Kilmer17
"If you send a kid to [public] school in D.C., chances are that they will end up in a gang rather than graduating," Im pretty sure the stats back up that statement.
Rdskn4Lyf21
"Spin - twist and turn so as to give an intended interpretation" I found this quote by him, but not anything like what you said in the title. Maybe I missed it :whoknows: "If you send a kid to [public] school in D.C., chances are that they will end up in a gang rather than graduating." I call bull****. You got a link? I think while the dropout rate in DC is ridiculous, dropping out doesn't always mean joining a gang. Hell I'm pretty sure most of the time it doesn't. I know I got my GED and I joined the Army, not a gang.

Redskins Diehard
Nice choice for a thread title. I saw a website that put the grad rate at 57%. Would have been smarter to say as likely to drop as to graduate. Gang member comment gives people ammunition to ignore the substance of the argument. Midnight Judges
:doh:I support the voucher program, but DeMint's not doing the supporters any favors here. Agree. Very stupid thing to say. If he retracts and apologizes to the people of Washington DC I think he should be forgiven. On a related note, it would be good to see some real data on this. shk75
I would put anything on the line that the vast majority of kids in public school are not in gangs. Do you understand what public school entails. You wanna tell me that most kids in school (kindergarten through high school) are in gangs. No. I went to public school in NE DC and while there were gang members no doubt, the vast majority of people were not gang memebrs.
Kilmer17
Obama said the same thing. http://www.barackobama.com/2007/07/18/remarks_of_senator_barack_obam_19.php And yet here, on the other side of the river, every other child in Anacostia lives below the poverty line. Too many do not graduate and too many more do not find work. Some join gangs, and others fall to their gunfire. The original title is misleading and inflamatory. Demint is saying the same thing that Obama is saying. Grad rates are too low. And as a result, these kids are more likely to join a gang or commit a crime. That's not the same thing and Obama is only talking about one part of DC. No one is denying kids join gangs.
shk75
Ok Kilmer that is just comical what you posted. Obama said some kids join gangs...of course they do no crap. DeMint says chances are if you send your kid to a DC public school he will join a gang...that means he is saying most kids in DC public schools are in gangs. The two are not even close to related. Renegade7
I don't know if this man was over exagerrating or just plain ignorant, but it's true that DC public schools have some of the highest drop-out rates in the country. I used to go to DC public schools and my mom used to teach at a couple, so she's seen the decrepit schools and I've seen the books as old as me. You have a lot more people losing faith in themselves and the system the older they get. Rhee is doing a helluva job trying to turn that system around, but she needs more help. There is so much going wrong in DC that there is no magic silver bullet for, but there's only so much the students, parents, DC can do realisticly. I agree. I remember riding on the bus to play a basketball game at a charter school in DC...as we passed the public highschool close to it, we saw a crime scene investigation going on because someone had been shot and killed on the blacktop at the public school...I think I remember them saying it was gang related. We went back and played another bball game in DC at a crappy "charter" school and some people ran on the floor to fight us during the game...we had to get a police escort from the building because there were threats of gangs with guns waiting for us outside. btfoom
I don't think that more kids join gangs than graduate, but I also know that DC schools are a failure to most. Until the local politicians and school system get serious about improving the conditions and not trying to defend their current state/attack critics, they won't get any better. DC schools really need to get rid of the kids who don't want to be there and cause problems. Unfortunately, there is no political will to do so. I feel for the kids who really try to learn in that situation.

shk75
DC public schools graduate about 60% of their freshman:http://nces.ed.gov/programs/coe/2008/pdf/21_2008.pdf Its actually almost %70 in that chart in 2004-05. This is the problem with DeMint you have some politician just spouting off at the mouth with no empirical data whatsoever. He is not from DC and has no kids in the public schools here. He is just generalizing and has no idea what actually happens since the news and everything else in this country only focuses on the negative and not the positive. Like the above poster who says well I agree with him because I experienced two incidents in my life realting to gangs in DC public schools so the rest must be the same. IF you look at the FACTS...more than 50% graduate. Therefore he said more kids join gangs than graduate which means more than %50 must be in gangs right. Now how would you like your crow served.
