This is such a great album. The track "Lost" is amazing (both versions) and the rest of the album is on par. There is a little of everything and I would highly recommend giving it a listen. I just with it was a bit longer especially after a three year wait.

Haven't heard the album yet but have heard nothing but good things about it.

Going to have to give it a listen.

Oh, um, here's some bad things to hear about it:

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/51286-viva-la-vida-or-death-and-all-his-friends

(from the review--linked above--^):

Earlier this year, Britons voted Coldplay as The Band Most Likely to Put You to Sleep. The poll, conducted by hotel chain Travelodge, had Chris Martin & Co. beating out aural Ambien including James Blunt and Norah Jones. Even for a band known to take solace in their overarching pleasantness, the drowsy coronation doubled as a harsh insult. After all, Coldplay is a rock band. A grandma-friendly, Radiohead-normalizing, disarmingly polite rock band led by a man who sounds like he's still yearning for puberty perhaps...but a rock band nonetheless.

Translation: Coldplay sucks.

I don't understand why 'ghey" is used? How did that start? Is that what the college kids say now? Why would it be "ghey" to listen to Coldplay? Help me understand.

Well 'ghey' is an internet or ES thing.

And the quote "You know how I know you're gay...you listen to Coldplay" is from the movie 40 Year Old Virgin.

Just jokes.

Ahh ok..yeah love that flick but don't remember when it was said. Was it when he was going through the porn collection and looking around the apartment?

I just bought this album and listened to a few tracks on the way home. Sounds a little different than the X&Y album to me so far. I'll be back on later with a full review I suppose. I don't really get how people compare Coldplay with bands like U2 and Radiohead all the time, I'm not a U2 or Radiohead fan at all but my favorite band is Coldplay. Their sound is unique and I'm thinking by the posts on this board, you either love them or hate them.

My only complaint so far... The cases they sell this CD in, if that's what you could even call it. More like a paper shroud for the CD if you ask me.

I haven't listened to the new album yet, and I really have nothing against them musically. I think their music is actually more interesting than U2's because the melodies are catchier.

But a lot of their music structure really does sound like they're 70% U2, and they've even gone as far as to show up in an Apple commercial that looks and sounds insanely similar to U2's commercials from a few years ago. Right down to the tribal drum, the lead singer's look, his poses and outfit (in silhouette). Even the song could have been written by U2.

I honestly had to wait until the end of the ad to figure out whether Apple was running out of ideas, or airing a too-late parody of their U2 ads. You know, the lights suddenly switch on in the studio and it turns out that the smooth singing voice belongs to Gilbert Gottfried or Eugene Levy (who really can play and sing, by the way).

I agree, don't see the U2 comparison. I especially liked Coldplay's first 2 albums and several tracks off XY and I'll admit it's not exactly party music.

I'll be interested to hear this, although the track in the Apple commercial to too poppy for my taste.

I didn't really like that Coldplay did an Apple commercial, feels like selling out to me. Every big band has to do it sometime I guess. I thought that (Viva La Vida) was the better of the two songs released before the album. I'm about to listen to the whole album and will be back later to give everybody who doesn't want to be punched in the nuts after listening to Coldplay the rundown.

Here it is, I've listened to the entire album 2 times through and had a couple of Cap'n and Cokes...

The official SpringfieldSkins "Viva la Vida" Review:

This album is definitely different from the other 3 Coldplay albums in my opinion. There is an obvious influience on the band from all over the world. I would have to say "A Rush of Blood to the Head" is still my favorite. "Viva la Vida" is a good album, it's different but still good. So, I'll give a track by track rundown, from beginning to end. The ratings are from 1 to 5 with 5 being the best, with an honest opinion from a Coldplay fan.

1- Life in Technicolor: 4

This is an intro song. It's good, but it's still an intro song. There are no lyrics, just screaming, chanting or whatever you want to call it. The song has a good feel though and the instrumentals are nice. It also is the same instrumental as the last song if you care to listen to this CD on repeat.

2- Cemeteries of London: 3

The song is OK in my opinion. There are subtle mixing of drums from the following song, which I think is pretty cool. The vocals and instrumentals are catchy. I like the lyrics. The song is OK.

3- Last!: 5

This song is awesome. I love the drums and organ playing on this song. It sounds nothing like the usual Coldplay (kudos to the girlfriend on that comment). This could possibly be the best song on the CD. This is a song I couldn't get tired of, the drums (which sound tribal) are awesome. The lyrics and vocals are very good too. Download this song if you pick and choose what you listen to.

4- 42: 4

I really like the intro to this song, or the beginning of this song rather. It sounds rather Beatle like to me. The instrumentals are pretty damn good. It's a nice easy going song in the beginning, mixed up in the middle with a guitar solo. The guitar solo is kind of reminiscent of Radiohead if you ask me (eventhough I think the two bands sound nothing alike). It's still a good song.

5- Lovers in Japan/Reign of Love: 2

This is really two songs. There is a definite first part and definite last part. The first part is OK and as a stand alone I would give it a 3. The first part has a little bit of a folk feel to it along with a good message. The second part is rather doo doo and as a stand alone I would have rated it a 1. The second part has some nice easy going pianos if that is what you like but I find it rather soft. The second part of this song is boring as hell.

6- Yes: 4

Another 2 parter. The first song is pretty good. It has a darker melody and vocals very reminiscent of "Parachutes" or "A Rush of Blood to the Head". The vocals are very good and I like the sounds of the subtle strings during the melody. There is also some rather Indian sounding instrumentals in the first song as well. My girl seems to think this would be a nice song to "get freaky" to. The second song on the track has a good sound and a nice melody, however Chris Martin's lyrics are hardly understandable on the second song here. It's rather annoying when you have to go to lyrics.com to find out what he's saying.

7- Viva la Vida: 5

So far, the best song on this album. Everything in this song is awesome. The vocals, the strings, the synth, it's all good. The lyrics are great, make for quite a thinker if you're actually paying attention. This should've been the first major release from this album rather than a 30 second snippet on an iPod commercial. This song is great, no doubt about it.

8- Violet Hill: 4

This song is the first major release from this album. It's a good song, but when compaired with "Viva la Vida" (both of which I heard at the same time) one is clearly better than the other. This song also harkens back to the Coldplay of old ("Parachutes" and "A Rush of Blood to the Head"). The piano, guitars and bass are all great on this song. The more I hear this song, the more I like it. It's a good song, not the best on the album though.

9- Strawberry Swing: 3

It's hard to pinpoint the influence and sound of this song, is it folk or country? The vocals are good, I like the lyrics especially as the song gets moving along about halfway through. I like the subtle strings or guitar plucks in the melody, they make the sound to me. Did I mention I like the lyrics, makes me feel all soft and nice on the inside.

10- Death and All His Friends: 2

The start to this song is slow, even for a Coldplay song. The piano is nice and all, but it's still a bit lacking. The vocals are OK, but it's just a bit slow moving for me. The second half of this song changes up to a nice "extro" that will lead into the beginning of the album.

Good review Springfield, I'm pretty much on board with everything you said.

Good album, not their best but I think it's a good step in the right direction for them.

X&Y was good but at the same time I think they needed to explore their sound a bit and X&Y sounded like a band getting too complacent.
