The language one is actually more about WWI than WWII. It would have to say that France would be speaking Russian, not German, if it were about WWII.

thats interesting, could you justify that last bit right there for me?

Battle of Stalingrad was the turning point for the European Theater of WWII, and it took place between August 21, 1942 and February 2, 1943. USA landed in Normandy on June 6, 1944, almost a year and a half later. Of course USA was helping in other ways before then, but it is important to remember that we did not get involved militarily until after Germans were already being pushed back on the Eastern Front. From what I read our involvement in WWI was much more deterministic of the outcome.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Stalingrad

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D-Day

I thought the russians were on our side then?

I remember the germans making a grave mistake that costed them the war when they marched into russia during winter.

What? So Hitler was Russian?

Without US involvement USSR would probably keep going and "liberate" the whole Europe from the Nazis.

Hitler's invasion plan for USSR called for swift capture of territory, I think they were planning on the whole thing being over before winter time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Barbarossa

From an email fwd.

When in England at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by

the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example

of empire building' by George Bush.He answered by saying, "Over the

years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women

into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only

amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those

that did not return."

And army and air force bases in England and Germany.

And missle bases.

And naval bases.

But that's it.

Aside from all of Hawaii and Guam and for a time Cuba.

But never any more than that.

And the Philipines.

And, you know, New Mexico.

And California.

But nothing else.

Except Texas.

And a large part of Okinawa.

But never anything beyond that.

Except South Korea.

Oh, and Newfoundland.

But nothing else.

Except the British West Indies.

Frankly, Powell's full quote was more interesting than all three as they were in the OP.

Very true. It is an impressive bit of extemporaneous eloquence. I wonder if he still holds aspirations for national leadership. Or how badly did his now infamous appearance before Congress making the case for war in Iraq derail his political career?

The American Indians got what they deserved, for failing to stand up and continue to push the white man back into the Atlantic Ocean in the 1600's like they had in earlier centuries. The threw the Vikings and every other European interloper back into the sea until the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth. As soon as those Europeans were allowed to gain a foothold and the tribes refused to band together to fight their common enemy, the White Man, they were doomed. Just like the Irish and Scotish peoples had been against the English and just like we are currently being overrun by foreigners currently.

Mass_ (and others), I strongly recommend reading "Mayflower:

A Story of Courage, Community, and War" by Nathaniel Philbrick, an excellent, detailed, nuanced account of how the Pilgrims and American Indians negotiated, betrayed, and fought with each other that cuts through the simplistic Thanksgiving mythology. One of the better history narratives I've read.

This may help convince you.

The deadliest weapon in the world is a Marine and his rifle.

As I walk through the valley of death I fear no one, for I am the meanest *********** in the valley!

Mightnight Judges,

No sarcasm intended, but I'd like to know what it's like to live in a country that you so obviously despise. Please don't deny it. There would be no point. Every time anyone posts anything even remotely pro American or patriotic it seems like you are the first one to his keyboard to attack the USA. Not once in three years can I remember you posting just 1 item that would be construed as pro American.

So why do you choose to live here? The world is full of socialist and or communist goverments. As a conservative I have no opptions. This is the last bastion of capitalistic freedom.

Basically, I think Republicans like yourself have damaged this country and it's going to take a lot of work from intelligent/honest folks to restore it.

Way to avoid the question and pull out the old "you're a bad Republican" card.

I'm not a Republican (or Democrat) and I'm equally perplexed at how you and others on this board will attack anything that has any hint of patriotism in it. It really is quite amazing.

Without US involvement USSR would probably keep going and "liberate" the whole Europe from the Nazis.

I think it's quite a stretch to think that the Russians could have overwhelmed the Axis powers by themselves. They had repelled Hitler from the heart of Russia, but without the western front to deal with, Hitler could have retreated and consolidated his grip on Eastern Europe. Remember that he didn't even turn to Russia until after the Battle of Britain.

feel free to move to canada if you don't like what we do. I'm not even going to waste my effort in explaining that nearly every country listed above asked for our assistance in defending their soil, but we don't concern ourselves with those messy details do we?
