockfan7224
Ya, count me in as being perplexed at the move. I'd be interested to find out the reasons why. It seems strange

visionary
Seems awfully strange. I wonder what the pay difference is.
Hubbs
Very weird. And yeah, KC is definitely the natural landing spot for the Boy Genius.
ibarramedia
This does not make sense to me. Why would weis go back to coach in college in the same position after 1 year in the NFL and in the playoffs? I could understand if it was for the head coaching job. Heisenberg
My first guess would be that Florida through a ton of money at him. A guy I met up in Foxboro used to know Weis and said he was always complaining about being underpaid when he was with the Pats.
Spartacus87
Two things: 1- Weis is known as a pretty big egomaniac about his offenses. And Haley obviously has an offensive background, but so does Kansas City's Assistant Head Coach Maurice Carthon, and when everything is mixed together, Weis is professional enough to make that work but it's not his ideal set-up. Meanwhile, Will Muschamp wanted an OC at Florida who would handle the offense entirely on his own. So Weis now gets to run his side of the ball and be left alone to do it. 2- Weis' son, Charlie Weis Jr., is a senior in high school and will be at UF next year as a student assistant on the football team. So Weis is able to try to run his offense in college again while being around his family. It's still a bit strange, but there are some factors there that clear it up a little. Lombardi's_kid_brother
It's possible that nobody likes working for Haley. (I wrote that before I saw that blistering by Whitlock. Yikes).
