All-Time Undrafted NFL Team

Congratulations to offensive tackle Willie Smith for making the Redskins 53 man roster. With hard work and some breaks, maybe he can find himself on the page 1 list of all time NFL undrafted players. Smith is an undrafted free agent out of East Carolina. He's 6'6", 320 pounds. He started his college career as a slim (230 pounds) defensive end. Yes, slim:

Switched to tight end at the start of his junior year, then moved to tackle, where he became a full time starter for the Pirates. Earned his bachelor's degree in business management.

Welcome to the Redskins, Willie. The list of NFL players who were undrafted is full of great players. Here's hoping you can one day earn your way onto that list.

any room for Tramon Williams at CB?

also, look for the name Vic So'oto this upcoming season. :)

Somewhere in the thread, as the roster grew, we decided that any new additions meant someone had to get dropped. So to add Tramon Williams at CB, you would have to make a case for dropping one of the others. Dick "Night Train" Lane. Everson Walls. Willie Brown. Nick Harper. Two (Lane and Brown) are Hall of Famers. Everson Walls and Nick Harper had pretty good NFL careers. Tramon is one to watch...two year starter, Pro Bowl in 2010. But I don't think he makes the list yet. Another good year or two and he could bump Nick Harper...

ah, didn't see that part. Unfortunately I'm a bit too young to be able to compare him to them folks. But I'd guess at this point in his career he's gotta keep on keepin' on to make sure his name is remembered.

He's definitely on his way. Part of the informal criteria has been length of career. If Williams keeps it up, he could bump Nick Harper. But played 9 years in the NFL for the Colts and Titans, was a starter for 7 of those years, and had 21 career INTs.

I don't think it's fair to include players from an era that race played such a big part. Big time colleges didn't recruit and hand out scholarships fairly, making black players turn to black colleges, who were often overlooked by NFL teams. If everything was as it is today, do the likes of Marion Motley and Everson Walls go undrafted?

That might be a valid point, but I don't know whether it's germane to this thread, the main point of which is simply to show that the NFL draft isn't the only avenue for players to make it into the league. Even given your example, the fact remains that undrafted free agents managed to make it in the NFL. The facts of why they weren't drafted are different, and may have be influenced by race, but they still made it to the NFL and had good to great careers.

BTW Everson Walls is from a later era, when blacks were routinely drafted. Teams just thought he was too slow.

I know it doesn't count but Johnny Unitas wasn't drafted until the 19th or 20th round (by Pittsburgh I think) which means nowadays he wouldn't have been close to getting drafted.

Unitas was a 9th round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers. But I get your point. I can't remember who, but there are Hall of Famers taken in the upper teens of past NFL drafts. The counter argument to that, though, is that there were way fewer NFL teams back then too... For example, when Johhny U. was drafted in 1955, there were only 12 NFL teams. But they had THIRTY rounds of the draft in 1955!

I do not know how I missed this thread year after year, but this is awesome! Great work by all involved.

Good luck Willie Smith!

Since the All-Time Undrafted NFL Team is still a little thin at guard, we might take a flyer on Brian Waters (undrafted out of North Texas in 1999).

From 2002 to 2010, he started 141 of the Chief's 144 games.

5 time Pro-Bowler.

2 time All-Pro.

Walter Payton man of the year in 2009.

I do not know who we might cut, but we only have 3 guards.

Also, Antonio Pierce may not be able to supplant anybody on this list, but I give him at least an honorable mention.

My bad. Thought for sure I read he was a 19th pick. The fact they had so many rounds back then is certainly why some old-timers aren't on the list.

Brian Waters is a DEFINITE addition. Good pick up s0crates. Waters is added. Pierce was on there at one time. I think I bumped him cuz he's kind of a dick since he left the Redskins. I'll put him back on.

Honorable mention should be Arian Foster

Not sure if he should boot anyone

He's gained the most rushing yards ever last season by an undrafted player

Foster is getting close. He's on the Honorable Mention list.

Thanks for adding my nominee Dan T.!

I really like the thread. It is evident the amount of work that went into it. The result are well worth it. This is not just a bunch of good players, this is too many exceptional players to fit on a roster. I find it a bit staggering. This team would be dominant.

It really does show that many excellent players are forgotten on draft day, and that even the long-shots can become great. What better inspiration could there be for a guy like Willie Smith?

Brandon Banks was an undrafted free agent.

He was released on 9/26/10, but then resigned to the practice squad three days later. He made his big impact against the Eagles in week 4 of the 2010 season by returning a punt for 51 yards, which eventually led to a redskins touchdown.

how about the guy who played for the eagles after answering the call and turning up to training the guy the movie was about

Vince Papale of Philly is a great story, but he doesn't make the all-time list. He played three seasons with the Eagles as a special teamer after making the team as a 30 year old rookie without college experience.

Banks has a good jump, but he's got to last more than a season or two to make the list.

He's got a shot at overtaking Herb Mul-key as the return specialist. Mul-Key's story is a little like Papale's. He played only 1 year of college football at tiny Alabama State but had to quit. He joined the Navy, then was working in Atlanta and playing a little semipro ball. He borrowed money to travel to DC for a Redskins tryout, organized by George Allen as little more than a publicity stunt. (His old high school teammate Harold "Tank" McLinton who was a middle linebacker on the Skins, had told him about it.) He impressed the coaches with a blazing 40 time on a muddy track, ended up being invited to training camp, and made the team. He lasted three years as the Redskins return man, and made the Pro Bowl in 1973. He saw limited action as a running back, gaining almost 100 yards combined against the Cowboys in a game in 1972.

Herb Mul-Key

So although Banks is pushing him, Herb Mul-Key stays as the all-time undrafted return man by virtue of his Pro Bowl appearance, in part because of his interesting path to the NFL, (and in part because he was a Redskin!). But I wonder if there's a return guy we're overlooking.

I think it's time to add the Texans' Arian Foster to this all time list. He was undrafted in the NFL despite a pretty decent career at the University of Tennessee, especially his junior year. He decided to stay for his senior season, a decision he came to regret. Under a new offensive scheme, his production plummeted. Projected as a 2nd round NFL pick after his junior year, he went undrafted after his senior season, even though he finished as the second leading rusher in Vols history behind only Travis Henry. He signed with Houston as an UDFA, and the rest is history.

The question becomes, what running back gets bumped? Mack Strong? Mike Sellers?

as a homer, i'd say keep sellers. but strong has been pretty good. plus, he has a great name. if he were a porn actor, he'd be named something like 'dick steel'.

That might make a good thread - "All NFL Porn Star Names".

If, Victor Cruz can play a few more years like this year... he should be added to this list.

Good point. He is definitely one to watch.

It's always impressive to find undrafted talent, but it's more impressive back in the days when there were more than 7 rounds when people like Jacoby didn't go in 12 rounds.

True. If you look at the list, some of the names go back to the days when the NFL draft was even longer than 12 rounds. Scouting was tougher back then... travel and technology wasn't what it is today.
