Washington State: Parents sue over highschool daughters nude photo

It's a shame that as a society Puritanism still runs so deep that it continues to contaminate our minds into thinking that nudity equates to porn.

Well, there is an obvious need to protect children from being taken advantage of by adults with nefarious intentions. (Which is why these sorts of pictures are illegal in the first place.)

With regard to them being kicked off the cheer squad:

1) As a previous poster stated, whoopity freakin do- it's cheerleading

2) The school probably got involved with regard to kicking them off the cheer squad because (as someone else also already mentioned) most of those teams have morality standards that the members must sign and abide by. You don't really want someone representing your school and your community that has done something that would embarrass everyone involved.

It always amazes me how many people comment without reading the article.

Did anyone see why mom and dad were upset? Hint - It wasn't that their daughter was kicked off Cheer. From The article-

In early August, school officials received the nude photo in question in the mail in an unmarked envelope and via text message from an individual they refuse to identify, according to court documents.

But school officials did not contact the girls, her parents until August 26 and the police department until August 29, despite the fact a nude photograph of minors were being circulated among the public, the suits allege. Furthermore, the parents claim school officials shared the photo - a form of child pornography - among each other without permission.

"They should have spoken to and called us. We're just very upset they never addressed those issues with us," she said.

I'm with the mom and dad. My daughter sends a nude pic to her BF, I'm mad at her and she is in trouble. I find out that the school knew about the pictures, didn't tell me for weeks, and PASSED IT AROUND! - You bet your A** I'm going after the school.

A teen does stupid things and it would be my job to make sure they regret it and learn from it. A adult should know better, and if there is doubt, Notify the mom and dad 1st!

here is another article from the Seattle Post....http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/388940_bothell22.html?source=mypi

something I found in this article that is VERY interesting.

One of the photos was taken three years ago, according to court documents. Showing the girl topless, it was sent to her then-boyfriend's phone in the summer of 2005. Later that summer, the picture accidentally was distributed to other Bothell High students, according to her lawsuit.

The other teen's photo was taken in June, when she and a fellow cheerleader used their cell phones to each snap photos of themselves naked, according to her lawsuit. Those photos were later accidentally sent to other Bothell High students, though King said it was unclear how that happened.

So basically one girl was problaby 14 or 15 when the first photo was taken....

Then the reasons for them being kicked off the Cheer squad...

Northshore officials, however, believe the girls clearly violated the district's athletic code, which students must agree to in order to participate in school activities. The girls understood that as athletes, they would be held to higher standards of behavior, Stoltzfus said.

"When you sign up to be a cheerleader -- or for any student activity -- you agree to certain codes of behavior," she said. "We consider them student leaders, and we want them to be role models."

Good idea to click the link for the ENTIRE article...:silly:

Regarding a reason why the parents are mad.....another exerp from the Seattle PI article..

Attorney Matthew King, who represents both families, said it also was troubling that the teens were punished, but football players and other students at the school who sent or received the texts were not.

"We're not technically challenging the sanctions as being too strict, we're saying they weren't evenly enforced across the school," King said. "There should have been some punishment meted out to those who were in possession of the photos. ... It seems like the girls are getting the brunt of it."

Agreed there is no reason what so ever that the school should pass the pictures around.

To wait nearly a month before the parents were notified is ridiculous.

The girls should be punished but so should the school for how they handled this

That's what I mean. Why is the school jumping in on this? Doesn't have anything to do with the school or with cheerleading.

When I got caught for being drunk out of my mind in high school, I got in trouble with my parents. But I didn't get kicked off the Chess team. :geek:

You sound as old as I do. Times have changed. Back when we were in school, the main job of the teacher was to teach and the main job of the school was to make sure we learned. Now, everyone is in everyone elses business and with Facebook, Myspace, et al, it makes it so easy for schools to hold people accountable for their actions outside of the classroom.

Right here in Charlotte there is a teacher who could lose her job because she said something like she teaches a bunch of "ghetto kids." Then another teacher came to her defense and he was found to have lewd pictures of drinking and women on his page and could face disciplinary actions. With all the technology of texting, sending pictures and the internet, there is no where to hide anymore. This site is the furthest I will go with my identity. I have no Myspace or Facebook page. I'm to old for that crap and my life is not that interesting anyway.

Thrown off the cheer squad seems alittle much for this particular incident. It appears they were joking around, and one wasn't thinking.

Actions that don't directly affect the team, is IMO not worthy of school punishment.

IMO this would be like the girls doing something stupid at home with regard to the parents realm and the school stepping in and suspending them for it.

If this happened on campus, or during a school sponsored event, or involved the cheer squad, than you've got something.

isnt the school involving themselves by suspending the girls?

Guys, when you play for a school or cheer you are representing that school. You are held to high standards. It is bringing negative attention towards said school. They got what they deserved. And if its illegal to send the pic like she did, then suffer the consequences. I have zero sympathy for any of those involved.

Not trying to defend either side in any extent, but consider this. How many administrators do you know that sit in the school in early august? In Fairfax County, I remember most high school teachers didn't really return until mid-August. The administrators, maybe a little earlier, but there's tons of affairs to get in order before the year starts.

How often has anyone neglected anything semi-minor here during a particularly busy time, like say tax season or fiscal year end for an accountant, or a major court date for a lawyer? I'm sure it also took the school officials some time before they came to a conclusion on what to do. Revealing something liek this gives a negative impression on the school, and the county if it's a public school.

Now if they were sitting around passing the pics around and laughing for a month, then that's a different story entirely.

Also, I think the school acted properly. Dismissing the girls was the proper thing to do. I'm sure we can cite many college and NFL cheerleaders for being suspended for less actually. (Chris Cooley privately having sex with two of them, the ASU girl just having some risque party photos up, the Pats cheerleader just drawing some "things" on people). The football team shouldn't really be penalize for acting like harmless little boys.

I hate lazy journalism. The editor needs to be fired. They keep misspelling the name of the high school. It's not Bothell. It's Brothel. Geez. Is that so hard? Brothel HS.

Edit: Shoot! Didn't read back far enough and someone beat me to the joke.

Yeah incase no one said it yet.. This thread is useless without pics..

AND... Why is it the schools fault here? And why is this chicks mom so delusional? She didn't forget to erase the picture.. She never wanted to erase it and the mom seemed to be ok that her daughter was making porn and sending it to her boyfriend.. I didn't think you could sue because your daughter was a stupid slut.

I call bull**** on both of the red, bold, underlined statements.

How do you accidentally send a nude photo text to multiple students? You don't.

It was useless without them until you showed up with that sig and got the dirty little gears in our heads spinning.

I may laugh and joke, but what is up with these dirty little whores these days? How do I teach and keep my daughters from doing stupid **** like this. Times have changed. "lipstick parties", "bracelets"? Not to be filthy, but this whole anal acceptance thing among the young people freaks me out. Since when is that OK? I don't know. When I was in highschool you even touch that spot you might not talk for a week. I don't want my girls to be whores.:(
