Sen. Bernard Sanders, I-VT, is on the floor of the Senate right now to — in his office's words — "speak as long as possible against a tax deal between the White House and congressional Republicans."

C-SPAN.org has streaming coverage here. He's been going for about 90 minutes now.

Larry, I suspect there are many who only care that he is standing up. He is actually doing what many only threaten.

If I were a betting man, I wouldplace my money on "He talks till a decision is reached for the Senators to go home for the weekend."

If there is a follow up bet, I would take the "There is no filibuster come Monday."

Oh, given my opinion of Congress (abysmal) I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't simply a case of "I could block this thing by putting my name on the 'filibuster' list, but then I won't be on TV".

I wouldn't have trouble with "Hey, Frank, everybody here wants to go home for the weekend. You mind filling up TV time between now and 5:00, so the rest of us can beat the traffic? We'll make it up to you."

I don't think that's right.

In case you didn't know, Bernie Sanders is an Independent because he really is a socialist. Its not because he's a moderate. Of course, its hard to win running as a socialist, but I think he'll admit that he believes in socialism (like any European). I think he's filibustering it because he thinks its a stupid bill, and he just decided he's going down swinging. I just don't think he has much behind his punches.

For them to call a vote, Sanders would have to yield the floor, which he hasn't yet.

So, you think he's planning on talking for the next two months? Like old days? Is that how it always works now?

Wow - Dems REALLY F-d this one up....

What they COULD have done....

Passed a bill in the house that kept all tax breaks in place except for those making over a million (They did)

Push it on the floor (Which they didn't under THREAT of fillibuster), forced the republicans to actually DO a fillibuster. News everywhere would be repubs are fillibusting a tax bill and if they continue with THEIR fillibuster, taxes will raise for everyone...

Instead - They do this crap, push it forward, and are now forcing a dem fillibuster that everyone will see as the DEMS blocking a bill that will now lead to higher taxes for all.....

My God - Who runs this party?

sadly, i totally agree, and the blame seems to lie at obama's feet. i think anthony weiner nailed it when he said this president punted on third down. GROW A PAIR, OBAMA.

They are saying if there's 60 votes for cloture, then he's got 30 hours of filibustering before the vote.

He's outraged about tax cuts for the rich because they are doing just fine. He's talking about the need to invest into our infrastructure, workforce training, etc.

Strom Thurmond has the record for longest filibuster. Almost 24 hours exactly if I remember correctly. It was over the '57 Civil Rights Act. He started reading from phonebooks at one point.

On a sidenote, Liberal Democrats have really started to annoy me. They're acting like children.
