Why?

For what it's worth. Gain some pounds and I am optimistic.

Justin Hickman

Washington Redskins

DE

Rookie Free Agent

UCLA

Stength: Justin Hickman has good quickness. During his senior season, Justin Hickman showed a consistant ability to get into the backfield and finish off plays against top college offensive linemen, quarterbacks, and running backs. Justin Hickman accrued a lot of game experience at the college level.

Weakness: Justin Hickman is undersized for a defensive lineman. Justin Hickman put up less than ordinary numbers up until his senior season. Justin Hickman lacks the kind of speed you expect in an undersized, edge rusher.

Development: Justin Hickman would have been a first day pick with more impressive workout and speed numbers. But his lack of numbers didn't hurt him against college linemen in 2006. Many scouts projected him more as a linebacker, but they ignore his pass rush skills and he really hasn't shown any awareness of pass coverage and quarterback reads. If he has a solid training camp Justin Hickman is a lock to at least make the practice squad. Because he has very good pass-rushing skills, Justin Hickman has a good chance to make the roster, even as a rookie free agent. The question about Justin Hickman is whether his senior season was a fluke or a break-through season. The Redskins believe it was the latter, and would have drafted Justin Hickman if they had another second-day draft pick. Justin Hickman's size will limit his opportunities early on in his career, but if he shows himself as good against the run as he was in college, people will soon forget his size. If he looks overmatched against the run he should still be able to have a solid career as a pass-rushing end. In spite of his turning a corner in 2006, Justin Hickman still has a lot of technique to learn and will likely be brought along slowly unless he shreds NFL linemen the way he did college linemen.

Fantasy Football Rating: When he gets into the line rotation, impact sack man.

Typecast Outlook Opinion: Impact player. Overachiever. Very good chance of a long-productive NFL career, considering he is a rookie free agent.

The obsession with weight and height that some have doesn't make sense. What's important is for the guy to provide a pass rush while not being a liability against the run. If this guy has what it takes he'll make it.

Also - it'll be very hard to actually put on significant muscle weight during training camp and the season (if he makes it past training camp).

The time to do it is in the offseason.

Yeah he wont add much weight becuase he be out in the heat alot sweating. But he could learn better technique from greg blach during training and become a decent d-end or a good one which is all we need right know. The question is if he becomes good will greg williams or greg blache play him?

odd that the Redskins will promote a "training camp wonder of the year". We made Jesse Lumsden last year, but it looks like the Redskins want to make this Buzbee kid the hyped up camp fodder player. I guess they didn't like us hyping up HB Blades, Carl Berman, and Mike Espy.

No, I just think that from the comments the coaching staff has made about him, that he does have a lot of momentum from the OTAs.

Course, it is a long way from actually making the team. The coaches themselves have said that they haven't seen him in pads yet, so that could make a big difference, but when you are from a small program like Georgetown, you really need to go out there and make an impression if you even have a chance.

What I find interesting is all of the smaller, high-motor guys that they are bringing in to camp. (Wilson, Green, Hickman and Buzbee) It looks like they are working hard to find some situational passrushers.

We will keep 8 or 9 defensive lineman on our final roster

Daniels, Wynn, Carter, Griffin, Salave'a, Goldston and Montgomery are probably locks...thats a total of 7, with 3 DE's and 4 DT's

who gets the last spot or the last 2? You have to keep at least 4 ends

Evans?

My point being maybe one of those youngsters stick, just maybe...

Evans definitely stays. He is a better player than Wynn. Sure Wynn contains well, but he is one of the worst DEs in the league at rushing the passer. Evans does a nice job containing the run and getting the occasional sack at a fraction of the cost. Remember that Evans was one of our starting DEs in 05 when Daniels was out.

I find it hard to trust someone who writes a scouting report using the guys name twice a sentance. Is that really neccesary?

Yeah. It looked like a crummy job of "find and replace" that they use for all undersized DEs...

That said, it is very conceivable to see one of these rookies outplay Evans as that 3rd down end.

Wynn can also play DT and, as such, is a bit more versatile as a rotational player.
